Fairfax Collegiate 703 481-3080 www.fairfaxcollegiate.com FCS FAIRFAX COLLEGIATE Intro to Pre-Algebra 6-8 Syllabus SUMMER PROGRAM Course Goals 1 Solidify Previous Knowledge Students will solidify previous knowledge of elementary school math concepts. 2 Introduction to Pre-Algebra Material Students will be introduced to Pre-Algebra concepts and methods. Course Topics 1 Computation Students will practice multiplication, division, addition, and subtraction. Order of operation will also be reviewed. 2 Variables, Terms, and Expressions Students will practice combining like terms, working with variables, substituting for variables, and using exponents. 3 Solving Equations Students will practice solving equations to find the value of a variable. Students will review methods for balancing equations using inverse operations. Solving equations will also reinforce review of computation methods. 4 Factoring Students will use their knowledge of multiplication and division of integers to find the greatest common factor and complete prime factorization of integers. 5 Rational Numbers Students will review how to work with fractions. They will turn mixed numbers into improper fractions and vice versa. Students will also review addition and subtraction of fractions through common denominators and multiplication of fractions. 6 Ratios and Percents Students will convert ratios into fraction and vice versa. Students will also work with simple probability and converting fractions into percentages and vice versa. 7 Graphing Students will graph both coordinate points and lines in slope intercept form. 8 Squares and Square Roots Students will find squares of integers and square roots of perfect squares. Course Schedule
Day 1 Introduction and Icebreaker Students will be introduced to the teacher and to each other and play a couple of quick games. The instructor will also briefly review classroom rules. Take Diagnostic Students will take the diagnostic assessment to determine their placement within the course curriculum. Students attempt to use whatever mathematical means necessary to turn the four numbers or expressions on their card Day 2 Computation Lesson Students will review the important aspects of computation to make sure they are prepared for Pre-Algebra. Students will use the text to practice topics that they have worked on earlier that day or earlier in Day 3 Variables, Terms, and Expressions Lesson Students will review how to work with variables, substitute values for variables, combine like terms, use exponents, and multiply expressions. Using Variables Students will practice manipulating variables. Students will use the text to practice topics that they have worked on earlier that day or earlier in
Day 4 Order of Operations Students will use a warmup game to practice order of operations either in small groups or with the entire class. Solving Equations Students will practice solving equations to find the value of a variable. Students will review methods for balancing equations using inverse operations. Solving equations will also reinforce review of computation. Bingo Order of Operations Students will play an order of operations bingo game 2-Step Equation Concentration Concentration matching game to practice working with 2-step equations. Students will use the text to practice topics that they have worked on earlier that day or earlier in Day 5 Factoring Lesson Students will use their knowledge of multiplication and division of integers to find the greatest common factor and complete prime factorization of integers. Day 6 Rational Numbers Lesson
Students will review how to work with fractions. They will turn mixed numbers into improper fractions and vice versa. Students will also review addition and subtraction of fractions through common denominators and multiplication of fractions. Day 7 Fraction Blackjack Students will play a version of blackjack to practice ordering fractions. Ratios and Percents Lesson Students will convert ratios into fraction and vice versa. Students will also work with simple probability and converting fractions into percentages and vice versa. Students attempt to use whatever mathematical means necessary to turn the four numbers or expressions on their card Day 8 Graphing Lesson Students will graph both coordinate points and lines in slope intercept form. Co-ordinate Graph Art Students will create art while reinforcing graphing using the coordinate plane. Day 9 Squares and Square Roots Students will practice squaring integers from 1-12 and then use that knowledge to find square roots of perfect squares.
Students attempt to use whatever mathematical means necessary to turn the four numbers or expressions on their card Day 10 Take Final Assessment Students will have an opportunity to show the growth and improvements they have made over the course of the session by taking the final assessment to see which topics they have improved on and which topics they still need to review more. Additional Pre-Algebra Activities Students will complete short activities and games that will reinforce recent topics in different and engaging ways. 2016 Fairfax Collegiate School, LLC.
