Community-Based Education Model [ 2 P o s t B a c c a l a u r e a t e C e r t i f i c a t e i n N u r s e - M i d w i f e r y M. S. i n M i d w i f e r y ]

Distance Learning... attend school from the comfort of your own home. Philadelphia University offers two programs in Midwifery: Certificate (CNM) and Master s (MS) levels POST BACCALAUREATE CERTIFICATE IN NURSE-MIDWIFERY The 21-month certificate nursemidwifery education program (CNM) is accredited by the American College of Nurse-Midwives and is offered at a distance. The CNM program is built on a flexible, distributed (at home/anytime) curriculum that provides an innovative, interactive learning environment with accelerated options for nurse practitioners and foreign educated nurse-midwives. The Master of Science program in Midwifery (MS) provides the option to complete a master s degree entirely at a distance in one year by taking 12 additional credits. The MS program values and builds upon previous nurse-midwifery/midwifery education and practical experience. This program is available to midwives certified by the ACNM, as well as student midwives currently enrolled in ACNM-accredited educational programs. Students are eligible to enroll in both programs (CNM & MS) concurrently and complete them at essentially the same time. The CNM & MS programs are designed for interactive distance learning providing the opportunity to stay in your own community without losing the personal connections of midwifery education. Our model mimics the midwifery model of care for women: students are treated with respect as individuals through a personalized approach that encompasses all aspects of the educational process. Dynamic Educational Environment >> Our dynamic educational environment is a blend of midwifery tradition and new technologies. You can attend school from the comfort of your own home, with anytime communications available via the computer. Your clinical experience takes place in your own community, with a one-on-one midwife preceptor. Our midwifery education program was designed from the beginning for distance learning and it works! Our Method: Our 21-month full time program integrates theory and practice. There are three trimesters of both study and clinical experience completed in your home community and three on-campus sessions for intensive learning of hand skills, guest lectures by experts in midwifery and other specialties, and time to bond with classmates and faculty. Clinical experience begins in the eighth month of study. [ P o s t B a c c a l a u r e a t e C e r t i f i c a t e i n N u r s e - M i d w i f e r y M. S. i n M i d w i f e r y 3 ]

Special, Unique Qualities CERTIFICATE PROGRAM Experienced Faculty and Communication Network >> Our Faculty: Our faculty are experienced in teaching nurse-midwifery at a distance. As this type of education demands special capabilities of students and faculty, our unique Midwife Tutors are both experienced midwives and educators dedicated to working closely with you. Faculty work with small groups of students, blending the best of self-directed learning, interactive instruction, and nurturing to give you one-on-one contact even at a distance. The Midwifery Institute of Philadelphia University has developed a rich curriculum designed by experts in midwifery, adult education, and distance learning. Our clinical faculty (preceptors) are practicing nurse-midwives in your community, who will mentor you during your clinical experiences. Our Network: A distance-learning program requires a reliable, flexible and user-friendly method for communicating. Our computer-based system enables students and faculty to exchange personal messages, assignments, course materials and curriculum updates quickly and easily. Each student participates in seminar room discussions. While the computer environment in our program is intuitive and easy to use, students will need to have basic knowledge of computer skills, word processing, and Internet use. MASTER OF SCIENCE PROGRAM IN MIDWIFERY Philadelphia University, the first school in the United States to offer a Master of Science Program in Midwifery, has an exciting way for you to earn your master s degree through an innovative distancelearning program that is midwiferybased. The 21st-century midwife must be prepared for evidence-based practice, requiring increasingly sophisticated skills in the analysis of knowledge and practice of midwifery. Frequently, midwives are required to act as administrators, teachers, and advanced clinical practitioners without adequate preparation. This program facilitates professional development in these areas through innovative interactive technologies. State-of-the-art communication technology coupled with the professional expertise of an accomplished and caring faculty will maximize your educational experience. Best of all, you will remain in your own community as you work toward completing your master s degree in just 12 months. The program model focuses on graduate-level skills of inquiry and critical thinking and uses a distributive distance-learning approach where students interact asynchronously with each other and the faculty via computer. This means anytime communications from the comfort of your own home. Candidates for the program must be graduates or current students of an American College of Nurse- Midwives Accredited certificate nurse-midwifery/midwifery education program and hold a bachelor s degree from an accredited college or university. Overview of the MS Program >> The Graduate Midwifery Program consists of 36 graduate credits. The final 12 credits will be taken through Philadelphia University and will include three required courses and one elective. At Philadelphia University, we have planned the program to accommodate the work demands of your clinical practice. The program involves extensive reading and participation in online discussions and learning activities.
