Welcome to Mekko Graphics 5 What's New? Here are just some of the new features available in our latest version of Mekko Graphics. 1. Quick Launch Charts You can use the Quick Launch method to automatically create any desired Mekko Graphics chart. To use the Quick Launch method, go to the Mekko Graphics tab and choose your desired chart type from the list of drop down menu options. Mekko Graphics will automatically launch and create your chart with pre-populated data, that you can then replace with your own data. The quick launch method requires fewer clicks than the standard method, and is a faster and easier way to insert your desired charts. The "dummy data" that populates the chart allows you to quickly see how the chart utilizes the data. 2. Growth Lines Growth Lines can be used in charts to visualize the difference typically between first to last bar, although it can be between any two bars (or between any two segments for cluster bar charts). The line is drawn from the start bar to the end bar with an arrow pointing in the direction of the growth. 1

Mekko Graphics User Documentation 3. Automatic (Computed) Average Lines Computed Average Lines automatically calculate and display the data average for a given chart, drawing a line across the entire chart at the calculated average value point on the Y axis. Note: For 2Y chart types, you have the option of displaying the average line on the Y or 2Y axis. Computed Average lines will automatically recalculate and adjust your average line if your data changes. 4. Color Shades for charts Mekko Graphics now provides new color palettes (color shades) for your charts. Color shades use gradations of a standard color for a new updated look in your charts. 5. Multi chart slide options Mekko Graphics now offers several new slide layout options, including multi-chart layouts 2

Welcome to Mekko Graphics 5 and half page chart layouts. 3

Overview of Charts Bar/Area/Line Charts at a Glance The science of charting is a way of communicating information visually to people in an effective manner. Each chart type presents information differently. When considering the type of chart to choose, you need to understand the advantages of each type of chart and think about the data you plan to present. Understanding the advantages of each chart type will help you leverage your data and present it clearly and effectively. Below is an overview of the different bar/area/line chart types supported by Mekko Graphics. A comprehensive slide deck is also available for download, which displays working examples of every chart type supported. To see a sample presentation with an example of each chart type, click here. a. Marimekko Marimekko charts are two dimensional graphs that analyze multiple data series against two variables, the X and Y axes. You can think of it as a variable width 100% stacked bar chart. The graphs are so named for their tapestry-like appearance. The Marimekko graph can be used in many different industries. Its function is to display a system of interrelated values so that both groups and relative sizes of the elements can be seen at the same time. In a Marimekko chart, the width of the columns are proportional to data represented by the columns. Individual segment height is a percentage of the respective bar total value. b. Bar-Mekko Bar-Mekko charts also analyze data against the X and Y axis. The difference is that Bar-Mekkos look only at one segment of data. There are both single variable and double variable Bar-Mekkos. There are two types of Bar-Mekko charts, single and double variable, which is defined by the number of data series plotted. To create double-variable Bar-Mekko you must add a bar width row to the data spreadsheet. c. Cascade Cascade charts categorize revenue or cost components of a market segment, as defined by the data series being measured. Each bar is related to and effected by the values in the surrounding bars. That is, given the first bar value, the next bar adds (or subtracts) to it a second value. The third bar then adds (or subtracts) to that value, and so on. The last bar shows the final value after all additions (or subtractions) have been made. d. Horizontal Cascade Categorize revenue or cost components of a market segment, as defined by the data series being measured. Each bar in the chart is related to and affected by surrounding bar values. Use horizontal bar and series labels to improve legibility. e. Cluster Bar Simple and cluster bar charts are bar charts designed to display changes in data over time. A simple bar chart compares items for one data series. A cluster bar chart compares two or more data series 35

Mekko Graphics User Documentation plotted side-by-side. The bars are always in the same position for each grouping throughout the graph, so comparisons may be made. f. Stacked Bar A Stacked Bar chart shows the relationship of individual segments to the whole. Each bar represents the total value of a data series and each item in the series is represented by a segment of the bar. The value of each bar and bar segment is measured vertically on the Y axis. g. Horizontal Cluster Bar Cluster bar charts are bar charts designed to display changes in data over time. A horizontal cluster bar chart compares two or more data series plotted horizontally. The bars are always in the same position for each grouping throughout the graph, so comparisons may be made. h. 100% Stacked Bar A 100% Stacked Bar chart shows the relationship of individual segments to the whole. Each bar represents 100% the total value of a data series and each item in the series is represented by a percentage segment of the bar. The value of each bar and bar segment is measured vertically on the Y axis. While the total percentage measured for any one bar is always representative of 100%, the actual total value represented by each bar may vary. i. Area An area chart displays how relative mixtures of a given category change over time. By displaying the sum of the plotted values, it shows the relationship of parts to a whole. Area graphs usually do not display specific values, but rather show trends and relationships. j. 100% Area An area chart displays how relative mixtures of a given category change over time. By displaying the sum of the plotted values, it shows the relationship of parts to a whole. Area graphs usually do not display specific values, but rather show trends and relationships. The total percentage measured for any one time unit is always representative of 100%. k. Stacked Bar Line Stacked and Cluster Bar Line charts combine the dynamics of Bar and Line charts into one chart type. The line displays the data series values plotted vertically at constant intervals. The bars display data series values plotted horizontally at equal intervals. l. Cluster Bar Line Stacked and Cluster Bar Line charts combine the dynamics of Bar and Line charts into one chart type. The line displays the data series values plotted vertically at constant intervals. The bars display data series values plotted horizontally at equal intervals. m. Horizontal Stacked Bar Display the relationship of individual segments (data series) to the whole (bar total). Use horizontal bar and series labels to improve legibility. n. Line Plots series of data points relative to the Y axis at equal time intervals on the X axis for the purposes of trend analysis. 36

