2013 North American Integrated Prebiotic Delivery Technology Innovation Award 2013

Technology Innovation Award Integrated Prebiotic Delivery North America, 2013 Frost & Sullivan s Global Research Platform Frost & Sullivan is in its 50th year in business with a global research organization of 1,800 analysts and consultants who monitor more than 300 industries and 250,000 companies. The company s research philosophy originates with the CEO s 360-Degree Perspective, which serves as the foundation of its TEAM Research methodology. This unique approach enables us to determine how best-in-class companies worldwide manage growth, innovation and leadership. Based on the findings of this Best Practices research, Frost & Sullivan is proud to present the 2013 North American Technology Innovation Award in the field of Integrated Prebiotic Delivery Technology to Sabinsa Corporation. Significance of the Technology Innovation Award Key Industry Challenges Addressed by Sabinsa Prebiotics are non-digestible natural food ingredients with the ability to influence growth and composition of the micro-flora (micro-organism/ probiotics) especially the bifidobacteria and spore forming bacteria such as Bacillus coagulans, present in the gastro-intestinal tract of human. It usually promotes health and wellness to the human body. Frost and Sullivan notes that research has shown probiotics work well when taken in combination of prebiotic ingredients. The combination of probiotics and prebiotics is known as synbiotics. A Synbiotic with different release profile of its basic ingredients works more efficiently. In addition for managing some specific health issues such as weight management, digestive disorders, immune health, along with different ingredients or actives, herbal or non herbal, use of probiotics and prebiotics is often desirable. Unfortunately these different types of active ingredients are often chemically in compatible with probiotics and other ingredients, in such cases, the formulation technology or the method of combining ingredients become a challenge. Frost & Sullivan feels that the above challenge has been properly addressed by Sabinsa. Sabinsa manufactures alternative and complementary natural products for the nutritional, pharmaceutical, and food industries. To address the formulation challenge of pre- and probiotics with different active ingredients, Sabinsa has developed an Integrated Nutritional Composites TM (INC) technology, which is a bi-layer technology to deliver two different nutritional ingredients or chemically incompatible ingredients together in a twotoned tablet. This technology is able to provide a combination of different release profiles, such as immediate release (IR) and sustained release (SR) in a single tablet. As such, Sabinsa s INC technology delivers stable active formulation of ingredients that may otherwise be incompatible or difficult to co-formulate. 2012 Frost & Sullivan 1 We Accelerate Growth

Key Benchmarking Criteria for Technology Innovation Award For the Technology Innovation Award, the following criteria were used to benchmark Sabinsa s performance against key competitors: Uniqueness of Technology Impact on New Products/Applications Impact on Functionality Impact on Customer Value Relevance of Innovation to Industry Decision Support Matrix and Measurement Criteria To support its evaluation of best practices across multiple business performance categories, Frost & Sullivan employs a customized Decision Support Matrix (DSM). The DSM is an analytical tool that compares companies performance relative to each other with an integration of quantitative and qualitative metrics. The DSM features criteria unique to each Award category and ranks importance by assigning weights to each criterion. The relative weighting reflects current market conditions and illustrates the associated importance of each criterion according to Frost & Sullivan. Fundamentally, each DSM is distinct for each market and Award category. The DSM allows our research and consulting teams to objectively analyze each company's performance on each criterion relative to its top competitors and assign performance ratings on that basis. The DSM follows a 10-point scale that allows for nuances in performance evaluation; ratings guidelines are shown in Chart 2. Chart 2: Performance-Based Ratings for Decision Support Matrix This exercise encompasses all criteria, leading to a weighted average ranking of each company. Researchers can then easily identify the company with the highest ranking. As a final step, the research team confirms the veracity of the model by ensuring that small changes to the ratings for a specific criterion do not lead to a significant change in the overall relative rankings of the companies. 2012 Frost & Sullivan 2 We Accelerate Growth

