Erecting and securing: - wall frames - wall plates - ledger plates Being struck by materials keep well clear of moving crane and materials while unloading is in progress Crush injuries keep clear of materials while lowering load make sure materials are stacked safely on level gluts Strains and sprains use correct lifting techniques get assistance when lifting heavy loads use good judgement to assess manageable loads Injury from flying debris and dust Injury from insecure wall frames wear gloves, goggles and other protective equipment ensure all guards are in place on tools and machines be aware of people working nearby ensure that erected wall frames are securely braced Electric shock check and tag power tools and cables regularly keep leads away from wet areas Injury from explosive tools use correct nails and charges in Ramset guns notify people adjacent to the work area of nail gun use keep immediate work area clear of other people Commonwealth of Australia All rights reserved Page 2

3 Wrist sprains and cuts from drill twisting. ensure drill is kept at a good working height use a work platform to avoid stretching keep drill bit square to the surface being drilled Falls from a ladder ensure that ladders are safely secured, and at a 4:1 pitch do not stand higher than the 3 rd top rung only carry out light duties, using one hand, when working from a ladder Falls from heights of over 2 metres / falls from a work platform provide fall protection for heights over 2 m ensure that work platforms comply with all WorkSafe requirements wear protective, non-slip footwear do not climb out of an elevated work platform (EWP) except at ground level wear a safety harness in boom-type EWPs Commonwealth of Australia All rights reserved Page 3

Erecting and securing: - roof trusses - scantling timber to roof - roof bracing Strains and sprains use correct lifting techniques get assistance when lifting heavy loads Injury from flying debris and dust use good judgement to assess manageable loads wear gloves, goggles and other protective equipment ensure all guards are in place on tools and machines be aware of people working nearby Electric shock check and tag power tools and cables regularly keep leads away from wet areas Falls from a height provide fall protection for heights of over 2 m ensure that all scaffolding and work platforms comply with AS/NZS 4576 or AS 6001 provide roof guard-rails around roof edges wear protective non-slip footwear do not climb out of an EWP except at ground level use a safety harness when fixing roof bracing Injuries from falling trusses make sure trusses are well secured with temporary bracing before fixing diagonal bracing and battens Commonwealth of Australia All rights reserved Page 4

Using hand and power tools Injuries from nail guns, power saws and drills make sure the safety mechanism is functioning correctly on nail guns, and never tamper with it to fire a nail never carry power tools with the trigger depressed keep hands away from the immediate work area disconnect tools from the power source before making adjustments or carrying out servicing wear hearing and eye protection do not direct compressed air at anyone check that adjustable guards are operating correctly keep a firm grip while using tools Commonwealth of Australia All rights reserved Page 5