Overview of Charts o. 2Y Line A Line chart plots series of data points relative to the Y axis at equal time intervals on the X axis for the purposes of trend analysis. In a 2Y Line chart, the user can choose a series to plot as a 2nd Y axis. p. 2Y Cluster Bar Simple and cluster bar charts are bar charts designed to display changes in data over time. A cluster bar chart compares two or more data series plotted side-by-side. The bars are always in the same position for each grouping throughout the graph, so comparisons may be made. In a 2Y Cluster Bar chart, the user plots a series as a 2nd Y axis. q. 2Y Stacked Bar Line Stacked and Cluster Bar Line charts combine the dynamics of Bar and Line charts into one chart type. The line displays the data series values plotted vertically at constant intervals. The bars display data series values plotted horizontally at equal intervals. A 2Y stacked bar line chart allows the user to plot a series in the data as a 2nd Y axis. r. 2Y Cluster Bar Line Cluster Bar Line charts combine the dynamics of Bar and Line charts into one chart type. The line displays the data series values plotted vertically at constant intervals. The bars display data series values plotted horizontally at equal intervals. In a 2Y Cluster Bar Line chart, the user plots another series as a 2nd Y axis. s. Pie Chart A pie chart shows the size of items that make up a data series proportional to the sum of the items. Pie charts always show only one data series and consist of a circle divided into wedged segments. It shows the relative sizes of components to one another and to the whole pie. 37

Mekko Graphics User Documentation Mekko Graphics Bubble/Scatter Charts at a Glance The science of charting is a way of communicating information visually to people in an effective manner. Each chart type presents information differently. When considering the type of chart to choose, you need to understand the advantages of each type of chart and think about the data you plan to present. Understanding the advantages of each chart type will help you leverage your data and present it clearly and effectively. Below is an overview of the different bubble/scatter chart types supported by Mekko Graphics. A comprehensive slide deck is also available for download, which displays working examples of every chart type supported. X-Y Linear (Bubble) Bubble charts plot three variables simultaneously. X and Y variables indicate how one item (X) varies in relation to another (Y), and bubble size indicates relative scale. X Log (Bubble) X Log (Bubble) charts plot three variables simultaneously on an X log scale. X and Y variables indicate how one item (X) varies in relation to another (Y), and bubble size indicates relative scale. Log scales cannot plot negative or zero data and are typically used to display regression analysis. Y Log (Bubble) Y Log Bubble charts plot three variables simultaneously on a Y log scale. X and Y variables indicate how one item (X) varies in relation to another (Y), and bubble size indicates relative scale. Log scales cannot plot negative or zero data and are typically used to display regression analysis. X-Y Log (Bubble) X-Y Log Bubble charts plot three variables simultaneously on a log scale. X and Y variables indicate how one item varies in relation to another, and bubble size indicates relative scale. Log scales cannot plot negative or zero data and are typically used to display regression analysis. Growth-Growth Growth/Growth bubble charts illustrate the relationship between market growth rates and product (or company) growth rates. The bubble size reflects the amount of revenue generated by each product (or company). The regression line plots the trend with respect to both rates. Growth-Share Growth/Share charts compare companies within an industry or the relative position of different products (or divisions) within one company. The charts display the relationship between relative market share (inverse logarithmic X axis) and market growth (linear Y axis). ROS/ROA vs. RMS ROS/ROA vs. RMS bubble charts depict the relationship between companies Return on Sales or Return on Assets (linear Y axis) and their Relative Market Share (logarithmic X axis). The bubble size reflects either sales or net income for each company. The normative band illustrates the expected profitability range given a company s RMS. 38

Overview of Charts X-Y Linear (Scatter) An X-Y Linear chart shows the relationships among the numeric values in several data series. It displays clusters of quantitative data at uneven intervals on a linear scale. You can plot either two groups of numbers as one series of XY coordinates or display the relationship (regression) among numeric values in several data series. X Log (Scatter) An X Log chart shows an experience curve, which is a regression that displays the relationship between accumulated experience (logarithmic X axis) and constant dollar price (or cost) per unit (logarithmic Y axis). The data points usually represent the price (or cost) and experience for a given year. The X axis is a log scale which cannot plot negative or zero data. Y Log (Scatter) A Y Log chart is a regression that displays a data series as a the relationship between a variable Y axis and a constant value on the X axis. The Y axis is a log scale which cannot plot negative or zero data. X-Y Log (E-Curve) An X-Y Log chart plots two groups of numbers as one series of XY coordinates. Plot either two groups of numbers as one series of XY coordinates or display the relationship (regression) among numeric values in several data series. Create an Experience Curve depicting a decrease in constant dollar cost with accumulated experience over time. Log scales cannot plot negative or zero data. 39

Mekko Graphics Gantt Charts at a Glance Absolute Gantt An Absolute Gantt chart displays a project's task and timeline information using calendar dates. The software then calculates the task duration based on the calendar difference between the two dates and the length of the work week. Relative Gantt A Relative Gantt chart is created when the user enters integers representing a relative start and end day. The difference between these two integers represents the duration. For example, a task with a start date of 1 and an end date of 7 represents a task that is 7 days long. In Mekko Graphics, a relative month is defined as 20 work days or 4 weeks. A relative year is 12 relative months or 48 relative weeks. 41

Chart Creation Entering Data The Mekko Graphics user-interface now has SpreadsheetGear embedded as the Data view. Many Excel formulas and keyboard shortcuts are accessible through SpreadsheetGear. You may use either the Data View or the Combo View to enter data in Mekko Graphics. Bar labels are generally listed across the top of the spreadsheet, and series labels are listed down the spreadsheet. The first row is designated for Bar names and first column for Series names. The first cell (A1) should be empty. The chart dynamically draws as you enter data into these rows and columns. To enter data into the spreadsheet, you may do any one of the following: 1. Enter data directly as you would in Excel 2. Copy and paste from an existing Excel spreadsheet 3. Link to Excel. Edit in Excel Feature An exciting new feature of Mekko Graphics is our Edit in Excel feature. For those users who wish to take advantage of international formulas or who wish to find a formula for a specific function or use some of the Excel features (like being able to select cells and quickly drag and copy in any direction), the Edit in Excel button on the SpreadsheetGear toolbar will launch an instance of Excel. Once you press the Edit in Excel button, your Mekko Graphics data will be automatically copied to an Excel spreadsheet and able to be edited. Any edits you make in Excel are then copied back to your data sheet in Mekko Graphics either by clicking back on the data sheet or by clicking the Excel close box. 47

