Winona Lake HIstory Winona Lake, originally know as Eagle Lake, is a northern Indiana town with a rich history. The area was first home to the Potawatomi Indian tribe. The 1880 s saw a name change for the area. It became known as the resort Spring Fountain Park. By the next decade the resort had grown into a religious Chautauqua known as Winona Assembly and Summer School Association with millions of visitors during the 1890 s and early part of the 20th century. During that time the name of the lake changed from Eagle to Winona. Present day Winona continues its transformation. The last ten years have brought a renaissance. Old properties have been reclaimed and restored. A new commercial district, The Village at Winona, has been established offering Art Galleries, Restaurants, and Shops. MasterWorks, a monthlong performing arts festival is held in the summer. Art fairs, sailboat regattas, and a July 4th celebration are some of the other numerous festivals held throughout the year. Grace Schools, an integral part of town, is located in the heart of Winona Lake. Grace is a christian liberal arts college and seminary.
