2 MOST PREPARED AWARD LAWYERS WHO WENT ABOVE & BEYOND This month s award for most prepared attorneys shooting video goes to Washington Real estate attorneys Tom Oldfield and Jeff Helsden. Not only did they have their content prepared on time, their outlines were on topic and highly relevant to their potential clients and they had practiced endlessly. When I arrived to set up, it was evident to me that they were roaring to go. We started shooting at 8:00 a.m. and right from the start, Jeff hit it right out of the park. On point. On target and highly practiced. Tom talked about probate and 1031 tax exchanges. Both were extremely prepared and their confidence was clearly visible. A true sign of a successful video shoot is when the attorney gets into his groove and realizes that creating video is really fun once you start doing it. Both Jeff and Tom were pleasantly exhausted by the end of the day. Congratulations to both Jeff and Tom for this month s Lawyers Video Studio award! The McGlinn s of San Diego I had the pleasure of meeting Michael McGlinn and his son Ryan recently. They handle criminal defense of juveniles in the San Diego area. When I first met them, I learned that their biggest competitor was not private attorneys, but rather court-appointed public defenders. That presented a unique challenge in how to separate them from their colleagues. As I always say, it s important to know what your competitors are doing to market themselves and then make sure you do the opposite. In their case, the court-appointed public defenders don t do any marketing. The court appoints these attorneys. From a clients perspective the public defender is cheaper than a private defense attorney. How then can you compete against someone who does no marketing and is the lowest-price commodity in the complicated and confusing world of juvenile criminal law? The key answer is not to compete against them. Instead, highlight the differences. Explain the pros & cons of each. Let the consumer come to the realization that there are key differences and let them decide who they would prefer to have as their childs attorney.

4 Gerry s New Book... Here s the cover! THE STORYTELLER My good friend and colleague Andy Siegel just did another video shoot here in the Lawyers Video Studio in NYC. I have to tell you that I was amazed watching Andy work. He s a great storyteller. In fact, in this shoot, I had him telling stories all day. That s correct. All day. All his videos were stories. His stories were fascinating. They were interesting. They were intriguing. They were captivating. I truly appreciated his storytelling ability and as a fellow trial attorney I understood exactly what he was doing. I understood what was compelling about his stories. I told Andy to focus on his stories because he uses them often when he talks to juries. Andy is a natural. He looks at you and tells you the story of the Wizard of Oz without once ever referring to the characters, their location or the name of the story. You recognize the story immediately and the way he guides you though it is riveting. I had to smile. Repeatedly. His storytelling reminded me of exactly why he gets great results in the courtroom. I couldn t wait to hear the next story and the next one and the next. While in the middle of a story about a closing argument he made I was leaning forward in my chair eager to hear the rest of it. That s exactly the type of reaction you want from a viewer who comes to watch your content. The really cool thing about watching a pro tell a story is that it s so casual and natural. It s as if he s right in front of you just telling you something you want to hear. This was a remarkable day. By 5:45 pm it was time to pack up. We d been there since early in the morning. Andy stopped me and said Gerry...can t we do more? I smiled and said Definitely...but on another day. With virtually every lawyer I shoot video with, I get the same comment. They look at the clock and as we get toward the end of the day, they realize they ve created a ton of video content and really want to do more. continued on p. 5

5 THE STORYTELLER continued from p. 4 I ve known Andy since Junior high school (they call it middle school now) and he s a very talented personal injury and medical malpractice lawyer in Manhattan. Readers of my newsletter will remember the last time I wrote about Andy. Andy was a star soccer and lacrosse player in high school. His competitive edge continued into his professional life as an aggressive trial lawyer. His trial successes formed the basis for his second video shoot. A funny thing happened at the end of the day shooting with Andy... How cool is it to have an attorney spend all day shooting video and even though he created a ton of new video, he still wanted to create more. That s the power of educational video. You quickly realize how much useful information you have to offer your consumers and potential clients.