Mekko Graphics User Documentation Link To Excel APPLIES TO: ALL CHARTS Link to Excel is a feature that allows you to import data from Microsoft Excel into Mekko Graphics. This feature is used in the event where you have a fixed chart that points to a changing data source (for instance, a weekly sales report) which allows you to simply replace the data source and refresh your chart, rather than repeatedly copy and paste new data each time the chart needs an update. Once a link has been made, Mekko Graphics will remember the Excel range that was used so that future updates can be made. You can define a selection in Microsoft Excel with a name, and link to that named range in Mekko Graphics. Steps to Link to Excel Creating a Range in Microsoft Excel In Microsoft Excel, select the range you wish to name by highlighting the cells you wish to be included in the range. 2. Once highlighted in Excel, go to the Insert menu, choose Name, Define 3. Name the range (hint - Microsoft Excel does not allow spaces in this name) 4. Ensure the spreadsheet has been saved at least once. 5. Click ADD 6. Click 7. In Office 2010, to name a range you just need to select your range, right click and choose Define Name. Linking to Excel 1. Close Microsoft Excel 2. Launch Microsoft PowerPoint and open the chart for which you wish to establish a link 3. From the Chart tab, go to the Misc section 4. Click on the Excel drop down menu 48

To link to an existing named range, click the Browse button and navigate to the location of the spreadsheet containing the named range. Choose the first radio button Use an Existing Named Range. Select your desired named range from the drop down menu. The address of that range will appear in the Address field below. To create a new range, choose the radio button Create a New Named Range. Mekko Graphics will create a range on-the-fly based on the selection in Excel. 49

Mekko Graphics User Documentation 7. Click 8. The data from that named range will auto-populate your data view. Advanced Tip - The Address field contains the worksheet name, which must be surrounded by single quotes if that name contains any spaces. For example, if the worksheet is named Sales Data, be sure to add single quotes around the address field name 'Sales Data'!$A$15:$I$19. 50

Chart Creation Remove Link to Excel APPLIES TO: ALL CHARTS 1. You may remove any established links to Microsoft Excel from Mekko Graphics. The Remove option is only enabled if there is already an established link. It is not enabled if there is no link. Removing a link simply removes the reference to Excel; it does not remove the data. 2. To Remove a link to Excel: 3. From the Chart tab, go to the Misc section 4. Click on the Excel drop down menu 5. Choose Remove 6. The data will remain in your data table; however, the link to Excel is now broken. 51

Mekko Graphics User Documentation Refresh Link to Excel APPLIES TO: ALL CHARTS You can manually refresh linked data from the Excel spreadsheet. The refresh can be for one chart or can be initiated for all charts in your slide deck through the Refresh All Excel Links function in Microsoft PowerPoint. Mekko Graphics allows you to manually refresh an established link to Excel. When you refresh your link, the data in Microsoft Excel will re-populate the referenced data table. Therefore, any changes to the data in your Excel range will be reflected in your data sheet. The Refresh option is only enabled if there is an established link. If there is no link, the Refresh button is disabled. To Refresh a Link to Excel 1. From the Chart tab, go to the Misc section 2. Click on the Excel drop down menu 3. Choose Refresh The data will refresh the link. 52

Chart Creation Open Linked File in Excel APPLIES TO: ALL CHARTS Mekko Graphics allows you to open the linked file in Microsoft Excel. You can view the Microsoft Excel range and even make changes directly in Excel. When you refresh your link, any new data in Microsoft Excel will re-populate the referenced data table. To Open a Linked File in Excel: 1. From the Chart tab, go to the Misc section 2. Click on the Excel drop down menu 3. Choose Open Linked File 53

Mekko Graphics User Documentation Entering Negative Values Certain charts, by their nature, will not accept negative numbers. Negative values are permitted for the following charts: Marimekko, Bar-Mekko, Stacked Bar, Cluster Bar, 100% Stacked Bar, Horizontal Cluster, Horizontal Stacked Bar, 2Y Cluster Bar, Cascade, Horizontal Cascade, Line, 2Y Line, Stacked Bar Line, Cluster Bar Line, 2Y Stacked Bar Line, Pie chart, and Relative Gantt (a Pie chart interprets a negative value as a positive value and a Relative Gantt interprets a negative value as 1). Negatives values are NOT permitted for the following charts: Area Chart, 100% Area Chart The following restrictions apply to the bubble and scatter charts. XY Linear Bubble - both X and Y values may be negative, but bubble size must be a positive number. X Log Bubble- X Log value must be greater than zero, and bubble size must be positive number. Y Log Bubble - Y Log value must be greater than zero, and bubble size must be a positive number. XY Log Bubble - Both X and Y log values must be greater than zero and bubble size must be a positive number. Growth-Growth - both X and Y values may be negative, but bubble size must be a positive number. Growth-Share - X values must be greater than zero, and bubble size must be a positive number. ROS ROA vs RMS - X values cannot be greater than zero, and bubble size must be a positive number. XY Linear Scatter - both X and Y values may be negative X Log Scatter - X Log value must be greater than zero Y Log Scatter - Y Log value must be greater than zero XY Log Scatter - Both X and Y log values must be greater than zero 54

Chart Creation Entering Zero Values Certain charts have specific rules for how values of zero are displayed in the chart. In Mekko and Bar charts, if a series is displayed as a bar and a segment in that series has a value of zero or is blank, the segment is not drawn in that chart and the label for that segment is ignored (will not exist in the Label Manager). For Cluster Bar charts, if a bar has zero height due to the sum of the bar segments equaling zero, the bar is displayed at a net height of zero and both the bar labels and totals are displayed. If all segments are zero, the bar label is displayed, but no segment or total labels are displayed. They also are not displayed in the Label Manager. For a bar of zero width (Marimekko or Bar-Mekko), segment labels are not displayed and bar labels and bar totals reside in the Label Manager as Unplaced. For Line or Bar Line charts, if a segment value (point) is blank, Mekko Graphics will not draw a line through that point. If the segment value is zero, Mekko Graphics draws a line through the zero point value. For Area charts, if a segment value is blank or zero, it is treated as zero value. For Pie Charts, if a segment value is blank or zero, the segment is not drawn and the segment label is ignored (will not exist in the Label Manager). 55

