Tuïs to 1 Artist- in-residence in the landscape The artist who spends his time in Kulturgut Poggenhagen will identify himself with this special place. The design for the base of this artist-in-residence is based on the idea of an optimized and differentiated interaction between artist and his surrounding. Kulturpark Poggenhagen is known for its many different spots, landscapes, meanings and interpretations: the open field; the enclosed forest; the forest edge; the bank; the lake; the symmetry-axe; the manor; the sheds etc.. The visitors of the park can also exert an influence on the experience of the park by the artist. This Artlab called Tuïsto (German god with many faces) is a minimalistic object that facilitates different experiences of the landscape park by the artist. However, Tuïsto does not prescribe any meanings or interpretations; it merely offers the artist a space in which he can give his own personal interpretation to his experience. Tuïsto is a minimalistic interaction machine, that enables and facilitates diverse relations between the artist in residence and the surrounding. It is up to the resident to choose his position in this variety of possibilities. Background The design of Tuïsto refers to Villa Rotonda by the Italian renaissance architect Andrea Palladio. During the renaissance the relation between men and nature got a whole different meaning. Before the renaissance, landscape used to be agricultural and strategic; people grew vegetation and haunted for animals. At the same time landscape was a territory that had to be defended. This resulted in specific building typologies for this landscape: the farm and the castle. Only in the renaissance a new type developed: the landscape villa that aims for a new relation with the landscape in which the enjoyment of the landscape was of main importance. Villa Rotonda by Palladio is an exquisite example of such a type. The particular feature of this villa
Tuïs to 2 is the neutral and universal plan that interacts with the differentiated surrounding landscape. The composition of the plan is layered; from the heart of the villa the relation with the landscape is determined by a series of connected spaces. The garden as a mediator is absent, instead a loggia takes care of connecting inside and outside. Because of this, landscape and architecture are in direct confrontation with each other. The architectural treatment of the landscape is reduced to an asymmetric arrangement of a symmetrical house in a rural scenery. One could argue that Villa Rotonda represents the most fundamental kind of landscape architecture. By use of minimal means a maximum relation between landscape and architecture is achieved. Design The concept of Villa Rotonda is translated to a small object that is about the interaction between artist and its surrounding, between culture and nature, individual and society. The object enables various relations between the artist and the landscape. The object is designed along two axes that represent different meanings: SITE 1 - FIELD SITE 2 - FOREST SITE 4 - COURT river village 5 2 3 forest 1 panorama landscape 4 stairs loggia room central hall VILLA ROTONDA - PALLADIO ALL SITES SITE 3 - LAKES SITE 5 - AXES
Tuïs to 3 inside-outside, culture-nature, public-private, open-closed, introvert-extrovert, observing-being observed, separating-connecting. The layered and symmetrical concept of the Villa Rotonda is translated in a square box with four different sides. By positioning box in relation to the context and by the artist taking position in relation to the box many different kinds of nature experiences are created. The object has four sides that each represent different relations. By his daily routine, the artist is choosing a position in this field of antipoles. Therefore the relation between artist and his surrounding is continuously changing. He can separate, connect, observe the landscape, observe himself or he can let himself be observed. COMMUNICATING DREAMING EXPOSING OBSERVING REFLECTING site The object can easily be lifted by a crane and positioned on various sites in the park. Different artists who reside in the base can choose themselves where they want to live for the time they are artist in residence. Besides the three given locations, other sites could be interesting as well for a temporary placement of the object. OBSERVING-OBSERVED FURNITURE INTERFACES INSIDE-OUT CONSTRUCTION

On one side is the loggia, on the other side is the interior living space. Opposite this sliding window is a mirror-wall with a small peeking window. Besides the mirror-wall is the a closed wall with integrated turn-up-bed and storage space. Opposite this wall is a full glass wall through which the artist can observe the landscape. 20 415 415 140 4330 4500 30 4065 20 4065 3200+ 2800+ P = 0 400-4500
