Welcome to Distance Nursing Studies At! We are delighted that you have chosen as the provider of your undergraduate nursing education! StFX not only offers exceptional educational opportunities but also a unique sense of family among students and the institution. You have made a significant decision which will have a tremendous impact on both your personal and professional lives. The StFX distance education model has been nationally recognized as meeting the highest standards. In spring 2006 the program received the maximum 7-year accreditation from CASN (Canadian Association of Schools of Nursing). The programs were presented with an Award of Excellence for Instructional Design and an Award of Excellence for Student Support Services in 1996-97 from the Canadian Association for Distance Education. While national awards are always gratifying, the success of our students provides the real reward. DISTANCE NURSING PROGRAM OFFICE The Program Office is the centre of organizational activity for all distance nursing programs. It is here that all details of a student s academic program are coordinated. Along with a multitude of other program activities, staff organize and distribute all course materials and exams, regulate office hours to facilitate student contact with professors, and offer support and guidance to students. ST. FRANCIS XAVIER UNIVERSITY University History Saint Francis Xavier (StFX) University was founded in 1853 in Arichat, a small town in Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia. Two years later, the institution moved to Antigonish. In 1866, by act of the provincial legislature, full university powers were granted and in 1897 the university became the first co-educational Catholic college in North America to grant degrees to women. Known internationally for its pioneering work in adult education, is today a co-educational institution of over 3,500 students. The University offers general, major and honours programs through departments in its faculties of arts and science. Students are able to pursue undergraduate as well as graduate education at St. Francis Xavier University in programs that are rated among the best in Canada. Two thirds of the student body are from Nova Scotia and the remainder come from Canada and other countries. The Xaverian Family StFX University believes in promoting the dignity and uniqueness of everyone in its community. Faculty, staff and students all work together to create an environment in which each person feels accepted on an intellectual as well as an emotional level. Out of this community effort has grown a sense of family, the Xaverian Family, which has bonded classes and generations. A unique symbol of this tradition and bond is the X-ring that graduates proudly wear. Alumni speak of a strong sense of loyalty to each other and to the institution, and of friendships and commitments that continue well beyond their graduation from the university. StFX Motto Quaecumque Sunt Vera ("Whatsoever things are true") is from St. Paul's letter to Philippians (4: 4-9). The remainder of the verse continues: "...whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report. If there be any virtue and if there be any praise, think on these things." StFX has upheld a commitment to the intellectual and spiritual development of its students. Its motto is to preserve and convey "whatsoever things are true." StFX extends this motto beyond academia to the individual person. Integrity, dignity and respect for the worth of each individual are important concepts in the University's search for truth. Student Handbook 7

Outreach StFX has always emphasized service to one's community. As a result, many graduates have entered public life and professions dedicated to helping people. Those who founded StFX in 1853 saw the university as a means of supporting the education of Roman Catholics in north eastern Nova Scotia to prepare them for public service. The majority of professors were priests, with many of them having gained doctorates in philosophy and theology from other Roman Catholic universities. While StFX sustains a strategic plan that builds on its Catholic heritage, it openly welcomes students and staff of all religious denominations. The growth and development of the institution over the next century were guided by strong individuals motivated by faith in God and a desire to serve others. Initially studies consisted of philosophy, theology, classics, literature and natural science. Growth in curricula saw the addition of professional and pre-professional programs. Students were offered an educational experience that integrated the acquisition of knowledge with a philosophy of life. Personal responsibility, respect for others and service to humanity were emphasized and an acute awareness of the University's responsibility to ensure just social order was promoted. This awareness took dramatic form in the Antigonish Movement, a program of adult education initiated by the University during the 1920's and 1930's to combat poverty and social unrest in Atlantic Canada. In assisting needy farmers and fishermen to help themselves, the University advocated the full development of all persons in society. At the heart of the Movement was a belief in the capacity of the common man to act responsibly for the common good. Location is located in Antigonish, Nova Scotia, Canada. Antigonish is a small town (pop. 4,700) located in an area known as the Highland Heart of Nova Scotia. The town's Scottish heritage is reflected in the concerts and competitions of the annual Highland Games, one of the oldest competition events in North America. The traditional greeting to visitors is "Ciad Mile Faille" (Gaelic, meaning one hundred thousand welcomes ). The surrounding area offers a wide variety of other attractions, including beautiful beaches, picturesque countryside, sports development camps for children and professional theatre (Festival Antigonish). StFX borders the Trans Canada Highway (Route 104). The Campus The attractive StFX campus consists of 30 buildings on 110 acres of well-kept grounds. Facilities include classrooms, laboratories, chapels, offices, residences, dining halls, playing fields, gyms, swimming pool, rinks and theatre. StFX is home to the Charles V. Keating Millennium Centre, a multi-purpose complex serving the residents of northeastern Nova Scotia and StFX students. Housed on the campus of StFX, this centre includes state-of-the-art facilities for a variety of sports, recreational and educational activities. There are two ice surfaces, an aerobics/dance studio, walking track, Student Handbook 8

IT training services, a health and fitness centre and a variety of facilities for conferences, concerts and special events. The adjoining Oland Centre contains additional facilities, including two gymnasiums and equipment; squash and racquetball/handball courts, a sauna and a 25-metre swimming pool. There are also playing fields and a ¼ mile track. StFX is particularly proud of the Angus L. MacDonald Library. Expanded in 1986 by the addition of G. Richard Chater Hall, it now has a 900-seat capacity and houses approximately a half million books. Bloomfield Centre is the Students' Union Building (SUB) and is a four-storey structure located on the upper campus. It contains a cafeteria, hair salon, post office, games room, campus radio station, campus newspaper office, bookstore, art gallery, conference rooms, a canteen and several lounge areas. Services in the building include an information desk, health and counselling centre, the offices of the Dean of Students, the Canada Employment Centre and the offices of representatives of various denominations. NURSING PROGRAMS Philosophy establishes the intellectual and moral development of its students as its principle objective. The institution asserts a belief in Christian values and principles that is integral to the dignity and worth of every human being. The philosophy of the School of Nursing and the Distance Nursing Program is based on similar beliefs about the human person and the educational process. In addition, the School of Nursing promotes related values concerning health and the nature of nursing which are reflected in the Nursing Curriculum. Historical Background Nursing education began at in 1926 with the establishment of a Department of Nursing and Health. The initial baccalaureate program prepared nurses for teaching and supervisory roles in diploma schools of nursing and community health agencies. In the late 1940's and early 1950's, the program's clinical content was strengthened. In 1966, the present four-year program leading to a Bachelor of Science in Nursing was introduced. The curriculum promotes the personal development of students through fostering the acquisition of cognitive, affective and psychomotor skills necessary for the practice of professional nursing. Faculty have extensive clinical and teaching experience and are active in professional associations, research and other scholarly pursuits. At present, the on-site program has an annual intake of approximately 100 students. The School of Nursing (designated in 2002) is located in Marguerite Hall. Student Handbook 9