Formatting Your Chart Chart-Level Formatting Chart Level formatting includes formatting options that affect the entire chart (not specific series, segments, or bars). Your options for chart-level formatting for bar, line and area charts are: Colors Totals and Number Formatting Average Lines (both computed and manual) Growth Lines (stacked bar and cluster bar chart types) Your options for chart-level formatting for bubble and scatter charts are: Colors Average Lines Quadrant Lines Growth/Share Lines Normative Band Regression Lines Please refer to the section on Gantt for Gantt chart formatting options. 57

Mekko Graphics User Documentation Overview of Color Mekko Graphics comes installed with a default color palette (including 4 color shades), and no shading color. A color palette defines the available colors that you may choose for your Multi-color or Black and White charts. Draw order defines the order in which these colors will display for series in your chart. No Shading color is the color you would choose if you had No Shading selected as your color style. In addition to the color palette that your chart utilizes, you can also select custom colors for your chart on the fly. You can then apply these colors to either series or segments in your chart and those colors will stay with your chart until you remove them. If you wish to change either the default colors in your chart and/or the draw order of those colors, you can do so easily through the Preference Manager. The Preference Manager contains a Color Manager which allows you to set color definitions for your charts. Mekko Graphics Preference Manager comes equipped with five standard color sets available through the drop-down button: 1. Mekko Graphics Standard displays the default color palette and draw order for Mekko Graphics 4 and Mekko Graphics Mekko Graphics 3 Standard - displays the default color palette and draw order for Mekko Graphics Mekko Graphics 99 Standard displays the color palette available through our oldest Mekko Graphics version. 4. Mekko Graphics Extended - displays an extended color palette to our Mekko Graphics Standard version 5. PowerPoint Standard displays the default color palette available through PowerPoint. In the Preference Manager, you may also create custom palettes and create custom draw orders for those colors in your chart. You can edit existing colors by changing the name or RGB value, add new colors, and delete colors from both your draw order and color palette. Once you are satisfied with your color palette, you can change your chart colors in Mekko Graphics by either segment or series. 58

Formatting Your Chart Chart Colors Mekko Graphics can automatically color each series of data in the default standard order. You may choose Multi Color, Black and White, or No Shading. Our Multi Color option offers a default multiple color option or you have the option to choose one of four color shades - Blue, Gray, Green, and Rust. APPLIES TO: ALL CHARTS To change the Color/Shading options for your chart: In the Chart tab, go the Chart section and click on the Color drop down menu. Select your desired color style. For the Multi Color option, choose from the available multi color shading choices. You may also choose Chart from the Format section of the Chart Menu, which brings up the Format Chart dialog box. Choose the desired shading style radio button and click. 59

Mekko Graphics User Documentation To change your default for color style for Multicolor, No Shading, or Black and White, use our Preference Manager. 60

Formatting Your Chart Growth Lines Growth Lines can be used in charts to visualize the difference typically between first to last bar, although it can be between any two bars (or between any two segments for cluster bar charts). The line is drawn from the start bar to the end bar with an arrow pointing in the direction of the growth. APPLIES TO: STACKED BAR, STACKED BAR LINE, 2Y STACKED BAR LINE, CLUSTER BAR, 2Y CLUSTER BAR, CLUSTER BAR LINE, AND 2Y CLUSTER BAR LINE CHARTS There are two types of growth lines: automatic and modified. An automatic growth line is defined as a line with any start and end bar, the default color, default line style, default arrow size, a calculated (default) vertical offset, and the default number format as defined in your chart. A modified growth line is defined as a line that is not automatic. Stacked Bar Chart Family By default, a growth line s Start Point is the first valid bar in your chart, and the End Point is the last valid bar in your chart. A bar is invalid if: It is hidden It is marked as a placeholder The bar does not contain any positive segments (i.e. Positive Segments Total = 0) If you change the definition of the first and last bar after inserting an automatic growth line that uses the default start and end bars, the growth line will accommodate to the next valid bar. If there is no available valid bar, the growth line will disappear. If you have a growth line with a custom-defined start and end bar, and one of those bars is made invalid after the insertion of the growth line, the line will be removed. Cluster Bar Chart Family By default, a growth line s Start Point is the first valid segment in the first cluster, and the End Point is the first valid segment in the last cluster. A segment is invalid if: It is hidden It is marked as a placeholder 61

Mekko Graphics User Documentation The segment value is negative or zero. If you insert an automatic growth line and one of the segments is rendered invalid, the line will be drawn to the next valid equivalent segment in the next available cluster. In determining the start line value for an automatic growth line, Mekko Graphics looks for the first valid segment in the first cluster that ALSO has an equivalent valid segment in the last cluster. In a cluster bar chart, you can draw a growth line from any valid segment to any other valid segment in two different clusters (i.e. you cannot draw a growth line between two segments in the same bar cluster). For any growth line, the slope of the line is calculated based on the position of the two bars. If you sort bars, all automatic and modified growth lines will be retained based on the new sort. Both lines and net lines are excluded from all growth line calculations. Growth lines will not be retained upon chart conversion. Inserting a Growth Line To insert a Growth Line, go to the Chart tab and from the Growth Lines menu item, choose Insert Growth Line or Insert Custom Growth Line. The Growth Lines button is a split button. The top-most half of the button operates independently from the bottom half of the button. For a quick insertion of a growth line, you may choose the top half of the button and Mekko Graphics will insert an automatic growth line with the default first and last valid bar as the start and end bar of your chart (for a stacked bar chart) or the first valid segment in the first cluster and first valid segment in the last cluster (for a cluster bar chart). Inserting a Growth Line via the Insert Growth Line menu item, will insert an automatic growth line. Inserting a Growth Line via the Insert Custom Growth Line menu item will bring up the following dialog box. 62

Formatting Your Chart STACKED BAR ADD GROWTH LINE DIALOG BOX CLUSTER BAR ADD GROWTH LINE DIALOG BOX The Start Bar and End Bar values will default to the first and last valid bar of your chart. You may also choose to insert a growth line that has a different start or end bar (i.e. does not use the first and last bar in your chart). You can define the Start Bar and End Bar by selecting the appropriate bar in the drop down menu. You can also define the appearance of the line by selecting the line color, line style, line width and arrow width. A preview of the arrow will update as you make your appearance selections. You can modify the Value Number Format of your growth line values either by keeping the Default or by customizing the number format values. Mekko Graphics gives you the ability to define the Default Number Format for your growth lines, so that all future growth lines will have your defined format. Defining the Default Number Format You can define the default number format for all of your growth lines. Setting the default number format ensures that all growth lines inserted after setting the default will inherit the number format defined as 63

