Blue&Me Live life while you drive Introduction Blue&Me is an innovative in-car system that allows you to use your Bluetooth mobile phone and to listen to your music while you drive. Blue&Me can be controlled either by voice or by the buttons on the steering wheel, which means that your attention is not diverted from driving and the road. What it consists of: Controls on the steering wheel Hands-free kit with Bluetooth technology High-level voice recognition Compatibility with most Bluetooth mobile phones USB port Compatibility with most media players with a USB connection What you can do: Make and receive phone calls: mobile phones registered with the car connect automatically when you get in. See the names and numbers in your phonebook on the display of the instrument panel. Use voice controls to call a name or number from the phone book without taking your hands off the steering wheel. Listen to digital music files on a device with a USB connection. You can choose the categories ( Artist, Album, etc.) by using voice control, and you can scroll through the list of songs shown on the display of the instrument panel by using the steering wheel controls. Plan a route and get directions on-screen or verbally through the car speakers.

Hardware Voice command Steering wheel controls Steering wheel controls USB connection Instrument display USB connection If you prefer to use buttons to control the system, there are eight of them on the steering wheel in Blue&Me equipped cars. Their functionality is detailed later in this document. This is a standard USB port and enables you to connect an MP3 music player to the car. The USB port also provides power to the device, so it can charge its internal batteries while the device is connected and the ignition is on. Instrument display The digital display in the instrument panel is used by Blue&Me to show the system options and status. A series of symbols and information is displayed, including incoming calls, new text message, the fact that a phone is connected, playlist and music track information. Voice command Voice command can be used for the hands-free phone system and to control the music played by the MP3 player connected via the USB port. Voice commands can be given by the driver, who does not need to change his/her normal driving position to be heard by the system, as the microphone is appropriately located for this purpose. The hands-free phone system recognises and responds to a pre-set list of voice commands. The list of available voice commands depends on the Blue&Me system level; you can hear a list of possible commands by saying Help. Blue&Me also recognises personalised versions of voice commands like the name of a contact in your phonebook. No voice training is required for using voice commands with this system. To issue a voice command to the system, you simply press the steering wheel button and wait for the tone indicating that voice recognition is active. You then speak the command in your natural voice at a moderate pace. When the system recognises the command, it will acknowledge your command by voicing a response and acting on it. The car s audio system (radio and CD/MP3 player) cannot be controlled using voice commands.

Phone functionality Bluetooth The basic characteristic of this hands-free kit is voice recognition with Bluetooth wireless technology, which enables you to make and receive calls safely using either voice commands or buttons on the steering wheel. This means you need never take your eyes off the road or remove your hands from the steering wheel, as required by current legislation. Bluetooth wireless technology enables wireless connection between your mobile phone and the hands-free kit installed on your car. To use the hands-free kit, you need a Bluetooth wireless technology-enabled mobile phone. The hands-free kit enables you to interact vocally with your mobile phone while driving, even if your mobile device does not feature this capability. You can also interact with your mobile phone by using the steering wheel controls and the instrument panel multi-function display. Receiving calls When your mobile phone is connected to the car and you receive an incoming call, your radio/cd will be muted and the ring tone will be produced through the car s speakers. You can answer simply by pressing the button on the steering wheel. The volume of the speakers can be adjusted via either the buttons on the steering wheel, or those on the radio. Making calls You can make an outgoing call in a number of ways. If you have copied your phonebook into the car, you can view it and select one of the names/numbers by using the buttons on the steering wheel. You can perform the same process by voice control. You can also verbally dial a number using the voice commands, or dial a number using the keypad on your mobile phone. You can choose to call recently dialled numbers, received calls, missed calls or the sender of a recently received SMS message. Text messages If your phone supports text message reading (it needs to be able to transfer text messages via Bluetooth ) and you receive a new message, you will hear a tone and see a visual message on the car s instrument panel display (you can choose the type of alert used). You will be asked whether you wish the system to read out your message, and you can accept or decline by using either the buttons or voice commands. The system can store up to 20 recently received messages. Only messages received while the phone is connected to the car can be stored and read, not old messages saved in the mobile phone s memory. It also has intelligent text recognition that allows it to interpret and convert to speech commonly used abbreviations such as c u l8r and r u up 4 2nite. Phonebook The phonebook download function from the mobile phone to the vehicle system is one of the most powerful features of Blue&Me. It enables the driver to use the digital instrument display instead of the screen on the phone. Blue&Me can store up to 1,000 contacts for every single one of up to five different user profiles. You can then scroll through the names and numbers on the dashboard, or call them using voice control by saying their name.

