Introduction This guide is for students coming from a different educational system to Spain s and for foreign students who are not residents in Spain, who want to enroll in any of Universidad Europea s Undergraduate, Graduate, Doctoral, and Advanced Career and Technical Education programs. All of these students are referred to as international students. The guide describes the simple steps to follow, from initial application through to enrollment, for students coming from education systems outside Spain. The procedure for applying to university in Spain, a member state of the European Union (EU), is different for students from the education systems of other member states (and countries which have reciprocal agreements with Spain) and for students from other education systems. The Prepare your trip to Spain section talks about the Student Card and the Foreign Resident Identity Number (NIE), which are applicable to all non-spanish students, while visas are required only for students who are not nationals or residents of European Union states, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland or Liechtenstein. This section also includes information on support services to help you prepare to travel to Spain. The Other useful information section tells you about the services Universidad Europea offers international students, such as language courses, as well as addresses you may need to know. The higher education system in Spain This diagram gives an overview of the Spanish higher education system: Baccalaureate or equivalent ADVANCED CAREER AND TECHNICAL EDUCATION (ACTE) 1-2 years 180-240 ECTS BACHELOR S DEGREE (3-4 years) (*) (*) Some Bachelor s Degrees are longer, including Pharmacy, Dentistry and Medicine) MASTER S DEGREE (60-120 ECTS) (1-2 years) PhD Programs 3-4 years Doctoral Dissertation Professional careers Finally, the Appendices include information on how to get your educational qualifications officially recognized, and on the Universidad Europea admissions procedure. As part of our personalized services for students, we provide addresses and phone numbers to help you with any questions you may have relating to this guide and its contents. Official qualifications and the European Higher Education Area These are qualifications compliant with the European Higher Education Area (EHEA). They consist of three cycles: Bachelor, Master and Doctorate. Both Bachelor s Degrees and Master s Degrees relate to the following areas of study: Arts and Humanities Science Health Sciences Social Sciences and Law Engineering and Architecture ECTS credits ECTS credits (European Credit Transfer System) are the standard for all universities in the European Higher Education Area to ensure consistency across the different European education systems. ECTS credits are based on the student s own work in all the activities involved in the learning process (classroom hours, study hours, assignments, projects and internships). What is a Bachelor s Degree? Bachelor s Degrees (Grado) replace the Spanish qualifications Diplomado and Licenciado. With some exceptions, most involve 180-240 ECTS credits over three or four academic years (including the Graduation Project). Some degrees such as Pharmacy, Medicine and Dentistry take longer. 4 5
Most Universidad Europea degrees are taught in three terms or trimesters per year (except for Medicine and Dentistry). This makes our courses more flexible and easier to adapt to the real needs of our students. Universidad Europea offers Bachelor s Degrees and Double Degrees in Spanish, English and in a bilingual format. They can be classroom based, semi-classroom based or 100% online. The Bachelor s degree is structured as follows: Basic core requirements (60 ECTS credits minimum) Degree requirements Required electives Internships (60 ECTS credits maximum) Graduation Project (6 to 30 ECTS credits) Recognition of university activities (6 ECTS credits maximum). Students must enroll for a minimum of nine credits and a maximum of 72 credits in each academic year. What is a Graduate Degree? Article 34.1 of Spain s University Act (Organic Law 6/2001, of 21 December) rules that Universities are authorized to provide teaching leading to the award of official qualifications valid throughout Spain, and teaching leading to the award of other qualifications. Master s Degree programs provide more specialized academic and professional training and research, and are structured into programs leading to the award of a Master s Degree. The University offers both certifying and specializing Master s Degree programs. All of them are officially recognized within the European Higher Education Area. Certifying Master s Degrees are advanced specialist qualifications enabling holders to perform professional activities that are regulated in Spain, and whose curriculum meets the conditions set by the Government for the profession in question. Specializing Master s Degrees are advanced educational qualifications which may be specialized or multidisciplinary, designed for academic or professional specialization or research in fields which do not require qualifications for professional activities that are regulated in Spain. Specializing Master s Degree programs may be Ordinary or Extended, according to students particular educational needs such as part-time study, or to suit the type of degree or any other circumstances the University may determine. Ordinary Master s Degrees: 60 ECTS credits. These courses take about one year. Extended Master s Degrees: 60 ECTS credits. These courses may