The Learning Environment Education is both a life-time process and commitment which involves contact with the past and acquisition of skills which enable the person to participate in shaping the future. The School of Nursing believes that education is a human awakening concerned with the development of human potential and recognizes individual dignity and values. Within this process the teacher should construct an environment that rewards curiosity critical thinking, problem-solving and self-directed learning. Students should be actively involved in the learning process, be responsible for individual learning needs and develop self-direction in the search for nursing knowledge. Teaching and learning are always complementary, based on an interpersonal relationship which supports the interchange of ideas and the sharing of knowledge. The Nature of Person The curriculum is value-oriented with the core value as the dignity and worth of the person, family and community. When members of the School of Nursing identified person as the core value in the curriculum, they were thinking not only of the client as person but of the student as person and nurse as person as well. The teaching-learning experiences are intended to assist students to grow towards maturity as professionally caring persons. Students are assisted in this process by developing reflective practice and learning to self-reflect and self-actualize through the caring and professional support received from peers, faculty/clinical associates, and nursing colleagues in institutional and community settings. The Nature of Health Emphasis is placed on the personal, family, group, and community dimensions of health, with nursing practice approached as a practical and deliberate response to health-related requirements. The broader determinants of health are also vital to the picture of health including consideration of employment/working conditions, social environments, physical environments, personal health practices and coping skills, healthy child development, biology and genetic endowment, health services, gender, and culture (Health Canada, 2002). The Nature of Nursing Nursing practice involves a transdisciplinary and multisectoral collaborative approach in assisting individuals, families, groups, and communities to optimize their health. The nursing profession has evolved because caring persons have experienced the desire to empower persons, families, groups, and communities in their development of health and self-care potential, to help them identify and avoid threats to health, to cope with disabilities and limitations in self-care potential, and to prepare for the inevitable human experience of death. The major goal of the curriculum is to prepare professional nurses who are proactive and responsive to the changing health needs of society and able to engage in safe, ethical, evidence-based practice based on the CRNNS Standards for Nursing Practice (2004), the CRNNS Entry-Level Competencies for Registered Nurses (2004), and the Canadian Nurses Student Handbook 10

Association Code of Ethics for Registered Nurses (2002). The scholarship of discovery, teaching, application, and integration is critical to the advancement of nursing practice and the achievement of positive client health outcomes. StFX School of Nursing Mission Statement The Mission of the School of Nursing is to provide the finest nursing educational experience in Canada in an environment where the undergraduate comes first. Students, faculty/clinical associates, staff, alumni, and partners in the health field, as members of the School of Nursing, are precious resources for the fulfillment of the mission. Members of the School of Nursing are committed to fostering a learner-centred environment. The search for truth is embraced through processes of professional caring, critical inquiry, reflective practice and life-long learning. The School of Nursing exists to prepare nursing graduates to engage in evidence-based professional practice. Members of the School of Nursing seek to develop, advance, and disseminate nursing knowledge and proactively influence public policy, thereby actively contributing to the health and well-being of individuals, groups, communities, society, and the global community. School of Nursing Program Goals Irrespective of the program option completed, graduates will be able to: 1. Engage in evidenced-informed professional nursing practice that is directed toward promoting health, preventing illness, managing disease processes, restoring optimal function, and alleviating suffering in clients across the life span in a variety of settings and in accordance with the Standards for Nursing Practice (CRNNS, 2004), the Entrylevel Competencies (CRNNS, 2009), and the CNA Code of Ethics (2008). 2. Incorporate and promote the principles of primary health care and population health. 3. Address the determinants of health throughout all phases of the nursing process. 4. Demonstrate skill in ethical, moral, and legal decision-making with respect to health and health care delivery. 5. Act and interact in a professional manner. 6. Demonstrate caring, accountability, and responsibility in all nursing actions and interactions. 7. Implement nursing practice models that promote the principles of self-care and societal responsibility. 8. Uphold the ideals of social justice, inclusivity, and equity through respectfulness, cultural safety, and cultural competence. 9. Support inter-disciplinary and multi-sectoral collaborative participation in health care delivery and research. 10. Use facilitative and deliberate interaction in all client encounters. Approved by the SON: June 2008 Minor revisions: December 2008 DISTANCE NURSING PROGRAMS Purpose and Rationale In 1982 the Canadian Nurses Association (CNA) adopted a resolution that the minimal educational requirement for the beginning nurse by the year 2000 be a baccalaureate degree in nursing. The resolution was subsequently adopted by various provincial and territorial nurses' associations across Canada. This mandate is also supported by the Canadian Association of Schools of Nursing (CASN). The need for further education in the nursing profession has arisen because of major scientific and technological advances. Other factors related to the need for higher education include an increased incidence of chronic illness, the growth of consumer and women's health movements and changing costs of health care. To ensure the delivery of competent and relevant nursing services, the nursing profession, like other health disciplines, requires practitioners be prepared at the university level. Goals The competencies required by a nurse in the new millennium require a strong foundation in the physical, biological and social sciences, critical thinking skills, health promotion strategies, stress management, the ability to deal with rapid advances in knowledge and technology and the ability to deal with increasingly complex ethical issues in health care. As such, a primary goal is to prepare nurses for these professional requirements. Underlying this goal is the assumption that nursing is a significant personal and social service involving a skilled, deliberate response to health needs and health problems. Academic courses provide a basis for confidence and competency in this demanding role, in addition to preparing nurses for changing professional standards. StFX University strives to meet this educational challenge by offering a baccalaureate program that combines professional theory, nursing practice, studies in the humanities and nursing-related courses from the physical, biological and behavioural sciences. StFX University also recognized that Distance Nursing Programs are beneficial only to the extent that they are accessible by students. Most nurses, because of work and family commitments, find it impossible to pursue full-time studies or re-locate to a university. A Student Handbook 12

secondary goal of the Distance Nursing Programs is to ensure that core requirements can be fulfilled through part-time study and home-based systems of instruction. The Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN) Program was originally offered to nurses in Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island but has since grown to serve the needs of nurses throughout Canada and beyond. Over 1,000 nurses have been accepted into this Program since its inception in 1988. Organizational Structure All Distance Nursing Programs are currently structured under the StFX Continuing & Distance Education Department, which is the department responsible for administering all credit and non-credit schedules for part-time study at StFX. In addition, the Distance Nursing Programs constitute one of three units governed by the StFX School of Nursing. The StFX Department of Adult Education, which offers a graduate study program for adult educators, serves in an advisory capacity to the Distance Nursing Programs. All Program policies and procedures are reviewed and approved by the Steering Committee. LEARNING-AT-A-DISTANCE Home-based study has many challenges and rewards. However, the degree of success largely depends on several factors: (1) a student's level of motivation, commitment and selfdiscipline, (2) the quality of course materials, (3) available support systems, and (4) organization. REWARDS Studies have shown that students in professional, correspondence-style programs perform as well (sometimes better) than students who attend classes in the traditional setting. Further, adult students have important advantages over their younger counterparts. Adults are clearer about their motivation, have greater maturity and broader experience and are better at setting priorities, characteristics that are important to the distance learner. Flexible Schedule. Students can create a weekly schedule for tackling course requirements that does not seriously conflict with work and family schedules. Financial/Time Savings. There is no regularly commuting to and from campus to attend traditional lectures. Criterion-Based Learning. Students know in advance and in detail what is expected as course materials are provided at the beginning of the course. This is a tremendous advantage in terms of planning time management and exam preparation. Personal Development. All distance nursing program courses are highly compressed and greatly accelerated in comparison with many other correspondence-style programs. As a result, students develop and enhance time-management skills, personal and intellectual resourcefulness and independence. Flexibility in Course Scheduling. There are two prerequisites for all other required nursing courses. Once completed, students may take all other required nursing courses in the order they are scheduled. However, if a student requires a break between courses for whatever reason, it is acceptable to pick up the missed course if it is offered at a later date. CHALLENGES Although self-paced study at home is a uniquely convenient way to learn, it is not inherently easy. It is equally important to recognize that most of the learning (whether on-site or by distance) takes place outside of the allotted lecture time. Thus, not only does the distance student need to prepare to invest the equivalent lecture time, they also must devote additional time to reading, studying, doing research and preparing assignments. The amount of time required to invest in each course is an especially important consideration for students intending on taking more than one course simultaneously. Students often report that home study is challenging because of the amount of reading involved, but such is the nature of this method of study. It is highly likely in home study to spend approximately 60 to 70 percent of the course time on required and supplemental readings and completing self-tests, practice questions and exercises; about 15 to 20 percent Student Handbook 14

