Hvordan måle bildekvalitet? li Litt mer om Fargelaboratoriet The Norwegian Colour and Visual Computing Laboratory Established at Gjøvik University College (GUC) in 2001 to serve the graphic arts industry s need for colour management In 2012 thenamechangedfrom The Norwegian Color Research Laboratory to The Norwegian Colour and Visual Computing Laboratory. Well equipped laboratory facilites Colour and spectral measurement, Colour management software, viewing booths, image acquisition and reproduction devices, etc. >200m2 Research group at Faculty of Computer Science and Media Technology at GUC 4 permanent staff members 10 temporary, visiting, and adjunct faculty 12 PhD students Fundamental and applied research within colour science and image/video processing Education Courses and projects to media bachelors and Master of Applied Computer Science International Erasmus Mundus master CIMET (Color in Informatics and Media Technology) French Norwegian master programme: 3D Multimedia Technology Upcoming: Sino Norwegian master programme: print and media technology International, national, and regional collaboration with industry and academia http://www.colourlab.no 1
The existential research question: How can we achieve consistent and high quality colour image reproduction in different media? Hvordan kan vi måle fargen i et pixel? Colorimetry International Lighting Commission CIE 1931 Standard Colorimetric Observer Determined based on color matching experiments Provides a standardized way of quantifying color CIEXYZ Foundation for consistent communication of color 3 dimensional color spaces 2
Color Difference Euclidean distance in CIELAB space E* ab Delta E A good measure of perceptual color difference Much used as color quality metric: Average E* ab =? Max E* ab =? Original Reproduction Perseptuelle bildeforskjellsmetrikker Hvor stor er forskjellen mellom disse to bildene? Inadequacy of pixel by pixel difference Reproduction 1 Original Reproduction 2 Reproduction 1 and 2 have the same average ΔE ab of 0.6 CIE ΔE ab colour difference equation is designed to quantify the colour difference for single pair of colour patches E ab 35 3

Example of HyPercept research Hyperspectral image capture and analysis of paintings Current activity in Yggdrasil project Will be continued in HyPerCept WP2.4 Collaboration with The National Museum (Oslo), Norsk Elektro Optikk AS, and C2RMF (Louvre, France) Example of HyPercept research Redesign of maps for colour blind Recent activity in master thesis project Will be continued in HyPerCept WP3.3 8