take up to two consecutive years. Their scheduling is determined by the University (minimum 30 ECTS per academic year). In addition to these official qualifications, the University also offers its own qualifications (private Master s Degrees or Certificate courses). These courses are educational programs designed to develop skills, abilities, aptitudes, competencies and expertise, either as introductions to a professional field or for updating, improving or specializing professional or academic skills. What is a PhD? PhD or doctoral programs constitute access to what is known as the Third Cycle of official university studies, and form part of the European Higher Education Area (EHEA) and the European Research Area (ERA). Through the PhD programs, students, known as doctoral candidates, acquire the expertise and skills they need to become researchers capable of conducting high quality research projects. The PhD programs are designed to develop the different educational aspects of the doctoral candidates and establish the procedures and lines of research for conducting the research projects which will be their dissertation. Through its School of Doctoral Studies and Research, Universidad Europea de Madrid offers a range of PhD programs leading to the accredited Doctor s degree. Once admitted to their doctoral program, all doctoral candidates are given specific training and support. After enrollment, they are assigned a dissertation director and an advisor/mentor, both of whom will guide them throughout their research work during the course of the PhD program, advising them on how to prepare and write their dissertation. Before embarking on the research project itself, doctoral candidates must complete a 12-credit Training Module on scientific research methodology and procedures in the field of their chosen PhD program. These complementary training is delivered online via the Universidad Europea Campus Virtual, and is structured in four blocks: Scientific Methodology and Theory of Knowledge (3 ECTS) Information Processing (3 ECTS) Resources Associated with Research Activity (3 ECTS) Practicum (3 ECTS) During the admission process the student s academic record is studied and authenticated. This study will determine how many ECTS credits the future doctoral candidate must take of the total 12 of the Training Module. After completing the Training Module, doctoral candidates begin their research, at the end of which they will defend their dissertation before a panel. What is Advanced Career and Technical Education (ACTE)? Advanced Career and Technical Education (ACTE) programs are official higher education programs organized within the educational system that enable people to exercise a qualified profession in different professional categories. They are mainly designed for students who hold recognized high school qualifications (equivalent to the Spanish baccalaureate) and want intensive training in a profession leading to a higher education qualification, enabling them to enter the job market after two years, or simply as an alternative path towards a Bachelor s Degree program, with an advantageous course recognition plan. 6 7
The main objective of these advanced programs is for students to acquire the aptitudes that will allow them to adapt to present and future employment situations, assuming coordination, planning and assessment responsibilities. As well as the technical skills needed for their profession, this qualification enables students to assume leadership responsibilities and gives them an overall vision of the system in which they work. 1.UNIVERSIDAD EUROPEA ADMISSION PROCEDURES PERSONALIZED GUIDANCE (Contact our advisors) 1.UNIVERSIDAD EUROPEA ADMISSION PROCEDURES Depending on your selected study program and Campus, you have probably already had your personal advising session. In this case (periods over six months), the visa issued by the Embassy or Consulate would be for 90 days, which can be extended to cover the total period required by the program once in Spain, as explained below in relation to the Foreign Resident Identification Number (NIE). It is important to remember that a 180-day visa cannot be renewed in Spain, so you would have to request a new visa if you want to stay in Spain for longer. To do this, international students must go to a Spanish Embassy or Consulate abroad, but not necessarily in their country of origin. Students must request their visa in person from the Spanish Consulate or Embassy. You can find the address of the Spanish Consulate or Embassy in your country of origin at www.maec.es, the website of Spain s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation. The Embassy or Consulate staff will tell you what documents you need in order to obtain the visa. Although it usually takes around four to six weeks to get a visa, we recommend starting the process at least two months before the chosen program starts, so that international students can start their classes on time. To help with the process, here is a list of the requirements and documentation you need to obtain a visa: A passport valid for at least six months (provided by the student). 