on writing assignments; and the remainder in discussions with the professor and writing exams. Managing Time. Efficient time management is a key to success in learning at a distance. As well, it is important that students discover a balance between work, family and education. Recognizing and implementing this balance is part of what will sustain you over the next few years. Meeting Specified Deadlines. Each course has set time frame with specified dates for final exams (as set out in the University calendar). Thus, students cannot take as much time as desired to fulfil requirements for any particular course. Studying Independently. Students sometimes miss the face-to-face intellectual stimulation and feedback that on-site students experience from regular contact with each other and the professor. As home-based study can be a sometimes lonely intellectual experience, StFX has established a support system of resources and contacts. These are explained later in this handbook. Keep in mind that student success in any distance education course is often a result of an individual s organizational and time management skills. Armed with these talents, a student can take full advantage of the flexibility and freedom offered through distance learning. GENERAL PROGRAM INFORMATION The distance nursing curriculum is designed specifically to respond to the needs of Post-RN students and build on existing knowledge and competencies. Courses in the Distance Nursing Programs are adapted from existing on-campus courses offered through the School of Nursing. These courses are often taught by the same faculty and meet the same high standards of curriculum development and instruction as the on-campus courses. Grading, student assessments and examinations for distance courses generally follow the same formats established for on-campus courses. Course Format In traditional undergraduate programs (i.e. on-site), students would be required to attend lectures as often as three times a week per course. Through distance education, completion of work contained in each lesson in the learning package constitutes attendance at lectures and can be completed in a self-directed manner in the comfort of your own home. All courses required for completion of distance nursing programs are delivered through distance education (i.e. 'correspondence') format using print-based materials. In distance studies, lectures and corresponding reading materials are printed in advance and provided in full to the student. Most nursing courses also include nursing - practice assignments that will take the student into community/institutional settings. Student Handbook 15

The course manual is a highly structured document with specific instructions about the course. It outlines requirements, learning objectives, schedules, and presents actual learning materials in a series of lessons which often include the following: Introduction (includes instructor's commentary) Outline of specific learning objectives Course evaluation/assignments/exam dates Theoretical materials Study questions/ Self-test activities Textbooks are an additional supplement to the learning package and must be purchased by the student through the StFX Bookstore. Call the Book Store toll-free at 1-888-867-2450. Book order forms are also available on-line on the book store website http://www.stfx.ca/campusstore/ Select link titled Students Information then follow links Off Campus and On-line Courses, Distance Ed Texts, Distance Nursing. Credit System The credit system is based on traditional university programs for students in full-time attendance during the regular academic year. An on-campus course taught 3 hours a week for the full academic year (September-April) has a value of 6 credits and is called a full course. An on-campus course taught 3 hours a week for half of the academic year (i.e., one term - September to December or January to April) has a value of 3 credits and is called a half course. Courses in the Distance Nursing Program are weighted at three- and six-credits. A post-rn student may claim 60 practice hours per credit (1 full course = 6 credits or 360 practice hours; 3 credits = 180 practice hours). Course Duration Each three-credit course lasts 10 weeks from start-date to final exam and is equivalent to 100 hours of study. Each six-credit course lasts 20 weeks and is considered 200 hours of study. There is an annual 'break,' which occurs throughout July/August where students can choose to relax or to complete another course. Study Time Each course varies in time requirements. As a general rule, three-credit courses will require you spend a minimum of 10 hours per week to complete required readings, assignments and prepare for exams. In addition, nursing courses that contain a nursing practice component will require at least another 12 hours per week. Student Handbook 16

ACADEMIC REGULATIONS Academic regulations outlined in this manual briefly introduce information contained in the Academic Calendar for StFX. For more detailed information, refer to the current Academic Calendar. To obtain a personal copy of the calendar, contact the Registrar s Office or access the calendar on-line at http://www.stfx.ca/calendar/. In some areas, regulations have been adapted to meet the needs, requirements and circumstances of the distance learning experience. In the case of dispute or misunderstanding, the Academic Calendar serves as the official reference. Duration of Program Academic policy requires that all course requirements be fulfilled within a ten-year time frame. For example, students entering the Program in 2010 have until 2020 to complete all program requirements. However, it is possible to complete the BScN Program in three to five years. Academic Standing A passing grade of 60% in each nursing course is required in order to receive credit for that course. The passing grade for all other courses in all programs is 50%. A student must maintain a cumulative average of 55% to remain in the program of study. Students failing to maintain this average will be placed on academic probation. To avoid dismissal from the Program, the probationary student must achieve passing grades in the next three courses taken. Students who regain satisfactory standing and subsequently incur academic probation for a second time may be dismissed from the Program. Course Requirements To receive credit for a course, the student must complete all specified requirements that contribute to the overall grade and/or evaluation of that course. This includes midterm and final exams, clinical practicum participation and all assignment components. Students who fail to do so will not be granted credit for the course. Students must also maintain a satisfactory level of performance in both the nursing practice and theoretical components of the course. In addition to completing nursing practice assignments which contribute to the final grade for the course, students are also expected to maintain satisfactory status by keeping all appointments with clients and supervisors, and by attending scheduled conferences and group presentations, where applicable. Prerequisite Courses Students must take N135 and N115 sequentially as these two courses are prerequisites for all other nursing courses (with the exception of nursing electives N473, N483, N488, N490 and N497). Consult the Master Schedule of Courses (see Appendix) for recommended scheduling of subsequent courses. Student Handbook 17

Humanities, Sciences, and Elective Courses These courses may be taken at any time in the 10-year time frame for Program completion. However, the School of Nursing recommends that you take science courses as early as possible. Science courses, although not strictly a pre-requisite for higher-level nursing courses, provide important background knowledge. Transfer Credits Upon acceptance to the university students may apply for transfer credits for course applicable to their program of study. All transfer credits are granted through the Program Director and Dean of Science. A maximum of 30 credits may be taken through other institutions and applied to BScN requirements as transfer credits. Clinical or practice-based nursing programs (e.g., critical care certification) completed as part of a work requirement may be considered for transfer credit. If a program meets the specified requirements, the student may be granted a one-time transfer credit for the open nursing elective N499 (3 credits). Any student wishing to take a non-stfx course for transfer to their current program of study is required to have a Letter of Permission approved by the Dean of Science prior to enrolling in the course. Letter of Permission forms are available upon request from the Program Office or through MesAmis (on-line forms) link on the MesAmis introduction page. Deferred Examination There may be extenuating circumstances (e.g., illness, bereavement, family emergency, etc.) which may prevent a student from writing an examination. The student must notify the course professor and Program Director prior to the examination date unless circumstances prevent the student from doing so. Students are required to provide a written explanation and request to take the examination at another date. In the case of personal illness, a medical certificate is required. Permission to write an examination at a later date is at the discretion of the course professor. If granted, an alternate exam date will be provided. Course Failure Any course failure, most particularly a failure in any of the required nursing courses, greatly jeopardizes a student s chance for successfully completing the program of study. A failure results in the student being placed on academic probation. Repeated failures can result in the student s dismissal from the program. It may be possible for a student to repeat a failed course pending approval from the Program Director. In this case, the repeated course would be taken in conjunction with the next course on the schedule. Credit for the next course would be granted only if a minimum grade of 60% is achieved in the repeated course. Student Handbook 18