Mekko Graphics User Documentation the default. To define the default number format for growth lines, go to the Format Numbers dialog box and select the Growth Line Values type. Here, you can define the number format as a Percent or Number, display units and/or currency values, and define both the Decimal Place format and Thousand Separator format. Insertion of Multiple Growth Lines You may insert more than one growth lines in your chart. Subsequent growth lines will be placed above the position of highest growth line in the chart. Removing a Growth Line You may delete a specific growth line by right-clicking the line and choosing Remove Growth Line from the contextual menu. You may remove all Growth Lines from the chart by choosing Remove all Growth Lines from the main menu. 64

Formatting Your Chart If you delete a bar which is either a start or end point of an automatic growth line, the growth line will accommodate to the next available valid bar. If the growth line contains a custom start and end bar (not first and last bar), and one of those bars is deleted, the growth line will disappear. Managing Growth Lines You can manage the growth lines in your chart by choosing Manage Growth Lines from the Growth Lines Menu. This will bring up the following dialog box. 65

Mekko Graphics User Documentation Here you can add, remove, restore, or edit any growth line in your chart. Adjusting a Growth Line Once a growth line is inserted, you can manually adjust growth lines by 1. vertically moving the line itself (changing the vertical offset), 9. 66

Formatting Your Chart or 2. moving either the start or end points to a different valid bar (changing boundary points). If a bar is invalid, you will not be permitted to move either the start or end point to that bar. If you drag the start or end point of a line to different bar, the slope value (label) will accommodate. If you change the vertical offset, or change the boundary points (start and end points) of the line, the label remains automatic and placed. However, if you move the growth line label independent of the line, the label becomes manual. If a line is modified with a manually defined vertical offset and you change the data of your chart (and that change affects either the Start and/or End Bar of your chart, the midpoint position of the line will be retained, and the angle of the line will be adjusted to accommodate the new data values. 67

Mekko Graphics User Documentation Changing Direction To change the direction of a growth line, simply right click the line and choose Change Direction. This action will change the boundary points of the line by swapping the start and end points of the line (will draw the arrow on the opposite side of the line). It will also adjust the label value to accommodate the change in growth line direction. 68

Formatting Your Chart 10. Formatting a Growth Line Each growth line will have a line format, a number format, a start and end bar, and an arrow shape and size. Growth lines will inherit the properties of the default growth line definition, but are able to be edited by right clicking the growth line and choosing Edit Growth Line, or simply by double clicking the line, which brings up the Edit Growth Line dialog box. 69

Mekko Graphics User Documentation Appearance You may accept the default (automatic) appearance of your growth line, or you may customize the format of your line by selecting a different Color, Style, Width or Arrow Width. Value Number Format For the growth line label, you may accept the default value number format or customize the format of the label by displaying the label as a Percent or Number, specifying units and/or currency, choosing the number of decimal places and whether to use a thousand (1000) separator. Restoring Growth Lines You may restore a specific growth line by right-clicking the line and choosing Restore Growth Line from the contextual menu. 70

Formatting Your Chart You may restore all Growth Lines from the chart by choosing Restore All Growth Lines from the Growth Lines menu. Restoring a growth line will restore the line to its default vertical offset on the chart, retaining the boundaries points of the growth line as they are defined by the user. Additionally, restoring a growth line will also restore the label to the original value and location even if the label is edited or moved. If the label is edited and the user restores the line, the edits will be lost. Since the Change Direction command simply changes the start and end point of a line, and Restore action does not touch the boundary points of a growth line, restoring a growth line will retain any Change Direction action done to that line. 71

Mekko Graphics User Documentation Adding/Removing Segment Links Linking segments allows you to draw individual dashed lines between bar segments. APPLIES TO: CASCADE, HORIZONTAL CASCADE, STACKED BAR, HORIZONTAL STACKED BAR, 100% STACKED BAR, STACKED BAR LINE, 2Y STACKED BAR LINE CHARTS To Add Segment Links: Using one of the above chart types, go to the Format Segment tab, select the Segment Links drop down, and select Activate Segment Link Mode Green dots display the allowable segment link points. Click and drag from your starting point to ending point, drawing the segment link from one green dot to another. A green dot will indicate an allowable ending point based on your starting point. Continue drawing your segment links until you are satisfied with your chart. Red dots indicate the start and end points of an already-drawn segment link. 72

Formatting Your Chart To exit Segment Link mode, select the Segment Links drop down again, and choose the Activate Segment Link Mode toggle to turn it off. To Remove Segment Links: You can remove all of your segment links at once by choosing Remove all Segment Links from the Segment Links drop down menu. 73

Mekko Graphics User Documentation Definition of Slope The slope quantifies the steepness of the line. It equals the change in Y for each unit change in X. It is expressed in the units of the Y-axis divided by the units of the X-axis. If the slope is positive, Y increases as X increases. If the slope is negative, Y decreases as X increases. Definition of # of Objects The #of Objects is equal to the number of series being calculated in the regression line. Definition of R2 R 2 is a measure of goodness-of-fit. The value r2 is a fraction between 0.0 and 1.0. An r 2 value of 0.0 means that knowing X does not help you predict Y. There is no linear relationship between X and Y, and the bestfit line is a horizontal line going through the mean of all Y values. When r 2 equals 1.0, all points lie exactly on a straight line with no scatter. Knowing X lets you predict Y perfectly. Definition of Intercept The Y intercept is the Y value of the line when X equals zero. It defines the elevation of the line. 92

Formatting Your Chart Formatting Total Values You have the ability to format your bar and grand total values for your charts. 145 Labels Labels Label Manager Think of the Label Manager as the control panel of your chart. The Label Manager lists the status of every label in your chart giving you maximum control over the placement of each label. Below you will find sections on the following: Four Categories of Labels in the Label Manager Label Manager Statuses Label Manager Display How to Work with the Label Manager 137

