1. INTRODUCTION This manual is designed to be a step-by-step guide for a user new to Mekko Graphics 3. It will cover download and installation, as well as an overview of the basic functions of the Mekko Graphics 3 application. Mekko Graphics 3 uses a Microsoft PowerPoint platform. Understanding fundamental concepts about MS PowerPoint will be necessary to leverage the Mekko system. This manual is designed to give the user essential information to create Mekko slides, as well as provide an overview of the different types of Mekko graphs and how they are used. 2. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS The Mekko Graphics 3 system has the following system requirements. 64 Meg of RAM Operating System: Windows 95/98, NT, 2000, XP MS Office version: Office 2000, Office XP, Office 97 (limited functionality) 3. INSTALLATION Once the Mekko Graphics system has been downloaded, installation is a simple process. The following steps will walk the user through the Mekko Graphics 3 installation. 1. Double click the file mekkographics3download.exe. 2. You will be presented with the following screen: 3. The system will detect if you have an older version of the Mekko Graphics software and will prompt you to first uninstall the older version prior to installing Mekko Graphics 3. You may either the installation and uninstall your older version or with the installation to install Mekko Graphics 3. If you do not have an older version of the software, you will not see this message. Page 3 of 20
4. You will now be prompted to install Mekko Graphics 3. Click to proceed. 5. You will be presented with a license agreement. Click the licensing terms. to accept agreement to Page 4 of 20
6. The installation wizard will prompt you for a destination directory. To accept the default directory, click. To choose a different directory, click the button and navigate to the desired directory. Click. 7. Mekko Graphics 3 installation will begin. 8. Once complete, click. 4. USING THE SYSTEM 4.1 Starting Microsoft PowerPoint Go the Start menu and choose Programs Microsoft PowerPoint Microsoft PowerPoint will present you with the following screen. Click OK. Page 6 of 20
3. You will be prompted to choose a slide layout. Choose the desired layout and click OK. 4.2 Inserting a Mekko Chart If you are running MS Office 2000 or higher, you will notice the Mekko menu item as well as Mekko buttons on the left hand side of the screen. Go to the Mekko menu and select Insert Mekko Chart. Page 7 of 20
If you are running MS Office 97, you will not see a Mekko menu in PowerPoint. To insert a chart, go to the Insert Menu and choose Insert Object. Then choose Graphics Wizard Chart and click. Page 8 of 20
4.3 Creating a Mekko Chart 1. Double click the Double click here to create a chart (Note, if you have not yet registered the software, you will be prompted with a registration screen. Please follow the instructions on our website to register the software, or click Register Later to continue using the trial version for 10 days.) Select a Chart Family 2. Mekko Wizard will ask you to select a chart family. For an overview of the different types of charts, please refer to section 6.0 - Chart Type Overview. Choose your chart family and click to continue. Page 9 of 20
Marimekko, Bar, Line, and Area is the default chart family and includes the Marimekko, Bar-Mekko, Cascade, Cluster and Stacked Bar, Horizontal Cluster Bar, 100% Stacked Bar, Area and 100% Area, Stacked Bar Line, Cluster Bar Line, 2Y Cluster Bar, Horizontal Stacked Bar, Line, Pie Chart, and 2Y Line and Bar combination chart types. The Bubble and Scatter Charts chart family includes Bubble and XY Scatter chart options. The Gantt chart will present you with a Wizard to create a custom Gantt chart. Select a Chart Type 3. Select a Chart Type and click to continue Page 10 of 20
Enter Data 4. Enter data directly here or link to a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet. Page 11 of 20
The Format and Data tabs toggle between preview and spreadsheet views. To navigate in the Data tab, press <Tab> to move across cells, <Enter> to move down cells. Notice how data entered in the Data tab is reflected graphically in the Format tab. The Mekko Graphics system offers many options in presenting your data. For a more detailed explanation of the options available, please refer to the online help. Page 12 of 20
Once you are satisfied with the data entered, click to continue. 5. Enter chart axis information. This screen contains Y-axis, X-axis, and Frame tabs for entering information in the Marimekko, Bar, Line, and Area chart family. Once chart axis information is entered and formatted, press to continue. Page 13 of 20
6. Enter Bar and Grand totals. Certain chart types do not have a Step 5 window, as their function is not to display totals (e.g., Line, Bubble, XY Scatter). Only Marimekko and BarMekko chart types display a Grand total value. Page 14 of 20
Once information is formatted for Bar and Grand totals, press the Format tab to preview the chart and make any additional changes. 7. Press PowerPoint and click after making all changes to exit Wizard charting and draw the chart in native 8. Click outside the chart frame to deselect the chart and select File, Save. Page 15 of 20
