After all, it was only in 2006 when she departed Finland, but Pink Gin has lived a busy and interesting life since then, covering more than 100,000 miles of sailing. That's the equivalent of about four circumnavigations of the globe. In 2010 she had been to Brazil and taken in the Football World Cup in South Africa, for example, before making the journey north to Jakobstad. When you looked under the skin of Pink Gin, the inevitable signs of wear became more obvious. The main engine was due for a scheduled overhaul, and one of the air conditioning compressors needed to be replaced. The rig had lost some of its original gloss and shine due to UV deterioration, and while a repolish might have sufficed, it was decided that it would be better to give the rig a fresh coat of paint. At the same time we upgraded the nitronic steel rigging with carbon composite rigging from Future Fibres, saving about 70 per cent of the weight of the original rigging. The change of rigging is one example of how an extensive refit offers the opportunity to upgrade to the latest technology. Although composite rigging was available in 2006 at the time of Pink Gin's launch, it was still in the early days of proving itself as reliable technology in the grand prix race market. Five years down the line, and composite rigging is becoming a mainstream replacement for rod rigging in superyachts. Reducing the weight of the rigging could have resulted in a reduction of bulb weight too, although it was decided to keep the original keel configuration and take the benefit of the added stiffness and stability. The yacht's interior was stripped bare, with floorboards and doors taken off for full servicing before being replaced. The teak deck was ground back and brought back to look as good as new, and the new paint work on the hull has returned Pink Gin to pristine condition. The main saloon and owner's cabin were refurbished with new fabrics. The electronics package and monitoring system have been updated to the latest versions, and even some of the bathrooms have been refurbished, with some of the corean handwashing basins exchanged for marble. When Pink Gin departed Jakobstad for the second time in her life, she looked better than new. We look forward to seeing her again in years to come. 14 NEWSLETTER SEPTEMBER 2011

15 Recently launched Baltic 48DP Banzai II Launched in 1986, the Doug Peterson 48-footer Banzai II found herself in a big storm and struck some rocks, causing considerable damage to the mid-sections of the boat. Banzai II was repaired soon after, but it was by no means a perfect job, just sufficient to keep the boat sailing safely. Indeed the yacht has continued to sail very successfully for the past quarter-century but eventually she returned to Finland for a full refit. We found that the keel structure had suffered damage from that grounding incident all those years ago, and we have restored the structure of the hull and keel to their original and intended condition. We also carried out extensive work on the topsides, taking the dark blue paint back to the structural laminate and then fairing and respraying the hull. With the advances in paint technology over the past 25 years, the gelcoat finish has been replaced with Awlgrip paint, and so Banzai II looks better now than when she was launched all those years ago.