There is no guarantee that make-up courses will be provided in any program of study. However, depending upon the individual circumstance, the Program will make every effort to provide an opportunity for the student to repeat the course in a following session but at the student s expense. Students are not eligible to write supplementary exams for any course. Grade Disagreement If a student disagrees with a grade on an assignment or exam, s/he may contact the course instructor to discuss. If there remains disagreement with the grade, a student can submit concerns in writing to the Program Office along with a copy of the original assignment (exams are not returned to the student). The concern will be addressed by the Program Director in consultation with the course professor and the Chair of the School of Nursing. If the assignment is reviewed and re-graded, students need to be aware that the new mark may be lower than the original score. Appeals If a student is still dissatisfied, an official appeal should be made in writing to the Program Office within 10 days of receiving the re-marked assignment. Enclose a $35 cheque payable to StFX University which is refunded if the appeal is in favour of the student. The appeal will be reviewed by the Program Steering Committee in consultation with the professor. The committee's decision is final and will be communicated to the student in writing. Final grades may be appealed through the Program Director by submitting a written explanation of the grounds for appeal along with a $35 cheque payable to. Again, this fee is refunded if the appeal is in favour of the student. Through the Program Director, a special Appeals Committee will be established which includes professors from the academic department involved. The decision of this committee is final. Official Transcripts Student must request official transcripts of grades by contacting the Office of the Registrar. If your balance for the course is not paid in full, any requests for official transcripts will not be processed. If you have any questions relating to a request, contact the Office of the Registrar by phone tollfree 1-877-867-STFX(7839), fax 902-867-5458 or e-mail registr@stfx.ca. Students are responsible for obtaining all midterm and final grades via the StFX website (go to http://www.stfx.ca/ - select Banner/mesAMIS link at bottom or screen; then STUDENTS on the right side of the screen. You will be prompted to enter your StFX ID number and a personal identification number (i.e., PIN number). PIN letters containing full instructions on how to access grades and other information are issued to students upon course registration. Please contact the Program Office should you require assistance. The University does not permit the early release of marks by telephone. Academic Recognition Students who maintain an average of 80% or better in their last 30 credits of StFX courses (five six-credit courses or ten three-credit courses) are placed on the Dean's List, a distinction that Student Handbook 19

will then appear on their academic transcript. Dean list recognition will take place at convocation. Students may graduate with the designation of Distinction. In order to qualify for Distinction, students must maintain an average of at least 80 on the best 33 credits taken through StFX. Of the grades considered in calculating the above average, none shall be below 75. Academic Misconduct All StFX students are expected to maintain the highest academic integrity. It is important to be aware of the penalties for plagiarism and the use of unauthorized aids in assignments or examinations as outlined in the Academic Calendar. Cheating and Academic Dishonesty. The professor will report any case of cheating or academic dishonesty to the Director of the School of Nursing. The Director will report to the Dean of the Faculty who will ensure that an impartial assessment is made by an independent member of the Faculty. For an impostor writing an examination in place of a candidate, if both the candidate and the impostor are students of the University, the candidate shall have zero entered on his record for the course concerned and both shall be dismissed immediately from the University for a minimum period of one year. If the impostor is not a member of the University, the University may take what legal action is open to it. Candidates cheating in an examination or assignment shall receive zero for the work concerned. Upon conviction for a second offence, they shall be dismissed immediately and shall not be permitted to re-enter the University for a minimum period of one year. Collaborators shown to be culpable shall be subject to the same penalties. Plagiarism. According to Black (1979), plagiarism is the act of appropriating the literary composition of another, or parts or passages of his [or her] writings, or the ideas or language of the same, and passing them off as the product of one s own mind. Students found to have used the work of other authors under the guise that the work is their own will be academically penalized. Students disciplined under the above-cited clauses may appeal their cases following the procedures outlined in the Academic Calendar. DISTANCE NURSING PROGRAM ADMINISTRATIVE PROCEDURES The following section outlines administrative procedures for distance nursing students. Students are advised to become fully familiar with and to adhere to these processes. Failure to do so may affect academic grades and/or standing. Course Registration and Tuition In an effort to improve service to students we are pleased to advise that distance nursing students may now register on-line for courses. Please review the web registration information prior to registration (see appendices section). Feel free to contact the Program Office at any time should you experience problems and/or have questions. Student Handbook 20

Please note that students whose accounts are not in good standing with the university will experience problems registering on-line. If you wish to check your account status, you should contact Pati Myette in Students Accounts directly at 902-867-3719, or you may contact the Program Office to be transferred and to avoid long distance charges. If you have not completed the prerequisite for a course, you will also receive an error message. To register on-line for courses you will require the CRN (course reference number) for each course. This number will be posted in the most current copy of our E- Newsletter which will be sent directly to your StFX Web Mail account approximately every two months. It is very important for all students to read the newsletter closely for current information/changes pertaining to the program curriculum, upcoming courses, awards etc. A current copy of the newsletter will also be posted to the Distance Nursing Website www.stfx.ca/academic/continuinged/nursing.html Textbooks Textbooks and course packs (a compilation of selected articles from various nursing journals) are an additional supplement to the learning package and must be purchased by the student through the StFX University Bookstore. Monies for associated textbooks will not be accepted or processed by the Program Office. Call the Book Store toll-free at 1-888-867-2450 to speak to a bookstore representative to arrange payment/shipment for texts/course packs. Fees Payment The course fees are set on an annual basis (June) by the Board of Governors. Students outside of Canada are subject to additional distance fees to cover the shipping and handling costs of course materials and examinations. Students who are funded by their employing agency or other organization must direct their sponsor to submit separate payments for tuition and textbook costs to the appropriate offices (see above). Course and textbook payments may be made via credit card, personal cheque or money order in Canadian funds. ** New at StFX ** E-Payment student account information and electronic payment service. E-Payment enables you to make payments by credit card directly on-line. However, please note if using this form of payment you must request a receipt directly from the Business Office receipts are not issued automatically. The Business Office currently accepts Visa, Mastercard & AMEX. Official Receipts T2202A receipts for Revenue Canada Taxation purposes are automatically generated by the StFX business office and available via the StFX web page to students (in late February). Official receipts are issued only if the student has submitted this request. Receipts can be downloaded from MesAmis by following the instructions included at the top of log in page and by using your StFX ID# and pin. Student Handbook 21

Proctors Students are required to obtain a qualified proctor to supervise the writing of their exams. A proctor must be in an administrative position and affiliated with an institution or organization (i.e., college, university, hospital or other health care organization) to be considered. Students often approach their supervisor or unit manager at their place of employment. While not always possible, it is recommended that the student choose a person who is willing to assume this responsibility for the duration of the program of study. Guidelines for Proctors and the Proctor Information Form are included at the end of this manual (see Appendix). It is the responsibility of the student to ensure this information is completed by their prospective proctor and forwarded to the Program Office in the first two weeks of starting their program of study. Any change in proctor information during the course of study must be clearly communicated in writing to the Program Office no less than two weeks prior to the examination date. Students who fail to submit this information to Program Office will not receive an examination. Examinations Major examinations normally occur at the middle and end of each course (i.e., midterm and final exam, respectively) and vary in format and length depending on the course. Specific exam dates are included in each course manual. All final exams are scheduled to be written on the last Friday of the course with an alternate examination date of the preceding Wednesday. The student is responsible for making the necessary arrangements to ensure attendance. Exams are written at a pre-arranged exam location under the supervision of an approved proctor (see previous). University exam booklets and/or computer cards are provided on which to write your answers, if appropriate. Assignments Students are required to submit written assignments to the Program Office unless specified otherwise. Specific directions will be provided in each course manual regarding assignment requirements and information on submission, i.e. e-mail, fax or regular post. Unless prior arrangements are negotiated, late submissions are liable to a percentage reduction in grade for each day the assignment is late. It is the student s responsibility to explain in detail, in advance and in writing any circumstance that prevents the submission of an assignment on time. Failure to submit a written explanation could jeopardize the extension. At the discretion of the professor, unexplained late assignments may not be accepted. Graded assignments are returned via regular mail or electronically to the students Webfx e-mail account. While every effort will be made to get material back as quickly as possible, the time required for grading will vary according to the nature and length of the assignment. Contact the Program Office with any questions regarding the availability of an assignment or exam grade. General submission guidelines: 1. Retain a copy of your assignment by photocopying and/or saving to computer disk. Student Handbook 22