Mekko Graphics User Documentation Four Label Categories in Label Manager: Labels on your chart are broken down into four different types, which correspond to the four different tabs displayed at the bottom of the Label Manager: 1. Series labels - includes all labels pertaining to series data 2. Bar Labels - includes all labels pertaining to X axis, or bars 3. Total Labels - includes both bar total and grand total labels 4. Misc Labels - includes all axis labels, data column/ row labels, average line labels, net line labels, and legend labels Tip: If there are any unplaced labels in any of the four tab categories, the category name will display as red. Possible Options for Status in Label Manager: The following categories comprise a comprehensive list of all the possible statuses that may display for any given label. Placed - the label is placed as initially drawn on the chart Unplaced - the label does not fit on the chart as initially drawn and does not display on the chart, but is displayed in the Label Manager. Resized - the user has manually changed the font size of the label Edited - the user has manually edited a label (includes Bold, Italic, Underline, font typeface change, font color change, strikeout, double underline, inplace editing, rotation, and slant) Moved - users have the ability to move a label by selecting it with the mouse and dragging it to a new location. At this point, the label s state becomes manual. Manual labels do not change their location when the chart is recalculated. Once a label is moved, it is considered a manual label and is no longer "connected" to the chart; that is, global changes to the chart will not apply to a moved label. In Other - the label has been placed in an other series. The Label Manager also allows segment labels to have their corresponding segments be added to the series deemed as the other series. A segment label in any state can be added to the other series. Once a segment is part of the other series (unless it is the other series), its label is no longer displayed and its status becomes In Other. The label manager also provides the affordance to remove a segment from the other series. SmartPlaced - the user has taken an unplaced or annotated label and SmartPlaced it on the chart. SmartPlace is a Mekko Graphics technology that intelligently positions a label in its home segment of the chart at the lowest possible font size ensuring it will display on the chart. When a label is SmartPlaced, the label manager first attempts to fit the label in its desired location. If the label fits, its status becomes placed. If the label does not fit, progressively smaller fonts are attempted down to the SmartPlace minimum font size parameter, and its status becomes SmartPlaced. If the label still does not fit, it overlaps its bounding rectangle, and its status remains SmartPlaced. 138

Labels Annotated - the user has chosen to annotate (place a label outside its home segment with a line drawn from the label to its home segment) a label on the chart. The process of annotation involves calculating an alternate position for a label based on the white space that remains after all the placed and SmartPlaced labels have been placed. An annotated label is then positioned in one of these alternate positions An annotation line, or flamingo, is then drawn from the label to its home segment. If an alternate position can be calculated for this label, the label s status becomes annotated. If no alternate position can be calculated, the label remains unplaced. There are two types of annotation lines in Mekko Graphics. 1. Labels which are annotated from the Label Manager To use them, select unplaced labels in the label manager and select Annotate or Annotate All Unplaced from the right-click menu. Once the option has been selected, the label will change its state to Annotated. In this state the system will automatically respond to any data change by reevaluating the label's position and the appearance of the annotation lines. This is only applicable to Segment labels. 2. Labels that were moved and have an annotation line to their original location To use them, simply move a label away from its base location. The label state is changed to Moved (manual) and not Annotated. When data changes the label will act as a manual label which means no automatic adjustment will be made to it. This option applies to Segment Labels, Bar Labels and Bar Total Labels. Hidden - the label has been hidden from view on the chart Label Manager Display You can customize the label manager display to suit your needs. Each column in the Label Manager is sortable. To sort by a particular column, such as status in the example below, click on the title bar for that column. Notice that the Status label has an arrowhead to indicate it is the sort key. 139

Mekko Graphics User Documentation Additionally, you can filter by status, which will display only the status filtered. Click the down arrow in the Label Manager title bar and choose the status on which you want to filter. Sometimes a label will have more than one status (for example, a label could be 'resized' and 'moved'). The following list outlines the hierarchy that determines which label to display if more than one action has been applied to a label. 1. Moved 2. Edited 3. Resized 4. SmartPlaced/Annotated. (These are mutually exclusive) 5. Placed For example, if a label is resized and moved, the Label Manager will display Moved in status field. If the label is SmartPlaced and Edited, the Label Manager will display Edited. If a label is Hidden, In Other or Unplaced that status will display regardless of any previous actions that might have been performed on that label. How to Work with the Label Manager You can select any label you see listed in the label manager. Click on the appropriate tab to select a label or multiple labels (though control-click). There is a rich right-click functionality through the Label Manager. You can right click on a label and all applicable actions for that label can be selected. 140

Labels Label Views Mekko Graphics gives you a wide variety of ways to view labels on your chart. To Change How your Labels are Displayed: Go to Chart tab and select Text menu from the Show Labels section. The options are as follows: 1. Show Series Name - shows only the series labels, but not the values of the labels 2. Show Values and Labels - shows both series labels and their values on the chart 3. Show Values - shows only the values of the labels, but not the series labels Note, these are not enabled if Hide All is selected in the Label Manager To Change Which Labels are Displayed: Go to the Chart tab and select Bars menu from the Show Labels section. The options are as follows: 1. Show All - shows all the labels in every bar 2. Hide All - Hides all labels in all bars. The Label Manager will display all series labels as hidden. 3. Show First Bar Only - shows only those labels in the first bar. The Label Manager will display all other series labels as hidden. 4. Show Last Bar Only - shows only those labels in the last bar. The Label Manager will display all other series labels as hidden. Advanced Tip - Chart Level Views override Segment Label changes Changing the chart level state always resets all segment level states. For example, if you choose Show All from the Label menu, and then hide a label for a specific segment in the first bar, and then change your view to First Bar Only, all labels in the first bar will be shown and no labels in other bars will be shown. 143