Chart 3: Frost & Sullivan s 10-Step Process for Identifying Award Recipients Best Practice Award Analysis for Sabinsa Corporation The Decision Support Matrix, shown in Chart 4, illustrates the relative importance of each criterion for the Technology Innovation Award and the ratings for each company under evaluation. To remain unbiased while also protecting the interests of the other organizations reviewed, we have chosen to refer to the other key players as Competitor 1 and Competitor 2. Chart 4: Decision Support Matrix for Technology Innovation Award Measurement of 1 10 (1 = lowest; 10 = highest) Award Criteria Uniqueness of Technology Impact on New Products/Applications Impact on Functionality Impact on Customer Value Relevance of Innovation to Industry Weighted Rating Relative Weight (%) 20% 20% 20% 20% 20% 100% Sabinsa Corporation 8.0 9.5 9.0 9.5 9.0 9 Competitor 1 7.0 7.5 8.0 8.0 9.0 7.9 Competitor 2 8.0 8.0 8.0 8.5 9.0 8.3 2012 Frost & Sullivan 3 We Accelerate Growth

Criterion 1: Uniqueness of Technology Conventionally, symbiotic products are pre-mixtures of probiotics and prebiotics typically delivered via capsules. Sabina Corporation s INC technology is the unique post mixture delivery approach of a prebiotic and a probiotic - or two different prebiotics. The patent pending technology provides the benefits of two different ingredients at the same time with their different release profiles. It intelligently separates out the two different nutritional ingredients, such as a blend of ginger and black pepper, while prohibiting the top and bottom layer ingredients from interacting with each other, as the interaction could lead to suppression of beneficial activity of the ingredients. Criterion 2: Impact on New Products/Applications Sabinsa s INC technology is a break-through approach in prebiotic or symbiotic bi-layer tablets. Sabina Corporation has launched the technology with five ready made formulations that include bi-layered tablets for improved heart health, blood sugar control, weight management, and joint health. As an example, Sabinsa s Health + INC Actives combines L- carnitine, beetroot extract, policosanol, and niacin. This bi-layer formulation promotes healthy blood sugar, blood lipid, and blood pressure levels. The technology has the potential of formulating bi-layer tablets, targeting specific preventive health issues with different time release profiles. The technology goes nicely with a variety of nutritional ingredients and therefore has the potential to formulate basic bi-layer nutrition tablets. Sabinsa has developed a symbiotic powdered formula, Lactowise, which can be provided in bi-layer tablet form. Criterion 3: Impact on Functionality Sabinsa s unique INC bi-layer technology is a unique addition in its family of smart prebiotic/symbiotic delivery. The bi-layer technology can bring together two chemically incompatible ingredients, which may not work well in blends. Also, it can combine ingredients with different release profiles - like immediate release (IR) and sustained release (SR) profile - in a single tablet. This technology is not just an equipment advantage; Frost & Sullivan points out that this solution provides the tablet formulation manufacturers with more flexibility in selecting active ingredients for tablet production. Criterion 4: Impact on Customer Value Sabinsa s experienced professionals work quite closely with clients. While partnering together, customers of Sabinsa can tune their existing formula with Sabinsa s INC bi-layer technology. With the mission of providing alternative and complementary natural products for human nutrition and well-being, Sabinsa has a collection of more than 100 standardized botanical extracts that include prebiotic and symbiotic products. To achieve customers trust, all ingredients of Sabinsa s products undergo extensive clinical studies. Sabinsa s 2012 Frost & Sullivan 4 We Accelerate Growth

products are all Kosher- and halal-certified. Criterion 5: Relevance of Innovation to Industry The bi-layer technology is an advanced formulation technology for the food, nutrition, and pharmaceutical ingredient industries. Since prebiotics and symbiotics are considered as nondigestible nutritional ingredients, and formulation of prebiotics and symbiotics is the major challenge existing in the health & nutrition industry, the INC bi-layer technology offered by Sabinsa is the smartest solution for delivering chemically incompatible ingredients in a single tablet. Conclusion Frost & Sullivan firmly believes that the Integrated Nutritional Composites (INC) technology developed by Sabinsa is an innovative, game changing technology in the prebiotic delivery and formulation market. The bi-layer tablets enable the integration of incompatible ingredients, help explore different time release profiles of the ingredients, and are also quite attractive due to their two-tone appearance. The technology can be used for formulating bi-layer tablets with chemically incompatible ingredients, providing more flexibility for formulation manufacturers to integrate ingredients in a single approach. Based on the aforementioned criteria as benchmarked through Frost & Sullivan independent analysis, Sabinsa is the recipient of the 2013 Technology Innovation Award.