2. Use fax, e-mail or regular mail using the contact information provided in the front of the course manual to submit the assignment to the Program Office, if indicated. 3. Call the Program Office immediately after faxing the assignment to ensure all pages are received and are legible. E-mailed assignments will receive an automatic confirmation of receipt from the Program Office. NOTE: If you fax or e-mail your assignment, do not send a paper copy via regular mail unless specifically requested to do so by the Program Office. 4. Use sufficient postage and postmark no later than the due date of the assignment if using regular mail service. Course and Program Withdrawal To drop a course without incurring academic or financial prejudice, students are required to notify the Program Office in writing by completing and submitting a withdrawal no later than three weeks from the start date of the course. Written notice must contain the signature of the student and can be faxed or mailed to the Program Office. Students must return the course manual and materials (with the exception of textbooks) for courses dropped during this time frame. Similar notification is required to withdraw from a program of study. It is important to observe the formalities of withdrawal to avoid academic penalty. Without proper notification, a student remains on the official class and program lists. Thus, absence from exams and other requirements will result in a failure on the student s university transcript. Refunds If a student withdraws from a course within three weeks of the course start date, s/he is eligible to claim a tuition refund, less a $50 processing charge. After the three-week deadline has passed, there is no refund issued. Your application for a refund must be made in writing to the Program Director post-marked within the three-week period. Course and Program Evaluation Ongoing feedback from students contributes to our dynamic and responsive programs. Students are encouraged to provide constructive suggestions for program improvement at the end of each course and the end of the academic year. Evaluation responses are anonymous, unless students specify that they wish their names to be linked to their comments. All evaluation feedback is compiled and held in the Program Office until final grades for that course have been submitted. Student feedback is then forwarded to the specific professor. All student evaluations are destroyed following compilation of the final report. At the conclusion of each course students are invited to formally evaluate the course design, delivery and professor. Accessing Student Grades Student grade reports are not issued by StFX. Students are required to obtain their examination grades through the StFX website by following these instructions: 1. Start Internet Explorer or web browser of your choice and go to www.stfx.ca 2. From the StFX homepage, click the text link MySTFX (at the top of the page). 3. Click on the STUDENTS link in the middle of the next page you will then be prompted to enter your StFX ID in the User ID box. 4. Enter your PIN. (pin letter issued upon acceptance into the Program) 5. Click Enter mesamis. 6. On the Services and Links page (Welcome page) familiarize yourself with the selections and documents on the left-hand side of screen and on the top of the screen. 7. To view October, December, or final grades, select mygrades in the top blue section; the transcript page will automatically pop up in a new screen. 8. To print, click the print button in the print options dialog box (otherwise click cancel). 9. Close out window when finished viewing and/or printing your transcript. 10. Click back to go back one level to exit your account. Student E-mail Account (WebMail) On admission to a program of study, students are issued a WebFX e-mail account (eight characters which look something like x2002abc ) and an e-mail password (eight characters consisting of letters and numbers which looks similar to c913h97g ). To access your account, go to the StFX University home page (http://www.stfx.ca) and click on the WebMail tab in the centre of the page. Then type in your User Name (aka WebFX e-mail account) and associated password (described above) to access messages and/or send messages to the Program Office. Students are required to become familiar with using their assigned StFX e-mail account and deleting messages to ensure mailboxes do not exceed size limits. E-mail accounts are accessible worldwide providing you have internet service. Important program and course updates are communicated to students via their web e-mail account. If you have not received this information, contact the Program Office. Distance Nursing Website Complete program information and regular updates can be found by accessing the Distance Nursing Programs website at http://www.stfx.ca/academic/continuinged/nursing.html As well, this site contains links to relevant student information such as APA format, health-related websites, nursing research links and on-line writing centre support. This site is under constant revision to ensure the most recent information is available. Check frequently for new information. Student Handbook 24

Application for Degree The application for degree is an official form completed by the student that notifies the Registrar s Office of their intent to graduate. Students are responsible for assessing their eligibility to attend both X-Ring and Convocation by completing the degree application form on-line from the StFX website (MesAmis). It is strongly recommended that students reassess their eligibility at the end of each calendar year. Please note a recent change in policy by the Registrar s Office will require students to apply for a specific graduation. For example, if you had applied for fall 2007 graduation and did not complete degree requirements in time, your name will not be automatically carried forward to spring 2008 graduation. You must reapply for the next convocation If a student is enrolled in a course from another university in the final semester before graduation, it is the student s responsibility to ensure that an official transcript is sent to and received by StFX before the deadline specified in the current Academic Calendar. Failure to do so may jeopardize a student s graduation. SPECIAL EVENTS X-Ring Ceremony The X became the official symbol of the renowned StFX X-Ring in 1942. The first X-Ring ceremony took place in 1958 and today is regarded by graduating students as being one of the most remarkable events in their university experience. The X-ring ceremony is an annual ceremony held on December 3 rd to celebrate the Feast Day of St. Francis Xavier. To be eligible to receive an X-Ring, students must be within 18 credits of degree completion requirements (i.e., when the combination of completed and enrolled courses equals a minimum of 45 credits). When this criterion is met, students are required to complete a degree application to have their names placed on the official X-Ring list (see Academic Regulations section). Students should carefully consider the year in which they wish to receive their X-Ring. Most students prefer to receive their X-ring in the year in which they complete all courses because, in a part-time program, it may take a year or two to complete the remaining 18 credits required for degree completion. This would result in the incorrect year appearing on the ring. Ultimately, it is the student s decision of when to receive the X-Ring. Convocation There are two graduation ceremonies held each year at StFX. To apply for Spring Convocation students must notify the University Registrar by the deadline stated in the current Academic Calendar (usually October 1 st of the preceding year). For Fall Convocation students must notify the University Registrar by the deadline stated in the current Academic Calendar (usually July 15 th of that year). Student Handbook 25

DISTANCE NURSING PROGRAM PROFILES There are three distance nursing programs offered through StFX the Bachelor of Science in Nursing, Certificate in Continuing Care Nursing and Certificate in Gerontological Nursing. Bachelor of Science in Nursing Degree This degree program requires the completion of 63 credits. All courses are available through StFX; however, up to 30 credits may be transferred from other institutions. Academic Requirements The BScN Program requires the completion of 63 credits. These consist of seven required nursing courses (valued at three credits each for a total of 21 credits), 12 credits of nursing electives, 12 credits of humanities and 18 credits of science (chemistry and biology). Course requirements must be completed within ten (10) years of entering the Program. It is possible to complete this program in three to five years. All courses have been developed for distance delivery in order to provide increased access to courses for students. Students may complete all science, humanity and elective courses through StFX or gain credit for these courses through other institutions. However, a minimum total of 30 credits must be taken through StFX. If completing courses at other institutions, students must first obtain approval from the Dean of Science by completing a Letter of Permission. Letter of Permission forms are available upon request from the Program Office or may be accessed on-line via the StFX Banner / mesamis link (on-line forms). COURSE DESCRIPTIONS Required Nursing Courses (Total = 21 Credits) Nursing 135 Contemporary Issues in Nursing (3 credits) N135 introduces the philosophy and framework for nursing at and is a foundation for all subsequent nursing courses. It focuses on Nursing as a profession and its historical evolution to the present day. Theoretical and philosophical bases of nursing are explored, with a focus on Orem s self-care theory. Factors that influence contemporary nursing, such as legal and ethical issues, health care reform, the image of professional nurses, and changing health care priorities, are among the issues discussed. Nursing 115 Health Teaching and Learning (3 credits) Health teaching and learning is the essence of Health Promotion. Health promotion involves nursing interactions with individuals, families, and communities. Promotion of health is much broader than the prevention of illness, involving concepts of population health and social action that influence health and health behaviours. Factors influencing these concepts include sociocultural, economic, and political aspects, among other perspectives. N115 explores the nurse s role in health promotion and the teaching-learning process. Student Handbook 26

