Health Related Behaviour Questionnaire (HRBQ) Findings Claire Toas Public Health Analyst Newcastle City Council

Context The HRBQ is a self reported behaviours and perceptions questionnaire, conducted in schools in Newcastle with Years 4 and 6 (pupils aged 8 11 year) and years 8 and 10 (pupils aged 12 to 15 years). Two questionnaires - one for Primary and one for Secondary school pupils. All questionnaires taken anonymously Participating schools the schools that participated in 2011 were asked to participate in 2013.

HRBQ - Sample 4226 participated in 2013 / 5892 in 2011 2589 Years 4 & 6 (aged 8 to 11) - 51% of children in Newcastle in these age groups 1637 Years 8 & 10 (aged 12 to 15) - 32% of children in Newcastle in these age groups 43 schools involved in 2013 / 54 in 2011. Participation varied across the city

Smoking 12% secondary school - smoking once or twice, 2% primary school pupils - smoking once or twice 7% secondary school - smoking in last 7 days 99% primary school - said they had NOT smoked in the last 7 days Parental Smoking 39% (secondary school) report parents/carers smoke (44% - 2011) 38% (primary school) reported parents/carers smoke (42% 2011) 20% (secondary school) report parents/carers smoking indoors at home (25% 2011) 12% (secondary) report parents/carers smoke when they are in the car with them (22% 2011)

Secondary School Perceptions Smoking 20% report that hardly anyone in my school smokes

Smoking Secondary School Future plan to smoke 64% said they would definitely not smoke a cigarette in the next year

Relationships/Sexual Health Secondary School Key (yr. 10 pupils): 82% report never had a sexual relationship /18% reported having a sexual relationship 64% reported know how to access contraception and sexual health advice services. 15.42 is average age that you people think young people start having sex, yet only 18% have had a sexual relationship 88% reported never having unplanned sexual activity as a result of drinking Main source of information about sex - School sex education (38%) 13% of boys said their main source of information about sex was the internet

Relationships/Sexual Health Primary School Key Findings: 59% felt they knew enough about how their bodies changes as they get older Both boys (80%) and girls (87%) prefer their parents/carer to talk to them about growing up and about body changes 21% of girls report worrying quite a lot or a lot about how they look, compared to 13% of boys 19% of girls report worrying quite a lot or a lot about body changes compared to 14% of boys

Bullying Emotional Health & Wellbeing 15% of secondary pupils said they had ever been bullied at or near school in the last 12 months 24% of primary school pupils said they have been bullied at or near school in the last 12 months 43% of secondary school pupils think their school takes bullying seriously 69% of primary school pupils said the school take bullying seriously Why bullied 19% of primary school pupils said because of the way they look 13% said their size and weight

Worries Emotional Health & Wellbeing Year 10 - exams and tests 71% of primary school pupils worried about at least 1 thing a lot or quite a lot

Internet Safety: Secondary School Emotional Health & Wellbeing 47% said they used internet chat rooms 56% of boys have seen images online that were for adults only (47% 2011), compared to 35% of Girls. 56% of boys have looked online for pornographic or violent images, films or games compared to 11% of girls. Primary School 26% seen adult only pictures online 24% use chat rooms or social networking often or very often /everyday 12% said they had met someone in real life whom they first met online.

Emotional Health & Wellbeing School: Secondary School 33% their school cares whether they are happy or not 40% different backgrounds were valued Primary School 67% cares whether they are happy or not 54% valued people with different back grounds

Physical Activity Enjoy Physical Activity: 67% (secondary school) quite a lot or a lot (73% in 2011) 82% (primary school) quite a lot or a lot Fitness: 44% (secondary school) described themselves as fit or very fit (37% in 2011) 69% (primary school) described themselves as fit or very fit 17% (secondary school) said they were unfit or very unfit in 2013

Physical Activity Fitness - Secondary School

Secondary School Physical Activity 35% - at least 5 hours of moderate intensity physical activity last week and 15% said they did an hour or less. 16% of boys and 3% of girls said they would like to travel to school by bike if they had the choice

Physical Activity Primary School: 48% walked to school on the day of the survey 29% came by car. 27% said they would like to cycle to school if they had a choice. The Top 4 physical activities for year 6 pupils were: Boys Girls Football (69%) Running (races/tag) (54%) Running (race/tag) (60%) Going for walks (51%) Team Sports (56%) Dancing/gymnastics (50%) Going for walks (46%) Swimming (36%)

Physical Activity Secondary School Weight 45% happy with their weight 45% wanted to lose weight. 17% wanted help with their weight management 75% described themselves as a healthy weight 16% said they were overweight.

Physical Activity Primary School Viewed Their Weight 30% of pupils wanted to lose weight. 82% healthy weight 8% over weight 10% under weight

Healthy Eating Fruit & Veg 49% (secondary school) eat fresh fruit or vegetables on most days 34% (primary school) eaten 5 or more portions of fruit and veg. (22% in 2011) 19% (secondary school) had eaten 5 or more portions of fruit and veg. (14% in 2011): 12% had eaten none (17% in 2011)

Breakfast: Healthy Eating 94% (secondary school) reported having something for breakfast on day of the survey (17% said it was just a drink) 91% (primary) had something for breakfast on the morning of the survey Take Away/Fast Food 17% (secondary school) family has a take-away/fast food 3 or more days a week (8% 2011), 33% said rarely or never 18% (primary school) having take-away/fast food on three or more days a week (11% in 2011), 36% said rarely or never 23% (secondary school) had fizzy drinks on most days 28% (secondary school) eat sweets and chocolates on most days 27% (secondary school) eat crisps on most days

Primary School Healthy Eating

Drugs Secondary School: 92% reported never taking drugs 79% had not been offered cannabis The main drug used was cannabis, 6% said they had taken cannabis 4% taking an illegal drug and alcohol on the same occasion. Primary School 93% never been offered drugs, 4% didn t know 8% fairly sure or certain they know someone who uses drugs

Secondary School Drugs 62% legal highs - always unsafe 14% - safe if used properly

Secondary School Alcohol 87% didn t drink alcohol in last week 11% had been drunk at least once or twice a month in the last year. 7% had drank alcohol at home with their parents knowledge. 18% drink often and always to socialise and to have fun Primary School 82% didn t drink alcohol 14% reported their parents always know if they drink alcohol. 2% of boys and 1% of girls in year 6 said they had drank an alcoholic drink in the last 7 days 1% of pupils drank beer or larger and 1% said wine in the week before the survey
