about listening carefully to what people are saying Designing services for the future

Continue to build on the users expectation to find a free public space that offers tranquility and free services

When I go to the library I don t go there only for the books, but for the atmosphere, the smell and the surroundings - Ibrahim

Create rooms with strong and manifold identities

One should really have different zones for different people some people can t stand each other or are afraid of each other. They could all be at different floors and then meet in the cafeteria -William

Remember to create dynamic rooms where you can be together with other people and stay alone.

The beautiful thing about a library is that you can be alone but still together. - Gunnar

Use the special competence of librarians to develop training programs or activities for the users.

Only good service can create loyal users.

When I come into the library I usually get this feeling I like to have when I enter a shop. A smiling woman asks me if she can help med finding what I am looking for. - Jan Fredrik

Strengthen the experience of the physical book and the text.

I need the visual part of a book to get attracted to It. It should catch my attention. - Anders

The statistics related to the book collections could be used to create new services for the users.

Show the non-users that the library offers a greater depth than the web.

The new location of the library is no guarantee for a more visible library.

Users expect the library to surprise them.

The library should be like a big city a site where you constantly discover something new. - Silje

Make a library for children and their parents.

Create an attractive place for marginal groups and specialized interest and let people or groups contribute with their insight.

Like when we meet at the Red Cross. There we can talk about anything we like and I can take off the hijab and be together with other women. - Nadia

There is a big potential in developing services in the library related to self service on the web.

Both the newest of the new and a rich archive.

I think the library should be the first to get access to the newest information. - Adil

Young users would like to get relevant recommendations from people with credibility.

I have no idea what I am looking for, but how can the librarians know what is of interest to me? They are much older than I am. -Philip, 17

The library should be easily plugged into services on the web - and the web should get more functions in the physical library.

One of the things I like about the library is that you don t need to be on the web. -Merete, 17

developing strategies bringing the insights into a systematic recipe for change

Vision Inspiring users to take delight in reading, experience and obtain life long learning The library shall be the hub in Oslo s cluster of educational institutions and create new networks and broad connections to stimulate extensive popular enlightenment - by exchange of new knowledge, culture and information through the library s physical and digital transmission channels. The users shall be inspired and experience new connections and obtain new knowledge when being confronted with the library s content. The library shall promote and motivate life long learning, stimulate reading and language skills in all user segments.

Vision Free debate and exchange of opinions in the library The library of the future shall position itself as an editor activating and presenting topics from collections and sources. This active role of the library shall aim at creating debates, exchange of opinions and embody central discussions in the community. The library of the future stimulates and welcomes the active library user - the user producing content and sharing opinions with other library users. future rooms the building as a strategic tool

Tid

The challenge is to balance: a) The building project s need to freeze details and establish a valid budget b)the library s need to develop a new concept without freezing to many details - and hereby getting a building that allows changing content in it s total lifespan.

The new library space is primarily shaped by: openness, lack of walls and spatial divisions easy accessible channels for technical infrastructure and introduction of new technology use of furniture and the media collection as functional spatial divisions and as scenograpy variation between social and active zones near the street and higher zones with calm, silence and contemplation.

The architects Marius Mowe and Einar Hagem

The building must be organized in a way that allow changes in the future according to changing needs, functions and development in technology. Thu building must allow a systematic access to books and sources combined with serendipity and new presentation techniques.

The building should have open, transparent and inviting areas that allow people to look into a dynamic space of culture, knowledge and learning.

The user s diversified needs shall prevail, not the organisation and distribution of the physical media collection.

The building should have a rational way of organizing logistics and the flow of visitors.

The building should have efficient technology allowing a sustainable economy and a healthy working environment.
