Technical Data Sheet PRIMAL HG-1000 Binder Based on HYDROTECH Technology Regional Product Availability Description EMEA PRIMAL HG-1000 Binder is an acrylic hybrid binder for formulating gloss paints achieving improved application properties. It is based on Dow innovative HYDROTECH Technology. PRIMAL HG-1000 Binder uses ambient temperature cross-linking to offer improved film performance development versus conventional polymers. Its composition provides good overall film properties and durability for interior and exterior paints. Product Characteristics APEO-free* Excellent applicability, flow and leveling and open time Excellent gloss potential Good hardness development Excellent alkyd adhesion Good stain and grease resistance Good exterior durability *APEO is not intentionally added and is not knowingly introduced from another raw material. Typical Properties These properties are typical but do not constitute specifications. Properties Typical Values Appearance Milky white liquid Solids content 45.5 46.5% ph 8.0 9.0 Brookfield LV Viscosity (spindle 3, 60 rpm) < 500 mpa.s Minimum Film Formation Temperature ~28ºC Specific gravity (wet polymer) 1.05g/cm 3 Specific gravity (dry polymer) 1.12g/ cm 3 Formulation Guidelines Ambient Temperature Cross-linking Technology PRIMAL HG-1000 Binder uses ambient temperature cross-linking chemistry in a onepack system. Gloss paints formulated with PRIMAL HG-1000 Binder will oxidatively cure during and after the latex particles have coalesced to form a film with improved toughness and resistance properties. Formaldehyde or aldehyde releasing additives will adversely affect the performance of paints based on PRIMAL HG-1000 Binder and are not recommended. Page 1 of 8

Below are some guidelines to help formulators: Dispersants Traditional hydrophilic copolymers like OROTAN 1124 or hydrophobic copolymers like OROTAN 731A-ER can be used for pigment dispersion with this self cross-linking binder. These dispersants are particularly suitable for formulations from semi-gloss to high gloss paints providing excellent gloss potential, water resistance, good block resistance and adhesion. They are compatible with HEUR which are highly suggested for this type of applications. Defoamers Standard defoamers can be used with PRIMAL HG-1000 Binder. However we have seen that Byk-019 added in the grind and Byk-024 in the let-down offer excellent performance. Rheology Modifiers & Thickeners HEUR rheology modifiers are suggested for these types of applications (from semi-gloss to gloss) as they will bring excellent gloss, flow and leveling and overall performance. ACRYSOL RM-5000 Rheology Modifier or blends of ACRYSOL RM-5000 Rheology Modifier and ACRYSOL RM-8W Rheology Modifier are suitable options. Coalescents and co-solvents PRIMAL HG-1000 Binder has a low coalescent demand. We suggest starting with a coalescent level in the range of 9 to 10% calculated on binder solids which allow paints to have MFFT of 5 C or below. Our studies have shown that a level of 9% UCAR Filmer IBT/Texanol coalescent or DOWANOL DPnB Glycol Ether was suitable. Propylene glycol (PG) can be used to improve paint application properties. Extenders and opaque polymer ROPAQUE Ultra E Opaque Polymer is highly suggested in combination with PRIMAL HG- 1000 Binder in satin to semi-gloss paints to help reducing formulation costs, to improve whiteness and durability without impacting the other performance. Standard extenders like calcium carbonate, clay or talc can be used with PRIMAL HG- 1000 Binder to formulate semi-gloss to satin paints. Biocides Although standard in-can preservatives could be used by the formulators, it is always recommended to test compatibility and efficacy in small scale quantities. In-can preservatives such as ROCIMA 564 Biocide can be used. Exterior coatings based on PRIMAL HG-1000 Binder should always contain a film preservative to ensure longer algae and mould resistance. Our biocide experts suggest the use of ROCIMA 350 Biocide. Formaldehyde or aldehyde releasing additives like biocides can interact with the self cross linking mechanism present in this binder and adversely affect the performance of paints based on PRIMAL HG-1000 Binder and are not recommended.
