INTRODUCTION The University of Delhi was incorporated as a unitary teaching and residential University by an Act of Central Legislature in 1922. In 1933 an important step was taken towards the development of the University when the old Vice Regal Lodge with its extensive gardens was made available to the University. Sites were then offered to the constituent colleges on certain conditions. In 1943 the University was given a federal structure with the colleges as its constituent units. In 1953, a distinction was introduced between constituent and affiliated colleges, the former being those which were allowed to organize both Pass and Honours Courses at the under-graduate level and the latter being those which were permitted to organize instructions only for the Pass Courses. The present arrangement is that almost all the under -graduate teaching is done in the colleges, while the University organizes postgraduate teaching and research with its own staff. The staff appointed in the colleges, are also associated under co-operative teaching scheme. The President of India is the Visitor, the Vice-President of India is the Chancellor and the Chief Justice of India is the Pro-Chancellor of this University. Prof. Dinesh Singh, an eminent Mathematician, is the Vice-Chancellor of the University since October 29th, 2010. The University enclave covers an area around 700 acres. There has been a considerable increase in student enrolment in recent years. The number of students on roll (including those taking, correspondence courses) at present is approximately 4,50,000 as compared to 27,905, in August 1964, in 103 Colleges and Institutions, 86 Post-graduate Departments and 16 Faculties. In an effort to cope with this enormous expansion, while continuing to maintain its high academic standards, the University initiated in the early seventies a new organizational pattern based on concept of a multi-campus institution. Faculty of Music & Fine Arts 1. Master of Fine Arts (MFA) 2. Master of Arts (Music) Hindustani and Karnatak Music -Instrumental &Vocal 3. Diploma [Sangeet Shiromani] Hindustani & Karnatak Music -Instrumental &Vocal 4. Master of Philosophy (MPhil) [Music] 5. PhD (Music) 6. Diploma Fine Arts 7. PG Diploma Fine Arts 8. ELIGIBILITY FOR ADMISSION (A) UNDER-GRADUATE COURSES Evidence of required academic performance must be in the form of certified English transcripts listing all the courses with the grades or marks earned. Transcripts in languages other than English are not acceptable. Applicants for any of the Under-Graduate Course must have completed 12 years of formal schooling. The minimum admission requirement in terms of the percentage of marks that are required by a candidate for being admitted to a course varies in many cases from year to year. The number of seats in the Science Courses is extremely limited. In view of the large number of applicants, admission will be through merit only. (B) POST-GRADUATE COURSES For admission to a post-graduate programme of studies in any discipline, one must have completed 12 years of formal education at the School level followed by a Bachelor s Degree

of at least 3 years duration. However, the admission to post-graduate courses is rather restricted and the applicant should have an excellent academic record to stand a fair chance for admission. (C) MPhil AND PhD COURSES University of Delhi also offers MPhil and PhD Courses in its Departments/Faculties. The minimum admission requirement for the research degree (PhD) is a Master degree of Indian University or any other degree recognized as equivalent to it. The admission for these courses is very limited and is decided by the respective Departments/Faculties on the basis of a very sound academic record along with a detailed research proposal (Only in English). AGE REQUIREMENT There is no minimum age bar for admission to under-graduate courses and post graduates in the University and its colleges except in professional courses where regulatory body prescribes minimum age requirements (such as MCI, AICTE etc.). EXPENSES Tuition fees and other fees vary, but are usually between Rs.6, 000-12,000 per annum. Room and board expenses in University and College residence range from Rs.3000/-to 6,000/-per month. Total expenses covering tuition fees, boarding & lodging and incidental expenses approximately come to Rs.7000/-per month for students residing in Hostel and Rs.10, 000/- per month in respect of students who are residing in private rented accommodation. 11Every foreign student has to pay one time Foreign Students Registration Fee of Rs. 18000/- for undergraduate including Certificate/Diploma courses, Rs. 24,000/- for Postgraduate courses and Rs. 30,000/- for courses leading to research work.
