THE Evolution of the Metering Industry... In 1885, Galileo Ferraris initiated the development of the Mechanical kwh meter after the use of AC transformer for the distribution of electricity to measure the consumption. A Century later, Electricity became the main source for energy, and the demand increased remarkably. So the need for high accuracy meters grew, which resulted in the development of Electronic meters.
Due to the increasing oil prices, the cost of electricity increased, the need for a more accurate meter reading systems arose, resulting in the development of Remote Meter Reading Systems. In the 90 s when Electricity bills increased, in some countries consumers failed to pay their Electricity Bills which put utilities in tight financial positions. The development of One Way Key Pad Electricity Meters was the solution.
In the mid 90 s as Electricity Demand went sky rocketing, utilities introduced Multi-Tariffs to encourage consumers to reduce their consumption to reduce the Peak Load. So the need for Multi-Tariff Meters with Max. Demand was inevitable. In the 2000 s as electricity consumers became aware of methods of tampering electricity meters, the need for Electronic Meters with Anti-Tampering features became a must to reduce Energy Losses. Now Utilities are looking for Metering Solutions that improve their efficiency and increase their Profit too. So the deployment of 2 way communication systems became the best Solution to reduce Technical Losses as well as Commercial Losses too.
METERING SOLUTIONS 1) Measure Consumption: Active energy- kwh Reactive energy- kvarh Maximum demand- kw 2) High Accuracy: Meters with Accuracy Class 1, 0.5 or 0.2 3) Tamper Proof: Meter Detects, Disconnects or Measures accurately under: High Magnetic Influence. Illegal connection to external neutral. High Electro-Static Voltage. Meter bypassing. Reverse connection. Illegal opening of meter / terminal cover.
4) Multi-Tariff: System that follows tariffs: Time of Use tariff (T.O.U.) Step Tariff. Max. Demand calculation. 5) Meter Data Collection: Online/Offline 2 way communication system Send/receive data from the meter. Meter consumption. Load profile. Maximum demand. Tampering events. Tariff Programming. Set Load limit. Power quality information.
6) Revenue collection: Meter Calculates the Credit in Money according to: Time of Use tariff (T.O.U.) Step tariff. Flat tariff. 7) Power Quality Monitoring: Meter Records Time / Date of events: Power Failure. Over/Under voltage. 8) Network Losses Measurement: System Measures the network losses: per Building, Transformer, District / City.
9) Upgradeable Meter Hardware: Upgrade the meter to 2 way communication: PLC, RF, GPRS etc. Upgrade from manual reading to Automatic Meter Management-AMM. Adding new features by reprogramming the Micro-Controller. 10) Peak Demand Monitoring: Meter Detect Consumer s exceeding Peak Demand: Record Date/Time of event. 11) Load Control: To Avoid Load Shedding: Meter Disconnects consumers exceeding their contracted load.
12) Auto Billing Process: Reading the consumption remotely through a 2 way communication system to issue Bills. 13) Customer Self-service: Consumers pay their bills without visiting the Bill collection centre. 14) On-Line control: Reports Tampering events online. Disconnect non-paying customers. Monitor Network operation. Network Data Acquisition (SCADA)

Software
Data The Database classifies the data as follows: Country Cities Sectors Districts» Transformers --> DCUs --> Meters» Vending Stations Reports could be viewed according to any level, for example you can know the power sales all over the country or in a certain city or district.
Data Security All important Data inside the Database can not be deleted. Three different security algorithms are implemented to protect the important data like financials. The system can recover illegally modified data from the Database, even data modified by Database administrator.
User Preference User can select his preferable color. User Friendly interface. Each User has favorite tabs, to add his frequently used forms. Each User can select his default language.
Database Profiles Administrator can define one or more database connection (profiles). In case of multiple replicated database servers, if one server connection fail, the software can connect to a different replicated server. Profiles are stored in encrypted format, to prevent Database Username and Password from being known.
User Management Security system is similar to Unix. Users belong to Groups, each group has a level of authority. Each user has the authority to modify his own data or lower level users data.
Security Settings Passwords expire within defined period of time (in days). User name and password size are configured length. Passwords are stored in encrypted format
Audit Log All transactions are stored in a secure format with Log viewer options. No data can be deleted from the Audit Log, it s like the Black box in a Plane. Data in the Audit log can be traced to the Operator, PC, Date &Time of entry. All transactions for a Meter No. can be traced.
