Volume 6 Issue 6 Published by Lee Thevenet HORSELESS CARRIAGE REPLICA NEWSLETTER A Publication dedicated to the reporting of news, events, articles, photos, items for sale, etc, having to do with replica horseless carriages. Hi everyone, Non Scheduled Publication Published when articles or info becomes available & Special Issues when necessary SPECIAL PICTORIAL ISSUE First Annual Northwest Regional HCRB Meet In Tacoma, Washington It is 10am in South Louisiana on Saturday August 30, 2014, in the middle of the Labor Day weekend. As I sit here drinking my first cup of morning coffee, listening to the rain really coming down, looking forward to hearing news from friends and Members of the Northwest Regional HCRB Group in Tacoma, Washington. After months of waiting, the Northwest HCRB Members are looking up for signs of clearing skies so they can begin setting up for the First Regional Northwest HCRB Meet to take place today at the prestigious LeMay Center grounds, home of the famed LeMay Automobile Collection. Northwest Members had been keeping constant watch to the Weather Channel this week for clearing skies. Severe rain had been predicted to take place over the Labor Day weekend in the Washington state area. This would really not be choice weather conditions for an outdoor event as a car show 1

The first pictures came by E- Mail from Member Ray Puser of the Phoenix, AZ area. Ray and his wife Tina had arrived in Tacoma on Thursday, eager to set up for the Saturday event. Member Claude Brown of the Seattle area, had dropped off a flat bed trailer at the campground on Friday for Ray to use in transporting his 1905 REO Model B replica to the LeMay grounds Arriving earlier, were Members Lyle Hegsted with his Holsman High Wheel Carriage and Earl Brown with his stretched Ford Model N Touring. The Members proudly displayed their colors with their well designed sign and decals 2

After Ray, with Tina s help, loaded their car and made their way to the LeMay grounds on Friday afternoon to set up for Saturday s show Knowing of possible rain in the forecast, Ray had purchased a 12 X 12 canopy as a precautionary measure to protect his car. Arriving at the LeMay grounds, Ray was met by other Members that were all willing to help set up Ray s canopy Here Ray is assisted by Member Lyle Hegsted & Earl Brown Early reports stated that rain showers were present on Saturday. Exhibiting a Show Must Go On attitude, the HCRB Members, covered their cars & waited to see if the rain would end and skies would clear 3

I received an E- Mail from Ray today with these pictures. The rain eventually stopped and the Members were able to show their cars The first is Earl Brown standing next to his stretched Ford Model N replica Here we have Bill Longiotti of Talent, Oregon with his 1901 CDO Replica 4

Next to Bill s CDO is Lyle Hegsted standing next to his high wheel Holsman replica Here we have Ray s wife Tina standing next to their 1905 REO Model B replica. Ray is behind the camera 5

Ray had this to say about the Meet, Despite all the rain, we all had a good time and it was good to meet and get to know the builders up here in the north. We only had four cars to show but we drew lots of attention! With all the rain we had on show day, there were still lots of attendants at the car show and a lot of people stopped by to look at our replicas. I could not find time to see any of the show as I was constantly explaining my build. Got lots of compliments on the cars We were allowed to take our cars for a tour around the show area and that was a crowd stopper. As soon as we started up the cars and paraded them around every one stopped to see them go by and all the cameras came out. A professional photographer came around and took pictures of the cars; you will have to check that out. As I was so busy explaining how I built the REO, I did not get to take many pictures It is now September 2 nd, Tuesday morning and I just received this message from Mike Chambers Mike was unable to send in his pictures sooner because of internet problems Lee Good morning Lee, Arriving at the 2014 NW Chapter HCR Meet at 7:00AM on Saturday August 30 th, I was met with the rain the weather man promised us. Earl Brown was already there with his polished up 1906 Ford model N covered up with a tarp but ready to share it and the story behind his build. Ray and Tina Puser arrived the night before with Earl and set up his 1905 REO under another tent. Ray spent his day wiping the drizzling rain off of his beautiful build and sharing his gorgeous REO with everyone. Lyle and Charlene Hegsted arrived with their 1906 Holsman Highwheeler which was an enormous hit with the participants and spectators alike. Bill and Jody Longiotti motored in with their very nice 1901 Oldsmobile CDO soon after. All together, we had 14 members attend the Meet, all ready for the rain and excitement that follows our hobby. 6

The Lemays Family Museum attracts many car buffs and the rain kept some away but there was a steady stream of onlookers passing by our area in front of the Vintage Auto Museum. When the rain or drizzle would subside the tarps came off and cameras appeared from everywhere. We had a couple of opportunities to drive the carriages around the general area which was met with cameras and smiling faces. Many were surprised as Lemays events has not had horseless carriages entered in the show for the last 36 years, so we were a big hit. It was nice to meet the people that have taken the time to build carriages and hear the story behind each one. Lyle and Charlene drive there Holesman High wheeler as often as possible at their home in Olympia. They looked great with their period clothing sitting proudly as the small parade made its way around the grounds. Lyle and Charlene Hegsted received the People s Choice award with their Holsman HCR carriage. Ray Puser received the long distance award, as they had driven from Salome Arizona. Doug and Susan Murray drove from Mountain View, Alberta Canada. They shared photos of their Ford Model N build as did Claude Brown with his Son Clint of Claude s in progress Oldsmobile French Front Delivery build. Chuck and Colleen Snowden drove from Eureka, California and shared their pictures and ideas from their 1905 REO build. All in all it was a great day despite the rain. I had anticipated it was going to be a great Meet and was not disappointed. We made new friends and shared experiences we were unable to get on our group site. We also discussed having the next HCRB Meet at a location where we can drive our carriages with fewer restrictions. My special thanks to Claude Brown and Earl Brown, both were very instrumental in making this first Westcoast HCRB Meet a hit. Thank you both for all the support and excitement which keeps our hobby going strong. I have many pictures that Lee is expecting this morning for a Special Edition HCRB Newsletter, so I will close now and look forward to hearing from everyone online. Happy building to all our new friends, Mike Chambers Sultan, WA 7

From Claude Brown Lee, Sorry it has taken so long to get this going, I caught a cold at the meet from the damp & wind. We ended up with rain off & on for most the AM 7 part of the PM. Great when the sun was out. Mike Chambers watches as Ray & Tina Puser (Salome, AZ.) wipe water off their 05 REO. A real beauty. They drove 1545 miles to be here. Boy, did the cameras come out during these parade times. More so than other times. Our total member attendance was 14 w/ 4 HCR s. A great bunch of people. Good stories & stuff. 20

A photo taken inside the auction building. They had an auction that day besides having the car show. In the more than 5 buildings, there are more than 500 cars, 200 motorcycles,1969 back to the first motor bikes. Also ton s of more stuff, too big a list to name. It takes at least 3 days to see it all if a person is to be thorough. This is the largest collection of autos in the USA. There are other storage sites also. These, do NOT include the cars at the LeMay Auto Museum in downtown Tacoma about seven miles away. The museum is a for sure must see. WOW! It sounds that even though the weather did not cooperate, the Northwest HCRB Members had a great time in Tacoma. What an impact for the HCR hobby. We can certainly expect the membership to go up and the hobby also. My personal thanks to Mike, Claude and Ray for sending in all the fantastic pictures for the rest of us to see. I wanted to be with all of you in Tacoma but with another HCRB Meet taking place next month in Dallas, NC, the budget could not handle both trips, I m sure you all understand. Claude, I hope you get over that cold real soon CONGRATS GUY S Keep on Building! Lee 21