2. PREPARE YOUR TRIP TO SPAIN University students Having completed studies leading to the university qualification. Photocopy of the certificate, or Official academic certificate stating they have requested and paid the fees to obtain the official qualification, including classifications in subjects and the average grade of the academic record. Students taking the Entrance Exam for Advanced Career and Technical Education programs or the University Entrance Exam for students over 25. Having passed the corresponding entrance exam. Official certification of having passed the entrance exam giving access to training leading to the requested studies, or Official certification of having passed the University Entrance Exam for students over 25. *Students must provide a countersigned photocopy or the original document for the Center. If you studied the Baccalaureate at a private school, you must provide the certificate of the Public School to which that center belongs. This section includes students who have passed the Experimental Baccalaureate. A document indicating that the student has enough money to live on (provided by the student). A letter of admission to the education institution (provided by Universidad Europea de Madrid, Valencia or Canarias, as applicable [*]) A Criminal Record Certificate (provided by the student). Private medical insurance with repatriation coverage (provided and paid for by the student) (the university recommends taking out an insurance policy [**]). The cost of the medical insurance will be assumed by the student. You can follow the link below to take out insurance with AON Seguros, or if you prefer, use an insurance company of your choice: www.aonstudentinsurance.com 32 33
For programs which include staying in a country outside Europe, international students and their insurance companies should consider whether they need to take out another insurance policy to cover these stays. This insurance can be taken out by any student applying for a place on any program at Universidad Europea de Madrid/Valencia/Canarias, or the European Career College of Madrid. In the case of students from any Member State of the European Union, we suggest obtaining the European Health Insurance Card in their country of origin. The University is available at any time to help international students resolve any issue which may arise during the process of obtaining their visa. International students in Madrid International students who are not residents or nationals of a European Union country should go to: Avda. de los Poblados, s/n (28047 Madrid). Metro station: Aluche. International students in the Canary Islands International students who are residents or nationals of a European Union country should go to: Avenida Padre Piquer, 18 (28024 Madrid). Metro station: Campamento (LEGAL NOTICE: Students should note that the company AON Risk Solutions AON Affinity offers the option of taking out private medical insurance. If students take out insurance policies with the company AON Risk Solutions AON Affinity, the University and its Madrid, Valencia and Canary Islands centers accept no liability for any claims arising as a consequence of this contract between the student and the insurance company.) (*) LETTER OF ADMISSION TO THE EDUCATION INSTITUTION So that students can manage their visa application process, once they have paid their Place Reservation and Enrollment fees, Universidad Europea provides them with a Letter of Admission to their chosen program, specifying its name, the start and end dates, the number of hours, and any other details about the program. (**) PRIVATE MEDICAL INSURANCE Medical insurance is mandatory for all international students who require visas in order to study in Spain (i.e., students who are not residents in or nationals of European Union Member States, Norway, Iceland or Liechtenstein). Not being insured means running the risk of not receiving the appropriate health care. 2.2. IN SPAIN Universidad Europea reminds students that the visa issued by Spain allows them to travel freely in all the countries within the Schengen Area. The visa is not valid outside this area. Student Card / Foreign Resident Identity Number (NIE) The NIE is the number used to identify foreign residents in Spain. This number is unique and personal. - International students who are residents or nationals of a European Union country can get a NIE number by registering with the Registry of EU Nationals. - For international students from countries outside the European Union, the NIE number is included in the Student Card. Once in Spain, international students with visas should request a Foreign Resident Identity Number (NIE), which will serve as a residence permit for students with 90-day visas who have to extend their legal stay in Spain. The Student Card will replace the student visa issued in the country of origin, enabling holders to travel in Schengen Area countries without needing a visa, and providing a legal basis for their stay in Spain. Students should apply for the card within one month of arriving in Spain, and before their visa expires. The card includes a Foreign Resident Identity Number (NIE). Until you have the card, we advise international students not to leave Spain, as they may have difficulties getting back in. To request the NIE (registering with the Registry of EU Nationals) or the Student Card, go to: International students who are not residents or nationals of a European Union country should go to: C/ La Marina, 20-38071 Santa Cruz de Tenerife International students who are residents or nationals of a European Union country should go to: C/ José del Campo Llarena, 3-38400 Puerto de la Cruz International students in Valencia International students who are not residents or nationals of a European Union country should go to: Patraix Police Station - C/ Dels Gremis, 6 (46014 Valencia). International students who are residents or nationals of a European Union