3. Opening a Publication To open a publication, use the same process followed in most programs, simply pull down the (a) menu to (b) to find the desired document. 4. Viewing a Publication a. The size of the publication as viewed on the monitor can be changed by pulling down the View menu to the desired size. b. The two views that will be used the most are: (b) (shortcut: Control + ) (c) (shortcut: Control + ) c. Other useful views are Entire Pasteboard, which displays all objects being stored on the pasteboard, and the 200% size (short cut: Control + 2 ) d. Moving around in the publication is fairly simple. You can use the scroll bars or simply hold down the Alt key and drag with the mouse or use the Hand tool in the toolbox. e. To zoom in or out, hold down the + keys and right click with the mouse in the target area. Macintosh: hold down the Command and Option Keys together and click in the target area. f. To zoom in on a desired area, simply click on the Zoom tool and define the target area by lassoing it with the mouse. The target area will then fill the screen. (Target Area) g. Page Shortcut: Use the Page Up and Page Down keys to move through the publication. 5. Using Help a. To bring up PageMaker Help: Windows 95: Pull down the Help menu to Help Topics. To enter text, select the Text Tool from the toolbox, The cursor will change to an I-beam. Click at the desired location inside the margins and enter text. b. You can select text with the Text Tool by dragging over the desired text. You can quickly select certain story elements with the text tool: n To select a, double click on it. n To select a, triple click in it. n To select an entire story, click in the story and pull down the Edit menu to Select All. 9. Formatting Text a. Text can be formatted in three ways: 1. Select Text. Pull down the menu to a desired characteristic. 2. Select text. Enter text as if using word-processing software. While the editor will display some actual styles (such as bold or underline), it will not show actual font, size, or special formatting. The editor does have a spell checker and a find-and-replace feature. 11. Setting the Measuring System a. You can set PageMaker to use any number of measuring systems. The three most popular are 1) inches, 2) picas, and 3) points. Many typesetters and designers prefer a system of picas and points since it uses the same measurements for text and graphics. 72 points = 1 inch The notation for picas and points in PageMaker is: 12 points = 1 pica [# of picas] p [# of points] 6 picas = 1 inch e.g. 1/2 inch would be 3 picas or 3p 3/4 inch would be 4 picas 6 points or 4p6 To change the default measurements, make the changes when no publications are open. b. To change the preferences, pull down the File menu to then. 12. Non-printing Guides a. guides help align text and graphics on the page. They are accessed by clicking and holding on one of the rulers and dragging to the desired position on the page. b. guides set the margins for each column. A single column layout can be created by clicking on the column guide on the left or right (defaults to the same as the page margins) and dragging them into position. c. Multiple column layouts can be created by pulling down the menu to and entering the desired number of columns. d. Alignment of objects to guides is easier when you select from the View menu. e. Lock the guides into place by selecting from the View menu. f. You can hide the guides or show them again by toggling the Show (Hide) Guides under the View menu. 13. Working with Text Blocks a. Text blocks can be moved by clicking and dragging with the tool. b. To resize the text blocks, click and drag a handle (dot) on one of the four corners. c. Windowshade handles: n (Beginning or end) no more text. n Down arrow means more text. n means more text (before or after) the selected text. (Threaded) Office of Information Technology 5
14. Working with Frames (see toolbox on page 1.) a. Frames are similar to the PageMaker drawing tools, in that they can take on any shape and can be filled with a fill or stroke. Frames can also contain or and can be threaded together, much as text boxes can. b. The frame appears in the chosen shape with an x in it. The x will not print and only appears when the frame is. c. Frames, unlike text boxes, can be added to a document as, allowing you to create the basic layout structure of a document before placing the text or graphics. 15. Printing with PageMaker a. To print a PageMaker document, pull down the File menu to Print and select the desired printing options. Then click on the Print button or strike the Enter key. 16. Using Graphics a. PageMaker 6.5 will use images saved as PICT, Bit Mapped, EPS, TIFF, or GIF. b. Not all formats will produce equal results. n For most images, PICT or EPS (encapsulated post script) will work nicely. n is the choice for grayscale or color photographs. n Bit Mapped will often print out with jagged edges. c. To bring in a graphic file, select the pointer tool and pull down the File menu to. The cursor will change to an angle with an icon in it like this:. Move the cursor to the desired position and click. d. If you must resize the image, select the pointer tool and click the graphic. Then drag one of the (little dots) until the image is the desired size. NOTE: To maintain the image s proportions, hold down the key while resizing. e. To crop an image, select the cropping tool ( ) from the toolbox, drag one of the handles to obtain the desired size. To scroll inside the cropped area, click and hold on the graphic with the cropping tool selected and drag. 17. Placing Text a. Text is placed,, or -. 18. PageMaker s Built-in Drawing Tools a. The rectangle, ellipsis (oval), polygon, line and constrained line tool all work similarly. Select the tool, move the cursor to the desired place, then click and drag to create the size. b. To change the line size and/or the fill of the image, pull down the menu to and make the desired adjustments. c. 19. Using the Control Palette a. The control palette is very useful for page layout tasks. It will look different depending on which tool is selected and which object is selected. b. To apply color to an object created with the drawing tools, select the object with the Pointer tool and pull down the Window menu to. b. To make the fill and line color the same, click the icon for both in the Colors window, then select the color and the percent of color. e.