4.4 Creating a Mekko Table NOTE This function is not available to those users running MS Office 97. 1. Go to the Mekko menu and select Insert Mekko Table 2. Choose the Text Chart family and click. Page 16 of 20
3. Enter the number of rows and columns you wish to have in your table. You may also indicate if you wish to include a column or row header, and the font size. Once satisfied with the data you have entered, click. 4. The Mekko system will create table according to your custom specifications. You may use the Mekko tools to resize rows and columns, as well as insert and delete rows and columns. Page 17 of 20
5. You may also add stoplight symbols to your table by expanding the Mekko symbols in your toolbar. Page 18 of 20
5. OVERVIEW OF CHART TYPE The science of charting is a way of communicating information visually to people in an effective manner. Each chart type presents information differently. When considering the type of chart to choose, you need to understand the advantages of each type of chart and think about the data you plan to present. Understanding the advantages of each chart type will help you leverage your data and present it in clearly and efficiently. The following section provides an overview of the different chart types supported by Mekko Graphics 3. A slide deck is also available for download, which displays detailed examples of each chart type Mekko Graphics 3 has to offer. 5.10 Pie Chart A pie chart shows the size of items that make up a data series proportional to the sum of the items. Pie charts always show only one data series and consist of a circle divided into wedged segments. It shows the relative sizes of components to one another and to the whole pie. 5.11 Bar-Mekko Bar-Mekko charts also analyze data against the X and Y axis. The difference is that BarMekkos look only at one segment of data. There are both single variable and double variable Bar-Mekkos. There are two types of Bar-Mekko charts, single and double variable, which is defined by the number of data series plotted. To create double-variable Bar-Mekko you must add a bar width row to the data spreadsheet. 5.12 Marimekko Chart Marimekko charts are two-dimensional graphs that analyze multiple data series against two variables, the X and Y axes. The graphs are so named for their tapestry-like appearance. The Marimekko graph can be used in many different industries. Its function is to display a system of interrelated values so that both groups and relative sizes of the elements can be seen at the same time. In a Marimekko chart, the widths of the columns are proportional to data represented by the columns. Individual segment height is a percentage of the respective bar total value. 5.13 Simple and Cluster Bar Charts Simple and cluster bar charts are bar charts designed to display changes in data over time. A simple bar chart compares items for one data series. A cluster bar chart compares two or more data series plotted side-by-side. The bars are always in the same position for each grouping throughout the graph, so comparisons may be made. 5.14 Stacked Bar Chart Stacked bar charts have multiple data series stacked on top of one another, so that the top data level represents the total for that column. They are generally used to show how a larger component is divided into smaller components and the effect of each component has on the Page 19 of 20
whole. A 100% stacked bar graph, instead of plotting actual values, shows the percents of values relative to the total. 5.15 Line Charts A line chart shows trends in data over time of equal intervals. They can display one or multiple data series. 5.16 Stacked and Cluster Bar Line charts Stacked and Cluster Bar Line charts combine the dynamics of Bar and Line charts into one chart type. The line displays the data series values plotted vertically at constant intervals. The bars display data series values plotted horizontally at equal intervals. 5.17 Area Charts An area chart displays how relative mixtures of a given category change over time. By displaying the sum of the plotted values, it shows the relationship of parts to a whole. Area graphs usually do not display specific values, but rather show trends and relationships. 5.18 Bubble Charts A bubble chart plots three variables simultaneously. The X and Y coordinates demonstrate how one item varies in relation to another. The third variable is bubble size and is proportional to the value it represents. Bubble charts have an advantage of line graphs because they display an additional variable in the same chart. 5.19 XY Scatter Charts Scatter charts display quantitative information using dots. They plot data simultaneously against X and Y axis. They may display one or more data series. It shows uneven dispersal of data, or clusters, and is many times used for scientific data. 5.20 Gantt Chart A Gantt chart is a type of scheduling chart that tracks schedules, events, and steps necessary to complete a project. It shows the steps involved in a project and their relationship over time. The length of the horizontal bar indicates the duration of each step. They allow a group to document the progress made on the implementation of a project. Page 20 of 20