country should go to: Bailén Police Station - C/ Bailén, 9 (46007 Valencia). Documentation and procedure: Students should bring their passport, plus a copy of it. Students who are not residents or nationals of a European Union country must also bring their visa to these offices, where they can request an appointment to have their fingerprints taken and to pay the official fee. International students who are residents or nationals of a European Union country will immediately be issued with a registration certificate showing the name, nationality and address of the registered person, their foreign resident identity number (NIE), and the date of registration. International students who are not residents or nationals of a European Union country will immediately be given an appointment and told what documents to bring. For information purposes, these are usually documents which prove that the student: Meets all requirements for entering and remaining in Spain, including a visa, granted specifically for studying at any officially recognized public or private institution (passport and visa). Has been accepted, according to normal regulations, to any officially recognized public or private education or scientific institution in order to carry out unpaid study, training or research tasks, indicating a schedule requiring the student s attendance for three months or more, including the approved study, research or training plan (letter of admission). 34 35
Has sufficient guaranteed means to pay for their studies, living expenses and travel to their country of origin for themselves and their family members, if applicable.. The student has guaranteed health care through a medical insurance policy with unlimited coverage nationwide (medical insurance). Other documents which are often requested include: Municipal registration certificate (empadronamiento). Two (2) passport sized photos (3 x 4 cm) The period of permission to stay may be limited to the length of the study, research or training program. If the course is more than 12 months long, the card can be renewed annually. B. 6. APPENDICES A) LEGALIZATION OF QUALIFICATIONS The valid types of legalization are the processes compliant with: Hague Convention (apostille) Andrés Bello Convention Diplomatic channels. Hague Convention (apostille) In countries which have signed the Hague Convention, the competent authorities simply need to issue a Hague Apostille: Antigua and Barbuda Argentina Armenia Azerbaijan Australia Bahamas Barbados Belarus Belize Bosnia-Herzegovina Botswana Brunei Darussalam China Cyprus Colombia South Korea Croatia Dominica Ecuador El Salvador United States of America Fiji Georgia Granada Honduras Hong Kong India Iceland Cook Islands Israel Japan Kazakhstan Lesotho Liberia Macao Macedonia Malawi Marshall Islands Mauritius Mexico Moldova Namibia Niue Norway New Zealand Panama Peru Russian Federation Samoa St. Kitts and Nevis San Marino Saint Vincent and the Grenadines St. Lucia Serbia Seychelles South Africa Switzerland Suriname Swaziland Tonga Trinidad and Tobago Turkey Venezuela. (*) (*) You can see an updated list of these countries at: www.hcch.net Andrés Bello Convention Countries which have signed the Andrés Bello Convention, include: Bolivia, Colombia, Cuba, Chile, Ecuador, Panama, Paraguay, Peru and Venezuela. 6. APPENDICES Qualifications must be legalized through diplomatic channels. To do this, they must be presented at the following offices: the Ministry of Education of the country of origin, for degrees and study certificates; the relevant Ministry for birth and nationality certificates; the Ministry Foreign Affairs of the country where the documents were issued; Spain s diplomatic mission or Consulate in the country.. Note: Countries which have signed both conventions (the Hague Convention and the Andrés Bello Convention) may opt for either form of legalization, although the Hague Convention is recommended because it is simpler. Legalization through diplomatic channels Countries which do not appear in either of the above lists must legalize their qualifications through diplomatic channels, which usually requires: 54 55
Recognition, by the Authorities of the Ministry of Education of the country of origin, of the signatures that appear on the original document, in the case of documents accrediting studies; and for certificates accrediting birth, nationality, or other circumstances, recognition by the authorities of the relevant Department of the country of origin of the signatures that appear on the original document. The legalization, by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the country of origin, of the recognition of the above cases. Recognition of the signature of the above legalization by the Spanish Consulate in the country of origin. The new system of diplomatic legalization of documents introduced in Spain means there is no need for the signature of the authority or civil servant in the Spanish Consulate to be recognized by the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Sección de Legalizaciones - c/ Juan de Mena, n.º 4 - CP 28014 Madrid - Tel.: 91 3791655). This recognition has been replaced by a transparent sticker which protects the last signature in the chain, that of the civil servant in the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation (the Spanish Consulate in the country of origin of the document) All the documents issued by the Consular Services of a foreign country in Spain must be legalized by the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation.