Mekko Graphics User Documentation Overview of Labels It is important to have the ability to customize your chart's look in order to communicate information effectively. Mekko Graphics gives you tremendous control and flexibility with your chart labels, allowing you to build eye-catching, effective charts that give a compelling message. Labels on your Bar chart are broken down into four different types: 1. Series labels - includes all labels pertaining to series data 2. Bar Labels - includes all labels pertaining to X axis, or bars 3. Total Labels - includes both bar total and grand total labels 4. Misc. Labels - includes all axis labels, data column/row labels, average line labels, net line labels, and legend labels With Mekko Graphics you have various label view options and can change those options with a click of a button. An important feature of Mekko Graphics is its built-in Label Manager. The Label Manager lists the status of every label in your chart giving you maximum control over each label. Mekko Graphics' unique fit-test technology also ensures placement of at least 90% of your labels at the appropriate font size for your data. And Mekko Graphics also includes its innovative SmartPlace technology, which allows the user to place any label that initially does not fit onto a chart onto the correct chart location. Inplace Edit One way to edit a label is by inplace editing. Inplace editing allows you change the text of any label on your chart without changing the text in the spreadsheet. This is a very useful tool in the event that you do not want your original data to change, but you wish to change display of your labels on the chart. APPLIES TO: ALL CHARTS To Inplace Edit Double-click the label you wish to edit. This places you in edit mode, and allows you to change the text of the label. 144

Labels 1. Edit your text. 2. Feel free to utilize the formatting options available for either part or all of your label. An overview of those options is below. When done, hit ESC or the your mouse. Bold, Italic, Underline, or click off the label with 3. Left Align, Center Align, Right Align Changes the contrast (Black or White) of the selected text or label Opens the font dialog and allows you to change the font of the selected text or label Changes the font size of the selected text or label 4. The text is changed and the label status becomes Edited in the Label Manager. 145

Mekko Graphics Functions Chart Views There are three major ways to view your chart in Mekko Graphics. Data View - Used for entering your data. Displays your Excel spreadsheet with an icon of the chart that dynamically displays as your data is entered. Format View - Used primarily for formatting your chart and managing chart labels. Displays the chart and does not display your data sheet. Combo View - Used when the user wishes to see their data and chart at the same time. Displays the chart and data simultaneously for maximum efficiency in chart editing. Relative sizes of views are customizable. You can also choose to Show/Hide your Spreadsheet Panel and Show/Hide your Label Manager from any view by choosing the below two buttons, respectively.. 147

Mekko Graphics User Documentation Margins Mekko Graphics gives you the flexibility to customize the look of your chart by adjusting the boundaries of various chart components. 1. From the Chart tab, in the View Section, choose Show/Hide Layout Margins 2. Margin boundary lines will appear on your chart. You can adjust your margins by clicking and dragging on the margin handles. Moving margins changes the proportion of space allocated to the different chart components (i.e. charts, grand total, data columns, legend, etc.). 3. Click and drag the handle of the margin to resize up/down or left/right. By clicking and dragging you can add space or reduce space for different elements of the chart, such as data rows and columns, x axis, legends, bar totals, and the chart itself. 4. To turn off the Margin View, click the Show/Hide Layout Margins toggle again. 148

Mekko Graphics Functions 5. After making margin changes, you can always reset your margins to the default margin setting by selecting Reset Margins 149

Mekko Graphics User Documentation Fit Test With your data entered, Mekko Graphics will try to place a minimum of 90% of the labels within a 3-point font size (called the fit test spread), based on your data. Mekko Graphics can do this because of new functionality called the Fit Test. The fit test is a newer, smarter technology that uses an algorithm to ensure that your chart attempts to place as many labels as it can and that the labels have a relatively consistent font size. It is controlled by the two icons on the far right of the toolbar: the lock and the exclamation point. When you create a chart, this algorithm attempts to fit all the labels in your chart at the possible largest font size (maximum font size) within a 3-point spread. If it cannot place 90% of the labels at this font size, the maximum font size continues to decrement one point until 90% of the labels are able to be placed. If that font size decrements to a certain size defined as a minimum font size plus 2 points, and still cannot place 90% of the labels, then those labels will become unplaced. The font size of all automatically placed labels in your chart will be in the range (spread) of three points, thus creating an internally consistent label size for all labels in your chart. The result is a more professional chart, created right out of the box. Because the Gantt chart is a distinctive type of chart, it necessitates different rules for fitting text than other charts. In the Gantt, task descriptions drive all other elements on the chart. The size of task descriptions dictate placement of all other labels. Therefore placement of all other elements on the gantt chart are dependent on the size of the task description. It is for this reason that task descriptions will be fixed in location. APPLIES TO: ALL CHARTS Lock/Unlock When this button is in the unlocked state each time a change is made to the chart., Mekko Graphics re-evaluates and re-draws the chart When this button is in the locked state, a locked fit test is run any time a change is made in the chart. Users can edit their data or use functions in Mekko Graphics that affect the fit test; however, the chart labels will stay within the fit test spread. You will probably wish to have your chart in an unlocked state when you are entering data or when you are making general changes to the chart format, bars, series, or labels that affect the look of the entire chart: i.e. chart color changes, show labels and values, number format totals and segment values, bar sorting biggest on bottom, changing the maximum axis value, etc. At the point where you start making changes that affect individual labels, you will likely want your chart to be in a locked state because you will not want these changes to affect either the font size or placement of other labels on the chart. The fit test works with this assumption. Given the above assumption, the fit test will be in an unlocked state upon creating any new chart. The state will remain unlocked until one of the following three events occurs, at which point the state will change to locked: 150

Mekko Graphics Functions 1. An action is performed on a label that results in that label changing to something other than a Placed or Unplaced status. This includes smartplacing, annotating, adding to other, editing, inplace editing, and resizing. 2. Manually locking the chart. Once you manually locks the labels in a chart, the chart will never automatically unlock. 3. Mekko Graphics is closed. If that chart is reopened, the state will be locked. If the user unlocks a chart manually after it has been locked, the chart will remain in an unlocked state and be saved in an unlocked state upon exiting Mekko Graphics. Legacy charts (charts created in earlier versions of Mekko Graphics) will be in an unlocked state upon opening and then automatically lock. Run Best Fit Font This button is enabled only when the Lock/Unlock Label Fit Test button is in the locked state. Pressing this button will manually recalculate the fit test and adjust the font size of the labels on your chart. Other Functions Mekko Graphics provides an easy way for you to format your chart with some familiar Microsoft-based functions and some toolbar functions unique to Mekko Graphics. Please refer to the pages for the specific areas of functions of interest. Once you have created or edited your chart, click the Save and Close button from the Mekko Graphics icon to save your changes, exit Mekko Graphics, and return to Microsoft PowerPoint. Click here for more information on the Preference Manager. 154

