Case Study: C21 solar roof tiles The Timmings family live near Woking. With three children and lots of household appliances, they use a lot of electricity. They chose solar panels since they generate free electricity and would help with their energy bills. Solarcentury recommended an installer who was local and trustworthy. They received good customer service and had a good overall experience working with them. The installer, Solstice Energy, chose C21 solar roof tiles, which integrated with the interlocking tiles already on the roof, as it was important to have a solar installation that fitted with the architecture of the house. The total size of the system was 3.7kW. They blend in well with the roof tiles and we ve had comments on how nice they look. Anita, Homeowner
Case Study: C21 solar slates The Greener Group used Solarcentury s C21 solar slates on a listed building in a conservation area. The building is a converted barn and required planning consent. Therefore consideration had to be given to the local environment and surrounding architecture. Other options were rejected by the local council for being too intrusive.. The C21 solar slates were developed to work in tandem with the existing or new build slates on a roof. This roof was in need of repair so it made sense to re-slate the roof at the same time as installing the solar panels. Solarcentury s C21e slates deliver universal compatibility and an excellent performance, providing a perfect complement to a traditional slate roof. Elliot Parkhouse Elliott, Managing Director at the Greener Group, comments: If you are re-roofing or need to maintain the look of your roof and want to integrate solar electric technology, the C21 solar electric roof slates are the perfect solution. Producing 2,500 kwh per year, the system provides a large element of the home s electrical needs, saving 1,275kg of C0 2 emissions from entering the atmosphere each year. Fast to Install C21e units are as fast to install as conventional tiles or slates. Each C21e can be carried onto the roof by one person and is easily moved into position. 2. Push-Fit Connections The C21e units connect together with simple click-fit connectors. Each C21e in the installation is connected to the next as they are laid onto the batten. 3. Standard Battens The nib of each C21e hooks onto the roof batten in exactly the same way as conventional tiles. There is no need for any flashings; the C21e interlocking tile interlocks directly with other units and roof tiles, and the C21e slates and C21e plain tiles use custom weatherproof interfaces. 4. Simple Fixings Each C21e uses simple fixings that only require standard roofing tools. When they are all installed, the leads from the C21e units at each end of the roof are passed through into the roof space, ready for the electrician to finalise the installation.
Your Questions Answered How does the system work? 2. The inverter converts solar electricity from direct current to alternating current for use in the house. 1. Sunlight hits the photovoltaic (PV) cells and is converted to clean electricity. 3. Connection to the electricity network allows any excess power to be fed back to the National Grid. 4. During the day solar electricity is used, at night electricity is imported as normal. Does it really work in the UK? Yes. The cells in the tiles & slates only require daylight to work, and will even generate energy on cloudy days. A 42 tile or slate C21e system can generate well over half of the electricity for a typical UK home 1. Does the system need batteries? No, the C21e system is connected to the national grid. At night, when the C21e systems are not generating energy, electricity is bought from the utility company in the normal way. Excess electricity generated during the day, for example when you are at work, can be sold back to the utility company. How much will I save?