Nursing 201 Community Mental Health I (3 credits) Provides a comprehensive introduction to the application of mental health nursing principles to specific clinical disorders. The focus of mental health nursing is changing with a continuation of the shift away from the acute care setting to the community. More emphasis is being placed on prevention and health promotion than in the past. Community Mental Health Nursing I explores the foundations of practice and prepares the student for further study in mental health. Nursing 201 is a pre-requisite for Nursing 202. Nursing 202 - Community Mental Health Nursing II explores in detail, the application of mental health nursing principles to specific clinical disorders. Nursing 205 Community Health Nursing (3 credits) Online delivery only Explores community health nursing practice approaches in the context of a changing health care system. The major themes presented are community assessment; population focused approaches for nursing practice (epidemiology and demographics, health education, community development, primary health care, population health promotion) and aggregate populations (vulnerable populations, families, school populations, rural populations). Nursing 245 Aging and the Older Adult (3 credits) This course focuses upon the processes and changes associated with the aging of Canadians. The relevancy of theories, concepts, and demographics associated with universal aging are examined. Emphasis is placed upon the well-elderly and strategies to improve and maintain functioning and quality of life and how self-care competencies are used to cope with age-related changes. The normal aging process, attitudes, ethics, legal concerns, and psychosocial health are addressed, with strategies for the use of community resources and health promotion suggested. Nursing 425 Comprehensive Health Assessment (3 credits) The health assessment course focuses on a systematic assessment of a client's health status by means of a health history and physical examination. The theory component of the course deals with the content and process of a health history, as well as the normal functions and findings related to the various body systems. The practice component centers on the development of the assessment skills necessary to carry out a comprehensive examination of body systems for the purpose of identifying self-care requisites. Nursing 415 Nursing of Adults II (3 credits) Nursing 415 is a practice and theoretical course developed for distance delivery to Registered Nurse learners. Nursing 415 is designed to provide the senior nursing student with opportunities to study selected concepts associated with nursing care of adults. Community and/or institutional nursing practice experiences, with a major focus on enhancing leadership attributes and skills, may be selected by the student in order to facilitate the application of the nursing process. Students are provided with an opportunity to plan, implement, and evaluate a leadership experience of their choice. Required Science Courses (Total = 18 Credits) Biology 105 Introductory Cell Biology and Molecular Biology (3 credits) This course focuses on the structure & function of cells, cell division, patterns of inheritance, and the molecular basis of inheritance. Among others, topics covered include small & large organic compounds, organization of the cell, cell membrane, energy, enzyme & catalysis, pathways that release or capture energy, cell division (mitosis & meiosis), patterns of inheritance in humans, Student Handbook 27

