AS 4687 2007 2 PREFACE This Standard was prepared by the Standards Australia Committee CE-008, Chainlink Fabric Security Fences and Gates. The objective of this Standard is to establish minimum requirements for the construction and installation of temporary fencing and temporary hoarding, to provide protection to the public. This Standard identifies the difference between temporary mesh and wire fencing, temporary fencing with shade cloth (or material attached to the fence which can alter the fence characteristics) and a solid metal or timber hoarding.

AS 4687 2007 4 FOREWORD Temporary fencing is a self-supporting and modular system, which is interlocking and portable. The different systems vary in height and width. The panels are sheeted with a combination of synthetic material, chain link fabric and welded mesh. All temporary fence systems are supported with a base plate, block, counterweight or other fixing methods. Temporary hoarding is a self-supporting system sheeted with timber plywood, coated steel or sturdy synthetic material. The different systems vary in height and width. 5 AS 4687 2007 STANDARDS AUSTRALIA Australian Standard Temporary fencing and hoardings SECTION 1 SCOPE AND GENERAL 1.1 SCOPE This Standard sets out requirements for the construction and installation of temporary fencing and temporary hoardings. Temporary fencing and temporary hoardings are used (a) to provide a visual barrier; (b) to restrict access to unauthorized persons to worksites, events and restricted areas; (c) to contain equipment and materials; (d) to prevent operations within the area from impacting outside; and (e) to prevent materials, rubbish and debris from escaping from the worksite. NOTE: This Standard addresses all site-specific requirements (i.e., uneven ground, sloping sites, etc.) 1.2 REFERENCED DOCUMENTS The following documents are referred to in this Standard: AS 1163 Structural steel hollow sections 2423 Coated steel wire fencing products for terrestrial, aquatic and general use AS/NZS 1170 Structural design actions 1170.2 Part 2: General principles 1.3 GENERAL REQUIREMENTS Temporary fencing and temporary hoarding shall remain erect and stable at all times. If at any time the fence or hoarding system is moved or altered it shall be done so by a competent and trained installer in accordance to the specific hirer s instruction/installation manual. The design of any temporary fencing or temporary hoarding system shall take into account wind loading, impact tests and stability (see Section 4). All temporary fencing and temporary hoarding shall be erected by a competent installer in accordance to the specific hirer s instruction/installation manual. All temporary fences shall be a minimum height of 1500 mm. NOTE: Where temporary fencing and temporary hoarding is not erected on private property, permits and approval may be required. 1.4 MAINTENANCE Temporary fencing and temporary hoarding systems and all of their components shall be of a good condition and maintained regularly to prevent injury to the general public. www.standards.org.au Standards Australia
