A1 UNIT 1 Easy Addition Facts The Essentials The easy facts build on each other. As you will see, the unit begins with the simple strategies for facts. These include plus 0 and plus 1 facts. These can be addressed fairly quickly. In addition to the visual representations of facts (number line, ten frame), we encourage you to stress the principle of commutation from the beginning. In other words, show students that 3 + 2 = 2 + 3. Showing students that you can flip over addition facts will save them a great deal of time, and it will encourage flexible thinking. Easy Addition Fact Strategy Sets Fact Strategy Example Number of sheets Page Plus 0 You just add 0 to the number. Plus 1 You just add 1 to the number. Plus 2 You just add 2 to the number. Doubles You are adding identical numbers. These are easier patterns for students to remember. A2 Easy Addition: The Plus 0 Facts This really amounts to a rule. In other words, any number plus 0 is the same number. If you need to, you can represent the plus zero strategy visually. One involves the use of a number line. The second involves a ten frame. Number Line for 4 + 0 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 A Ten Frame for 4 + 0 Demonstrating the Strategy You can use the number line to show basic plus zero facts. Count out on the number line, state the number, and then say, I m going to add 0 more. That means I don t have any more. So, 4 + 0 = 4 because I don t add any more. You can use a similar method for the ten frame. Use a number of different facts to communicate the plus one strategy. General Guidelines Students should learn these facts very quickly because they all follow a simple rule. Remember, use the first page of the facts set to talk about the strategy. Give students enough time to apply the strategy to the facts. For the remaining pages, use the mastery criterion at least 35 correct facts out of 40 in two minutes. Duplicate fact sheets if you need to in order to give students enough practice to meet the mastery criterion. Also, look over student sheets to see if particular facts are difficult for students. If so, provide even more practice on these facts.

One of the best ways to communicate this strategy is to use a ten frame. A Ten Frame for 4 + 4 Add 4 more Demonstrating the Strategy You can use the tens frame to show doubles facts. In the example above, you would count, one, two, three, four. We have 4, and now we are going to add 4 more. 5, 6, 7, 8. That gives us 8. 4 + 4 = 8. Notice the pattern. Use a number of different facts to communicate the doubles strategy. Note, a ten frame will be confusing for doubles that are greater than 5 + 5. Ten is a key way to think about addition and subtraction facts that involve numbers in the teens. As you will see, the ten frame is useful for communicating a strategy like make ten. Again, we encourage you to stress the principle of commutation. In other words, show students that 8 + 2 = 2 + 8. A69 Hard Addition: No Strategy or The Left Over Facts Only a few facts remain. You can address these facts in one of two ways. There are only a few, so you can focus on these as ones that students memorize. This simply requires repeated drill and practice. You can also show students the strategy of doubles plus 2. For example, we can think of 4 + 6 as 4 + 4 + 2. Ten frames enable students to see this, but we caution that this strategy may not work for all students. A Ten Frame for 4 + 6 Add 4 more Add 2 more Demonstrating the Strategy You can use the tens frame to show doubles plus 2 facts. In the example above, you would have students identify how many (4 in this case). We have 4, and now we are going to add 6 more. We can break 6 into 4 plus 2. I add the 4, so 4 + 4 is 8. Now I add 2 more, and that gives me 10. 4 + 6 = 10. That s the same as 4 + 4 + 2. Notice the pattern. General Guidelines Remember, use the first page of the facts set to talk about the strategy. Give students enough time to apply the strategy to the facts. For the remaining pages, use the mastery criterion at least 35 correct facts out of 40 in two minutes. Duplicate fact sheets if you need to in order to give students enough practice to meet the mastery criterion. Also, look over student sheets to see if particular facts are difficult for students. If so, provide even more practice on these facts. Also, if you use the double plus 2 strategy with your students, you will still have to have students memorize the 6 + 3 fact. It doesn t fit a strategy easily.