molecular basis of inheritance (DNA structure & replication), gene expression (protein synthesis & gene regulation), recombinant DNA technology and genetic disease. BIOL 105 is a prerequisite for BIOL 115. Biology 115 Microbes in Human Health (3 credits) The course is an introduction to microbes from a human perspective, this course deals with viruses, bacteria and fungi. Topics include bacterial structure and function, bacterial genetics and antibiotic resistance, and viral structure and function. Biology 251 Human Anatomy & Physiology I (3 credits) Using an integrated approach to the study of the integumentary, skeletal, muscular, nervous and endocrine systems, this course provides students with a comprehensive working knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of these systems. BIOL 251 is a prerequisite for BIOL 252. Biology 252 Human Anatomy & Physiology II (3 credits) An integrated study of the cardiovascular, respiratory, urinary, reproductive and digestive systems, this course provides students with a comprehensive working knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of these systems. Biology 252 continues from Biology 251 and concentrates on systems involved in the maintenance of the body and reproduction. Biology 251 (Anatomy & Physiology I) and Biology 252 (Anatomy & Physiology II) together will provide you with basic knowledge about the structure and function of the human body. Chemistry 150D Fundamentals of General and Biological Chemistry (6 credits) Chemistry 150 is tailored to meet the needs and requirements of nursing students and complements other courses in nursing, biology and psychology. This course uses examples from human biology and medicine, an expansion of the coverage of organic functional groups and their properties and an introduction to the biological chemistry occurring in the human body to assist nursing students in understanding the chemical world within and around them. Required Humanities Courses (Total = 12 Credits) Nursing 330 Legal and Ethical Issues in Nursing Care (6 credits) Nursing 330 acquaints students with some of the major issues currently being debated in the field of health care ethics. Ethical principles such as autonomy, beneficence, non-maleficence and justice are reflected upon and discussed in the realm of the health care and nursing practice. Nursing 300 Research Methods (Sociology) (6 credits) Nursing 300 introduces students to the variety of research methods used in nursing science. Students learn the tools needed to conduct research or critically appraise the research literature. The course introduces quantitative and qualitative research designs, descriptive and inferential statistics, principles of ethical research, concerns about bias in research, and the value and challenges of research utilization in nursing. Elective Nursing Courses (Total = 12 Credits) Nursing 202 Community Mental Health II (3 credits) Examines the theory and concepts in mental illness, treatment regimens and nursing interventions. This course introduces the application of mental health nursing principles to specific clinical disorders, building on the foundations of practice explored in Nurs 201 (Community Mental Health Nursing I). Nursing 230 Nursing of Women, Children and Families (6 credits) Using a population health approach, this course examines the social, economic, cultural, and political perspectives that affect the health and health care of women, children, and families, both locally and globally. Students will explore selected issues in illness prevention, wellness promotion, and care during illness. Includes a community-based practice component. Nursing 488 Challenges in Aging: Implications for Nursing (3 credits) Nursing 488 is a course designed to increase the awareness and importance of research in practice and to enhance the present level of knowledge, skill and understanding of the physical, psychological, social and spiritual needs of the older client. Nursing 405 Nursing of Adults I (3 credits) A nursing practice and theoretical course designed to provide the senior Part-Time Post R.N., B.Sc.N. student with opportunities to render comprehensive nursing care and explore concepts related to adults who are experiencing, or at risk for complex health problems. Students select learning experiences that enable them to apply the nursing process in settings of their choice (acute, chronic, rehabilitative, community and/or ambulatory care). Cultural differences, the consequence of an altered immune system and infection, symptom management, women's health, and palliative care will be studied from a nursing perspective. Please note there is a computer component to this course (BlackBoard) Nursing 473 Basic Concepts of Pathophysiology (3 credits) On-line delivery only This course provides the student with an understanding of basic concepts of pathophysiology. Special emphasis is given to these processes as they affect and are affected by the aging process. Prerequisite: BIOL 105, 115, 251, 252; CHEM 150 recommended. Nursing 483 Hospice Palliative Care Nursing (3 credits) Nursing 483 is a three-credit senior nursing elective course designed to provide an overview of the theories, current practices, and relevant issues in the field of palliative care, with a major focus being placed on the nurse's role in palliative care. The importance of a holistic, patient/family centered, interdisciplinary approach will be emphasized, and in line with the philosophy of nursing at StFX University, the concepts of self-care and health promotion, as they relate to quality of life issues, will be incorporated throughout the course. Prerequisites: Current Registered Nurse status in your province of residence, and two years of clinical experience, or successful completion of three years of a four-year baccalaureate program in nursing. Nursing 490 Forensic Nursing (6 credits) On-line delivery only Forensic nursing refers to the application of nursing science and knowledge to legal proceedings. This course will examine the application of nursing science to the investigation and treatment of trauma, death, violent or criminal activity, and traumatic accidents within the clinical or community institution. Patient populations to be considered include: victims of sexual assault; elder, child and spousal abuse; unexplained or accidental death; trauma and assault; as well as the perpetrators of these and other criminal activity. Nursing 494 Leadership and Management in Nursing (3 credits) Introduces concepts related to nursing leadership theories and management models at an administrative level, as well as how they relate to the care of clients and management of the practice setting. Issues related to career planning and managing a career in nursing will also be explored. The focus of throughout the course will be on the importance of developing leadership skills throughout a nursing career. Nursing 497 Computers in Nursing (3 credits) On-line delivery only Nursing 497 is a 3-credit Nursing course which is designed to provide an introduction to Nursing Informatics and to enhance the use of the computer as a tool for effective information management in the practice of nursing. It includes CD-based course material and internet communication using Blackboard Learning System TM. Students will explore theoretical concepts related to information management and healthcare/nursing informatics; computer concepts and terms; computer applications in nursing practice, education, administration and research; trends and issues of information management in healthcare; and Nursing Informatics as a nursing practice specialty. Nursing 499 Nursing Elective (3 credits) *one-time only transfer credit This nursing elective is designed to give registered nurses credit for a hospital-based course or program. Courses are evaluated for credit on an individual basis by the distance nursing education committee. i.e. Certification courses via CNA, Critical Care Nursing, Occupational Health, Perinatal, etc. Nursing Practicum Most nursing courses have nursing practice requirements. This component of the course provides the student with the opportunity to apply course theory to actual practice situations. The purpose of the practicum is to enhance skills in analysis, critical thinking and communication rather than test the technical skills of experienced nurses. DISTANCE NURSING CERTIFICATE PROGRAMS Certificate programs in two clinical specialty areas are available by distance education for registered nurses in the BScN program, on-campus students or nurses interested in enhancing their personal/professional development. Designed specifically for practicing nurses, these programs enable nurses to develop a stronger theoretical base, enhance professional nursing practice and address health care needs across nursing practice and life continuums. Each certificate program is comprised of four three-credit nursing courses delivered individually over a ten-week period. Graduates are awarded a certificate of completion upon conclusion of all required courses. Current RN registration and one year clinical experience are required for entry into both certificate programs. Students who have graduated from the BScN Program and wish to continue studies to complete a certificate program must submit an application and associated fee to the Program Office for the desired program of study. I. Certificate in Continuing Care Nursing This certificate program is designed to prepare registered nurses to move into the home health care field by expanding their professional competencies and knowledge in this area. Courses include both theory and practical application of skills to facilitate nurses transition from the practice of acute care to home health care and include: N135: Contemporary Issues in Nursing N115: Health Teaching & Learning N205: Community Health Nursing N425: Comprehensive Health Assessment II. Certificate in Gerontological Nursing This certificate program is designed to prepare registered nurses to deliver holistic, effective care to older adults. Courses focus on developing knowledge and practice skills to enable nurses to address comprehensive needs of older client populations, identify strengths and professional care needs and include: N115: Health Teaching & Learning N245: Aging and the Older Adult N425: Comprehensive Health Assessment N488: Challenges in Aging: Implications for Nursing (formerly N246) For more detailed information on courses in each of these certificate programs, consult the Course Descriptions section of this handbook. See Appendix for curriculum checklists. STUDENT RESOURCES Integral to the Distance Nursing Programs are the unique support systems available to students. These include toll-free telephone access to course professors, mentoring program, distance librarians, on-line writing centre and the Program Office, with e-mail and fax correspondence options, and Program newsletter (EXCHANGE). Course Professor Although course manuals provide clear learning objectives and expository material, there may be occasions when students have trouble understanding a particular lesson and wish to clarify course expectations or discuss assignments. Each course manual contains the designated office hours for the course professor. Students are strongly encouraged to contact the professor during this time period. During the day (8:30 a.m. - 4.30 p.m.) questions or concerns can be directed to the Program Office where your call will be redirected to the professor. If the professor is not available, a student will be provided with a convenient time to call again. Professors in this program appreciate student response. It is possible that your inquiry may help other students, especially if the professor feels that a particular clarification should be communicated through a course bulletin. While telephone consultation may be a new experience for many students, it is important, especially at the beginning of a course, for students to become accustomed to using this route to clarify course expectations when needed. Also, resolve questions and concerns as early as possible; waiting until the day before an exam or an assignment deadline to seek assistance may be disastrous! The following are guidelines for students to consider prior to calling the course professor: 1. Ensure the answer to your question is not already contained in the course manual information. This is a basic courtesy to the professor and to other students who need the professor's time. 2. Have specific question(s) ready before you call and appreciate that the instructor's time is limited. The average conversation lasts about 5-10 minutes. If additional time is needed, you and your professor may negotiate discussion at a later date or through e-mail/fax correspondence. 3. Some questions may be easily answered by the Program Office staff. Mentoring Program New students are encouraged to call the Program Office to be partnered with a graduate or senior student of the Post-RN BScN Program. When a student requests this support, the program assistants will contact a student mentor living in their geographic area and set up an initial meeting between the two via email or telephone. Extended Library Services This service addresses your library needs for general information, orientation, research tips, private or group information sessions, library card concerns and general library assistance. Students who are more than an hour's drive from campus and who have already exhausted local resources may request a search for relevant books and/or articles through Extended Library Services. By contacting Extended Libraries Services when planning a working visit to campus, you can be assured that any necessary arrangements will be made in advance of your visit. Students are encouraged to submit short articles and ideas for XCHANGE. Items should be submitted at least one month in advance to ensure publication. The electronic version will be e-mailed to your StFX Web Mail account and can be found on the Distance Nursing web site http://www.stfx.ca/academic/continuinged/nursing.html Distance Writing Centre The Distance Writing Centre is an on-line resource for use by all students to support and enhance writing skills. The Writing Centre provides sample papers, correct APA format, and grammar and writing tips. Students can also access one-on-one guidance from a professional at the university Writing Centre. The Distance Writing Centre may be accessed through the Distance Nursing Program website at http://www.stfx.ca/academic/continuinged/nursing.html Click on the Writing Centre at right-hand side of the page and you will be able to access all materials in the Writing Centre. Canadian Organization of Part-time University Students (COPUS) COPUS represents all part-time students in Canada. Its activities include lobbying government on issues of concern to part-time students and encouraging communication between universities and part-time students. COPUS provides some funding to assist the establishment of new part-time students' associations. STUDENT LIFE STUDYING Budget at least ten hours a week although the amount of time spent on each lesson will vary. Take time to learn about the art of studying. The important thing is to identify techniques that work for you. Use your support network. Unless you are an exceptional or experienced student, do not hesitate to contact the Program Office and/or course professor if you still feel discouraged or feel that you need extra help. Study Basics 1. Motivate yourself to work. Remind yourself of your initial motivation to begin your program of study and that learning is an enjoyable experience versus a chore! 2. Follow a schedule for when and where you study. Make family and friends aware of this schedule so as to minimize interruptions. Set limits on how much you want or need to accomplish at a particular sitting. Student Handbook 33

3. Find a quiet place where you can concentrate, away from external noises and distractions. Try to shut out internal distractions too! 4. Take extensive notes as you proceed through readings and lesson activities. Summarize, consolidate, reduce and underline important points. Add these notes to your course manual following each section. 5. Reinforce learning by reviewing notes and lessons on a regular basis. The process of forgetting starts immediately after learning has occurred. Research shows that your retention of learned facts can be as low as 20% after only two weeks! 6. Ask questions. Contact your instructor if you are trying your best but still have difficulty in understanding a particular point or lesson. 7. Find a study partner. It may be helpful to connect occasionally with another student in your program of study to share information, strategies, solutions and to give mutual encouragement. 8. Talk to your family about the implications of returning to school. Explain why you have chosen to enrol in your program and seek their support. If you have children, you can be an excellent role model by demonstrating good study habits! SCHOLARLY WRITING In a distance program of study, evaluation relies heavily on the quality of written work. Scholarly writing is developed through practice and constant analyses of one s work and is fundamental to effective communication. Reference Text The APA Manual is the official guide to editorial style required for student use in the StFX School of Nursing. It gives instruction for correct punctuation, grammar, spelling, headings, abbreviations, quotation marks, citation of sources as well as very useful information to guide the writing process. Students are required to purchase a personal copy of this manual and become familiar with basic APA requirements as it will be utilized and referred to throughout your courses and assignments. American Psychological Association (2009). Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (6 th ed.). Washington: Author. Assignments Carefully prepare any written assignments with attention to style, appearance, content and adherence to timelines. When you receive your course manual, check the assignment pages in order to anticipate and plan for the written requirements of the course. Requirements will vary from course to course so thoroughly read the outline for assignments to gather information on specific requirements. Once returned, read and reflect on any feedback that is given on the graded assignment. Use the toll-free number to call your professor should you wish to discuss any feedback. Remember that Student Handbook 34

