SHIPMAN 59 THE CONCEPT THE CREATORS After building the world s largest carbon sailboat fleet, which has sailed hundreds of thousands of miles in the past decade, Shipman Carbon Yachts has accumulated immense know-how in carbon-epoxy build technology, hydrodynamics and ease of handling. The research in the hydrodynamics area and sail-handling technology allowed us to create a new Shipman which delivers new levels of comfort, safety, performance and ease of handling - especially in shorthanded situations. Shipman s mother company, Seaway, developed a new hybrid and solar technology which was used with enormous success in the Greenline Hybrid range of boats of which over 300 have been delivered to date. This created a base for further development of this technology for Shipman. Hybrid means diesel-electric propulsion with a lithium battery, which enables zero-emission operation in marinas, ports and anchorages. The important amount of energy stored gives 220/1 V AC power at any time, increasing the level of convenience and comfort aboard. This feature also eliminates the use of a generator during night-time. The electric drive motor serves also as the generator, eliminating the complexity and weight of a second diesel engine. The design of this unique yacht is a common effort of three design houses: J&J Design, Doug Peterson and Guillaume Verdier. This multi-national, multi-cultural and complementary design team has a long history of working together: J&J design worked on many projects with Doug since 1992 and Guillaume was heavily involved in the Shipman designs since 2004. This design team also worked together on extensive tank testing programs. J&J Design, brothers Jernej and Japec Jakopin, have designed the current range of Shipman Carbon Yachts and are the world leaders in production sailboat design. More than 60,000 boats have been built to their 300 designs in the past 30 years by 48 boatbuilders from 20 countries, winning over 60 Boat of the Year and design awards. They continuously prove to be at the forefront of today s marine design, engineering and production. Doug Peterson rrevolutionised the IOR racing scene in 1973 and since then designed a range of world-championships winning racing yachts. From 1990 he was heavily involved with America s cup, winning this title twice, and with one place in the finals. Today he is considered the guru of sailing yacht hydrodynamics. Guillaume Verdier is, arguably, the most brilliant naval architect of the new French school. His designs clearly dominate the monohull single-handed ocean racing scene. The most recent single-handed round the world race finished in January 2013, with Guillaume s designs in the top four positions. They strongly felt that the time is ripe for a new era in ocean cruising - for the Shipman 59.