MP3 music player functionality Compatibility Most digital music file formats are recognised by Blue&Me, including WMA, MP3, WAV, AAC, MP4 and files with digital rights (DRM). Most media players and USB memory sticks will work with the system. We don't recommend using devices with a password function enabled, as this can cause problems. Managing the media library If you re using Blue&Me with software before version 5.5, it will build a media library when a device is connected to the USB port. It only supports one media library. Blue&Me does not download music onto the car; it builds a media library of the music held on the USB device. You can play in continuous or random mode, or search by Artist, Album or Genre. It can also charge your device while it s plugged into the USB port. Navigational functionality Blue&Me Instant Nav Blue&Me Instant Nav combines a satellite navigator, a dual tuner radio and a CD/MP3 player in one device, integrated into the dashboard. Featuring colour display, GPS and voice control and with the addition of TMC (Traffic Message Channel), it will even alert you about congestion or problems on your journey and suggest an alternative route to your destination. Blue&Me Map Designed by the Fiat Style Centre, Blue&Me Map is a colour touchscreen that you can carry from car to car. It works in a similar way to Blue&Me Instant Nav, but it is a portable device that slots straight onto your dashboard without the need for cables or a windscreen mount. Music on ipods and iphones New generation ipods and iphones are also compatible with Blue&Me. To play music files without converting them to MP3 format, you just need a special adaptor that s available from fiat.co.uk/accessories or from your local Fiat dealer. It converts the music files on your ipod or iphone so they can be played through the system. Older generation ipods are also compatible with Blue&Me, but the music must be in MP3 format.

eco:drive functionality What it is eco:drive is an easy-to-use computer application based on Blue&Me technology that helps improve how efficiently you drive. It analyses your driving style and gives tips on how to use less fuel, save money and reduce your CO2 emissions. Using eco:drive To start using eco:drive, you need to download a free computer application from our website, fiat.co.uk/ecodrive. The next time you go for a drive, just plug a USB stick into your car port and it will automatically store your driving information. It can even do this while you re using other Blue&Me functions, like playing music or making a call. Then simply connect the USB stick to your computer and all the stored information will be analysed by the eco:drive software on your computer. You ll be provided with an eco:index, which is a score based on your acceleration, deceleration, gear changes and speed. You can then follow step-by-step tutorials based on your own journeys to help improve your driving, reduce your CO2 emissions and fuel consumption and calculate how much money you ve saved. Updates Updating Blue&Me If your phone or music player already works correctly with Blue&Me or you have a new car with version 5.5 already installed, you don t need an update. Alternatively, you can update to version 5.5 quickly and easily at fiat.co.uk/blueandme. Blue&Me Map When you update to the latest software, you can also choose to update the Blue&Me Map application to enhance the performance of your portable sat nav. At the moment, there are no updates available for Blue&Me Instant Nav. New phones, ipods and iphones If you have the latest generation phone, ipod or iphone you can download free Blue&Me version 5.5 for increased compatibility at fiat.co.uk/blueandme. Language You can change the language used by the system to give commands, and the language the system recognises commands in, by downloading the relevant file.

Technical details Developed jointly by Microsoft and Fiat, Blue&Me uses Microsoft s Windows Mobile for Automotive telematics platform and Connected Car technology. The Windows Mobile for Automotive platform supports a broad range of automotive, communication and computering standards, including CAN bus, Bluetooth and USB. By using common protocols like ActiveSync, MTP (Media Transfer Protocol) and SyncML, the car synchronises with the address book and plays music files stored on pen drives, PDAs, Smartphones or MP3/WMA portable devices. The same applies for the Connected Car technology: common internet standards like Web Services and XML (extensible Markup Language) ensure easy, safe information exchange processes. The processor is supplied by the semiconductor division of Samsung Electronics, supplemented by a unit from programmable logic supplier Xilinx. A chipset from SiRF adds GPS functionality to the system. The GSM/GPRS radio module with integrated Bluetooth access to the SIM card of the mobile phone comes from the Siemens Communications division. Last, but not least, ScanSoft delivers the voice recognition and speech engine. On the hardware side, Microsoft and Fiat Auto jointly defined a standard reference design that is modular and cost-efficient to produce. Automotive partners are contributing to this standardised hardware platform: Magneti Marelli, the components arm of the Fiat Group, builds the devices.