the instructor will not have a copy of your assignment to refer to when you call. Your inquiry would normally involve clarification of the meaning or emphasis of a particular comment. You may appeal grades you receive for assignments or examinations (see Academic Regulations). Whether writing a short report, an essay on a specific question, or a major paper: 1. Work from an outline. Start by listing everything you think should go in to your paper including topics, sub-topics and questions requiring answers. This information does not have to be in any particular order but is usually a reflection of the specific assignment requirements. Put the list aside for a few hours or overnight, then look at it again and order the material in a way that develops and illustrates the main point. Outline the list in point form with appropriate headings and sub-headings. This outline will channel the writing of the first draft, help structure paragraphs and prevent straying from the specified topic. 2. Gather required and specific information. Before beginning a first draft, have at hand any essential information to be included in the body of the paper (e.g., specific facts, quotations, definitions, etc.). This may involve additional research. It is at this point that students often seek clarification from the professor on their topic of interest. 3. Write a complete rough draft. Do this rapidly and spontaneously while following the outline. Do not worry about finer points of style but rather focus on communicating the main points of the paper as clearly and directly as possible. Once this draft is finished, review it in relation to the following points and make appropriate corrections. 4. Check for coherence. The flow of the sections of the paper should be logical and fluent. There should be a clear opening statement in which the purpose of the paper is evident. Ensuing material should support the opening statement. Each paragraph should present itself as a single idea yet still relate to the overall paper. Sentences must be grammatically correct. Headings should assist the reader in following your thought processes. 5. Check for concreteness. Provide support for the main points of the paper using specific evidence (e.g., paraphrasing the work of authors which support main ideas, use of quotations, facts, explanations, illustrations, examples, etc.). Carefully choose details which clarify, strengthen and lend credibility to the points made in the paper. 6. Check for clarity and readability. Use words and sentences that are simple and direct. Avoid jargon or specialized terms unless they are the best way to communicate the meaning you have in mind. Avoid long words when simpler ones will suffice. Vary the length of sentences but remember that shorter sentences usually communicate meaning more effectively than longer ones. Explain new words, technical terms or special definitions. This can be done by placing an explanation immediately following the use of the term. Wordiness and jargon often occur when the writer is trying to impress the instructor. Remove all padding. This entails removing irrelevant information, unnecessary repetition or ideas, trite phrases (e.g., "in this day and age," "as it were," "few and far between," etc.), unnecessary adverbial qualifiers (e.g., "somewhat," "rather," "quite," livery," etc.), excessive use of the first-person (e.g., "in my considered opinion"), or phrases that lend no meaning to the sentence (e.g., "At the present point in time," "in view of the fact that," "as a result of," Student Handbook 35

"the reason is because," etc.). Be direct and to the point. Review your first draft to remove all unnecessary words and phrases. You will be surprised at how this type of editing sharpens meaning and enhances readability. Choose the active rather than passive tense when using verbs in sentence construction. Passive sentence construction is a common flaw in undergraduate writing and deflates the energy of what it is you are saying. For example, rather than saying " it was reported by the Association " (passive construction), choose to say, the Association reported..." (active construction). 7. Check for technical consistency and accuracy. Be consistent in the use of quotation marks, abbreviations, headings, citation of sources, spelling and punctuation. Be sure to give credit to your sources by referencing accurately so as to avoid plagiarism. Refer to the APA Manual for specific details on how to reference properly. 8. Write a final draft. Once you have edited the paper, begin the final draft. Remember that a visually clear and attractive paper helps to create a receptive reader, and thus typed papers are preferred. Proof-read the paper and identify any errors in spelling, punctuation and grammar. It is often helpful to have a friend or colleague proof-read the paper as well. Examination Preparation Major examinations normally occur at the middle and end of each course (i.e., midterm and final exam, respectively). Exams vary in format and length, depending on the course. The following are suggestions to help with exam preparation: 1. Begin preparing right away. Preparing for an exam begins the first day of the course! Keep up with the work. Take notes/review on a steady schedule. There is no substitute for knowing the material. Research has demonstrated that distributing study and review of course materials over time is far more effective than last-minute cramming. 2. Know what's expected. Read carefully the learning objectives for each course and lesson. These basic lists of the skills/knowledge you are expected to acquire are an important feature of any course manual. Examinations relate directly to the learning objectives. 3. Nurture a positive attitude. In addition to understanding the course material, prepare physically and emotionally for the exam. Throughout the course, and especially just before exam day, eat well, sleep well, allow some time for rest and relaxation. Think only about your ability to do well! 4. Review and review again. In the few days before an exam re-organize your notes. Ask yourself sample questions. Discuss the exam with a colleague. Memorize essential details and definitions by using flash cards. 5. Plan to arrive early at the exam location so you can relax before-hand and are not rushed in beginning the exam. 6. Make notes before beginning to write. This applies to examinations that contain essay questions. For questions that demand long answers, make a quick outline of the content of Student Handbook 36

the answer on any left-hand page of the exam booklet. This provides a quick reference from which to build the full response. 7. Quickly scan the exam before beginning. Get a general idea of the task ahead in order to budget time. Identify the value of each question in case time runs short and you have to decide where to best focus your efforts. Mark challenging questions which may need additional thought and concentration to complete. Keep a watch on your desk, to help you pace yourself and not spend too much time on one question. 8. Answer easiest questions first. This especially applies to exams containing multiple choice, true and false, matching and short answer questions. Answer all questions unless there is a penalty for providing incorrect answers. 9. Focus on the exam itself. Do not focus on how you're doing. Some anxiety is natural, and may even help you to perform well. But too much anxiety obviously interferes with performance. Studies show that as many as one in five university students experiences exam anxiety to the extent that grades suffer. 10. Write in a simple straight-forward format. Part-time, Post RN, Distance Program APPENDIX A General Information for Proctors Distance Nursing Programs CRITERIA: Proctors must be in an administrative position and be affiliated with an institution or organization (i.e., college, university, hospital or other health care organization). Person may not be a family relative of the student. All exams must be administered in a health or educational institution. It is strictly forbidden for exams to be written in a private home or other dwelling. EXAM PROCTORING INSTRUCTIONS: Proctors are responsible for arranging a suitable location to hold the exam and for receiving, supervising and returning student examinations (in the envelope provided) to the Distance Nursing Program Office. Students are not permitted to return the exam package under any circumstances. Academic integrity and university policy require that proctors provide constant direct supervision during midterm/final exams, unless the student is writing alone. In the case of a student writing alone, intermittent supervision is required. The following conditions apply to all examinations: PROCTORS MUST ENSURE: 1. Students must leave all related course materials outside the exam room, or place in a separate area of the exam room so as not to have access to these materials at any point during the examination. Please ask the student(s) to leave coats, books, briefcases, etc. outside in a secure area away from the writing area. 2. Students must be adequately seated so that sufficient space is left between students to prevent any possibility of information exchange, either overtly or covertly. 3. All exam materials are to be collected including any SCRAP PAPER USED FOR NOTE TAKING and returned to the Program Office on the next business day after the exam(s) has(have) been written, unless alternate arrangements have been made with the Program Office. In the event the student does not write, please return the entire examination package to the Program Office. 4. EXAMINATIONS ARE NOT TO BE PHOTOCOPIED UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE. 5. It is strictly forbidden to permit students to view any part of the examination prior to writing the exam. 6. If the student has forgotten their ID number, they can either (a) call the Program office to obtain this information (1-800-588-2246 or 1-800-565-4371), or (b) return the exam bearing their name and a staff member in the Program Office will enter their ID number on the exam.