Mekko Graphics Functions Annotation Lines and Labels Segment labels also have the ability to be annotated. Annotation means that Mekko Graphics calculates an alternate position for a label and then places the label in one of these alternate positions. An annotation line, or flamingo, is then drawn from the label to its home segment. If an alternate position can be calculated for this label, the label s status becomes 'annotated'. If no alternate position can be calculated, the label remains 'unplaced'. There are two types of annotation lines in Mekko Graphics: 1. Labels which are annotated from the right click off the label or the Label Manager To use them, select unplaced label(s) in the Label Manager and select either Annotate or Annotate All Unplaced from the right click menu. It is also possible to select a smartplaced label from the Label Manager and select Annotate. You may also do this by right-clicking on a smartplaced label in the chart. Once the option has been selected, the label will change its state to 'Annotated'. In this state the system will automatically respond to any data change by reevaluating the label's position and the appearance of the annotation lines. Annotation from the Label Manager is only applicable to Segment Labels. 2. Labels that have been moved and have an annotation line to their original location To manually annotate a label, simply move a label away from its base location. The label state is changed to 'Moved' (manual) and not 'Annotated'. When data changes, the label will act has a manual label which means no automatic adjustment will be made to it. This option applies to Segment Labels, Bar Labels and Bar Total Labels. Annotation lines Toolbar Buttons Show/Hide Annotation Line : Turn annotation line on\off for selected labels. Smart Annotate Selected Labels to segment labels. : Try to annotate a group of labels in the most efficient way. Applies Increment Annotation : Increases the distance of the annotation line from the label. Decrement Annotation : Decreases the distance of the annotation line from the label. 155

Mekko Graphics User Documentation Pie Charts and bubble charts are special in the way annotation lines are implemented. In a pie chart, the annotation line will always be drawn to a fixed point on the pie s arc. In a bubble chart the annotation line will be drawn to the closest point on the bubble. Changing/Converting Chart Type You have the ability to change/convert one chart sub-type to any other chart sub-type within a chart type. With chart conversion you can convert any given chart X to any requested chart Y (provided they are in the same chart type) in such a way that any properties that exist in both X and Y chart types will be the same after the conversion. If a property exists in chart X and not in chart Y, the property is dropped. APPLIES TO: ALL CHARTS WITHIN THE SAME CHART TYPE To change chart types 1. From Mekko Graphics Chart tab, Chart section, click to change chart types 2. Choose the chart sub-type you wish to change. You can only change chart sub-types from within the same chart type. (For example, you can change a Cascade chart to a Cluster Bar). Changing between different chart types is permitted but will delete all data and give you a blank chart. 156

Mekko Graphics Functions 3. Click. 4. You will find more information on the conversion between the two types of Gantt charts in the Gantt chart section on conversion. Advanced Tip: If the source chart (the chart you are converting from) contains data that is invalid (e.g. zero or negative values) on the target chart (the chart you are converting to), you will receive a message that some data is invalid and no chart will be drawn. 157

Legends Legend Overview Mekko Graphics offers the ability to show your labels as a legend, and provides flexibility in the placement and look of your legend. APPLIES TO: ALL CHARTS Showing the Legend 1. Go to the Chart tab and choose Show in the Legend section The legend displays as a single column on the right hand side of the chart. If all legend items do not fit, you have the ability to increase the size of the legend area (either horizontally or vertically) and Mekko Graphics will fit items in this new area. To hide the legend, simply de-select Show from the Legend menu. All legend items will always have the same font size If there are too many legend items to fit in the defined legend area, the last items (text and key) will not be displayed and the legend item will be treated as unplaced in the label manager under the Misc tab. Components of the Legend The following diagram defines the different components that comprise the legend in Mekko Graphics. A Legend key is the colored rectangle A Legend text box is the rectangle containing the legend label 165

Mekko Graphics User Documentation A Legend item is a single legend key and legend text pair The Legend area is the rectangle that contains all the legend items Options for Handling Unplaced Legend Items Mekko Graphics provides numerous options for dealing with legend items that become unplaced. 1. Increasing the size of the legend area Similarly to a Microsoft PowerPoint text box, you can select the legend area and resize it. Small circles appear in the four corners of the legend area and in the middle of each side. Drag the legend areas from any of these circles to increase the size of the legend area. As the size increases, Mekko Graphics will attempt to fit all labels in the new legend area at the legend font size. Tip: You may choose to increase the size of the legend area even if all legend items are placed. In this case, the legend items distribute themselves evenly from the top to the bottom of the legend area. This allows you to group the legend items by spreading them out in a larger space, or create a horizontal legend. 2. Reducing Legend Font size By reducing the legend font size, you can create more space to fit any legend labels that might be unplaced at a larger font size. To change the legend font size, go to ##Format, and click on Legend Font.. Mekko Graphics will then attempt to place all the legend items in the legend area at the new legend font size. 3. Smartplacing all unplaced legend items 4. Changing the text of a legend item You can always change the text in your legend item to shorten or abbreviate it in order to ensure legend text fits on your slide. 166

Legends Format Legend Key The Format --> Legend Key... function allows you to customize your border, line, and color for a selected legend key. APPLIES TO: ALL CHART TYPES 1. To format a specific legend key, select a legend key and go to Format --> Legend Key Here, you can specify the border, line, and color of your selected legend key. 3. Choose your style and then click. 167

Mekko Graphics User Documentation Resetting your Legend You can restore all original legend settings by clicking the Reset Legend button in Format Legend dialog box. You can also reset your legend by right-clicking the legend area and selecting Reset Legend.. Reset Legend will restore item order, legend size, legend location, legend item location, legend item font size, font family, font attributes, font text, legend area settings (border, transparency), and all hidden legend items. Resetting your legend does not restore manual legend key changes. To reset individual legend items (as opposed to the entire legend), right click the item in the label manager and click Restore. Restoring individual legend items will restore the item to the legend font size, font family, font attributes and text. It will also restore a smartplaced legend label to unplaced. You can Restore individual legend items or Restore All. 168

Preference Manager Preference Manager Overview The Mekko Graphics Preference Manager allows you to have full customization of Color Definition, Draw Order, Font Size, Default Region, and Miscellaneous chart settings, as well as the ability to export and import your custom Preference Manager settings.
