Integrated Management System ISO 9001:2008 ISO 9001:2008 ISO 14001:2004 OHSAS 18001:2007

Aims and Objectives Explain and understand the nature of an IMS Based on management system standards Describe the relationship between ISO 9001 ISO 14001 OHSAS 18001

Management Improvement Model Plan Do Check Act - Determine goal - Determine method of reaching goal - Education and training - Implementation - Check effects - Take appropriate action

Identifying Improvement Areas Performance Good Average Poor Low Medium High Importance Urgent Improve Appropriate Excess? Action

Management System Models Quality Environment Safety Inputs Processes Outputs Raw Materials Products Inputs Processes Outputs Power / Chemicals Bi products Hazards within the Processes Risk Injury

Management System Definitions That part of the overall management system which includes practices, processes, responsibilities, resources for establishing, developing, maintaining and improving the. Quality Policy ISO 9001 Environmental Policy ISO 14001 Health and Safety Policy OHSAS 18001 OHSAS 18001 is managed and certified as an ISO Standard

Legislation & Legal Requirements 9001, compliance with EC Directives, Standards etc. Machinery Directive, 14001, determine environmental impacts Multiple Legislation and UK + EC Regulations Aspects Register 18001, determine hazards and risk analysis Health and Safety at Work Act plus Regulations OH&S Impacts

Common Elements (1) Documented Procedures Policy System Manual Roles and Responsibilities Training, Awareness and Competence Continual Improvement Communication (Internal and External) Internal Audits

Documented Procedures How many documented procedures are required by each of the management standards? As many as are required to control ALL processes

Policy All three management system standards require a Policy Statement defined by top management The policy is a commitment by top management as to the way the business will be run to ensure that customer, interested party and stakeholder satisfaction is achieved QMS, EMS and OH&S elements can be combined into a single Business Policy

System Manual ISO 9001:2008 specifically requires a Quality Manual Neither 14001 or 18001 have a specific requirement for a Manual however.. 14001 and 18001 include requirements which are similar ALL can be met by including in an existing Quality Manual (Business System Manual)

Roles and Responsibilities ALL three standards require roles and responsibilities to be defined Management Representative Management are responsible for Quality Issues Environmental Aspects OH&S Risks

Training, Awareness and Competence ALL three standards require the same thing that all employees and contractors are competent to carry out their assigned tasks

Continual Improvement The requirements of ALL three standards are effectively the same i.e. setting objectives Except.. 14001 and 18001 require specific management programmes, which define responsibilities, means and time frames for the achievement of objectives A common procedure can be used for setting and reviewing of all company objectives

Internal Communication ALL require effective communication with employees with contractors

External Communication ALL require effective communication with customers with stakeholders QMS customer concerns / complaints includes the mechanisms required by 14001 and 18001 for dealing with communications from interested parties

Internal Audits Competence of Auditors is a key issue Audit programme to focus on Communication Discipline and Control Education (Training and Competence) Resources Procedure Audits

Common Elements (2) Control of Documents Control of Processes Monitoring of Product / Processes Records Non Conformance and Corrective Action Preventative Action Management Review

Control of Documents QMS procedure will satisfy requirements of the other standards

Control of Processes QMS procedures / work instructions may usefully include control parameters for 14001 and / or 18001 situations Specific procedures / work instructions may be required

Monitoring of Product / Processes QMS procedures / work instructions may usefully include monitoring parameters for 14001 and / or 18001 situations Specific procedures / work instructions may be required Calibration requirements are the same

Records QMS procedure will satisfy requirements of the other standards Type of record to be decided Retention times will have to be determined bearing in mind legal requirements for Environmental and OH&S records

Non conformance and Corrective Action QMS procedure will satisfy requirements of the other standards Effective corrective action is implemented to eliminate the root causes and hence prevent re-occurrence

Preventive Action Preventive action receives only a passing reference in 14001 and 18001 not because it is unimportant, but because arguably, the whole purpose of having an EMS and / or an OH&S management system is.. To prevent environmental impacts To prevent accidents and ill health among employees

Management Review To review activities of the business Product / Service Quality Environmental Impacts and Performance OH&S Performance Continual Improvement Customer Satisfaction

Standalone Elements Identification of Environmental Aspects Identification and Classification of OH&S Risks Contract Review Design Purchasing Emergency Preparedness and Response Evaluation of Legal Compliance

Identification of Environmental Aspects A procedure is required to describe this activity Integrate with any other procedure?...????????????? However

Identification and Classification of OH&S Risks A procedure is required to describe this activity Integrate with any other procedure?...????????????? However Similarities exist between Identification and Classification of OH&S Risks and the Identification (and Classification) of Environmental Aspects

Contract Review ISO 9001:2008 to identify customer requirements There is no equivalent in 14001 / 18001 But. New products / services may introduce Additional Environmental Aspects Additional OH&S Hazards Procedure needs to link to 14001 / 18001 requirements

Design ISO 9001:2008 to control the design process There is no equivalent in 14001 / 18001 But. New products / services may introduce Additional Environmental Aspects Additional OH&S Hazards Procedure needs to link to 14001 / 18001 requirements

Purchasing ISO 9001:2008 to select and periodically re-evaluate suitable suppliers ISO 9001:2008 to provide adequate purchase requirements to suppliers There is no equivalent in 14001 / 18001 But.

Purchasing Suppliers and Contractors must be made aware of an organisation s requirements If, contractors come on site, they should be treated, for the purposes of managing Environmental and OH&S issues, as if they are employees Methods of communicating requirements to contractors can be included in purchasing procedures

Emergency Preparedness and Response 14001 / 18001 require procedures to identify potential emergencies and incidents 14001 / 18001 require procedures to respond to potential emergencies and incidents Some emergencies might include E and OH&S elements Common procedure?...??????????????????

Evaluation of Legal Compliance 14001 / 18001 require procedures to periodically evaluate compliance to legal requirements There is no similar requirement in 9001
