Who are Multipix Imaging? A Professional Resource UK s leading independent distributor of machine vision components Experienced sales and support team with knowledge of a vast range of vision applications Providing extensive assistance in specifying, supporting and supplying vision components Successful customers! Founded in 1997 www.multipix.com

What is USB 3.0? USB 3.0 is the next major revision of USB. USB 1.0: January 1996, data rates of 1.5 Mbit/s (Low-Bandwidth) and 12 Mbit/s (Full-Bandwidth). USB 2.0: April 2000, higher data rate of 480 Mbit/s, realistic transfer rate of around 35 MB/s ("Hi-Speed"). USB 3.0: November 2008, much higher maximum data rate of up to 5 Gbits/s, realistic transfer rates of >350MB/s ( SuperSpeed )

What is USB3 Vision? USB3 Vision is a new industrial vision interface standard. It defines certain aspects of a device s (e.g. a camera s) behavior when used on a USB3.0 Bus. USB3 Vision describes and defines : Device Identification Device Control Streaming Data Mechanics

USB3 Vision connectors Defined: Screw-lock or non-screw-lock connectors

USB3 Vision Cable Details USB 3.0 cable: 1x Gnd 1x power 2x differential twisted pair (shielded) 1x unshielded USB 2.0 pair

USB3 Vision cable requirements Max. voltage drop of 225 mv (5 V @ 900mA) Ensured signal quality: Adequate signal strength to the receiver in order to maintain a low error rate. (Max. attenuation values for given frequencies) Defined max. propagation delay (end-to-end and intra-pair)

USB3 Vision Cable Requirements All issues increase over length... Meters 3 5 8 Passive cables up to 8m have been tested and approved!

USB 3.0 Vision Single Camera Set Up Industrial USB 3.0 cable, USB3 Vision compliant Lengths: 3m, 5m Further lengths will be available soon PCIe Card or on-board USB 3.0 Micro-b plug with screw lock USB 3.0 Standard A plug.

USB3 Vision Hubs and Multi-Camera Set Up Hubs support USB 3.0 Standard A receptacles and power There is a maximum of 4 ports per hub Industrial: with 24V and screw lock mounts PC 2-Port USB3.0 1 x Host Controller Single Path Single Path USB3.0 Hub USB3.0 Hub USB3 Vision Camera USB3 Vision Camera USB3 Vision Camera USB3 Vision Camera

USB 3.0 Host Controller Chipset Ratified as Part of the Standard: 1. Intel Ivy Bridge (on-mainboard): Z77 2. Renesas/ NEC: µpd720200 bzw. µpd720202 Recomended by Basler 1. Fresco Logic: FL1100, FL1009 2. AS Media: ASM1042 3. Texas Instruments

Why is USB3 Vision so Great? USB3.0 combined with USB3 Vision has some key advantages: High Bandwidth High Efficiency High Power Capability High Stability

Bandwidth A bandwidth limitation often means something unexpected will happen: Camera runs slowly Images get scrambled USB3.0 supports up to 5Gb/s >350 MB/s effective data bandwidth Allows a 5MP colour camera (such as a Basler aca2500-14uc) to run at the full 14fps in 16bit modes. Allows a CMOSIS 4MP camera to run at around 90 fps

Efficiency Efficiency means that the bandwidth is used optimally Uses asynchronous notifications instead of polling Full duplex data transfer Packets routed (unicast), not broadcasted Zero copy -> Direct Memory Access (DMA) Very low CPU load!

Power USB2.0 5V / 500mA 2.5W power supply Limited to low quality CMOS sensors Higher quality CMOS or CCD s need more USB 3.0 5V / 900mA 4.5W power supply A typical 2MP camera at 20fps requires around 3.5W

Stability USB3 Vision define several attributes to help make the connection stable and robust: Two shielded differential twisted pairs instead of one unshielded differential twisted pair. less problems with electromagnetic pulses (EMP) Several Checksums (CRC) allowing to find and to fix transmission problems. detects errors caused by noise Bulk data transfer to ensure reliable delivery via retries it will be delivered

USB 3.0 Vision Stability and Error Management Packet 1 Packet 3 Packet 2 Packet 8 Packet 7 Frame Buffer FX3 Buffer USB 3.0 backend Packet 3 Packet 2 Packet 1 Host < 3x Retry Packet 1 Packet 6 Packet 5 Packet 2 Packet 3 Packet 2 will be restored while Packet 4, 5 and 6 can be kept at the same time! Not possible for cameras without frame buffer Packet 4

USB3 Vision is GenICam 2.0 compliant GenICam 2.0 Compliance means: Advantage: Better compliance with 3rd party library/ software Advantage: Future proof and consistent

FireWire is soon to be obsolete - USB3 Vision is the natural replacement

USB3 Vision vs. FireWire USB3 Vision handles Packet Resends in a frame buffer concept and CRC. FireWire does not include Packet Resends: CRC only Both interfaces use Direct Memory Access (DMA) USB 3.0: USB request blocks (up to 4MB) FireWire-b: 8kB blocks USB3 has higher performance (6x higher) USB3 has more stability (DMA, Framebuffer, Resend, Bulk Data transfer, not Isocronous) Substainable USB 3.0 hardware and software Save Money IS THIS THE END OF FIREWIRE? OH S#%@!

Replacing FireWire With USB3 Vision

USB 3.0 vs. USB 2.0 USB 3.0 is not just faster than USB 2.0 it is overwhelmingly superior!

USB3 Vision is far superior than USB 2.0 1. Industrial standard (Reliable, more stablity) 2. Higher performance (10x higher) 3. Choose from more USB 3.0 host controllers options (PCIexpress card,on-board,embedded) 4. Lower CPU load 5. Save Money So, Choose ME!!

Summary of Key Features of USB3 Vision 1. Well-defined industrial standard for USB 3.0 hardware/software communication and mechanical connection 2. High Bandwidth 3. Very Low CPU load 4. Low latency and extremely low jitter 5. Stability of the whole system through USB3 Bulk transfer protocol with packet resend architecture 6. GeniCam Compliant! 7. USB is the MOST SUCCESFUL PC interface in history, meaning longevity and off the shelf accesories
