how it works. getting the most Out Of medicare. To get the most from Medicare, it helps to understand the basics of how it works. Original Medicare (also called Traditional Medicare) is a government program designed to provide basic health care insurance to Americans once they turn 65 or earlier if they become disabled. If you or your spouse worked, you paid into the Medicare fund every payday. Once you reach age 65, it s your turn to start putting that money to use. WHEn can you Enroll? There are three types of enrollment periods: 1. Initial: When you turn 65. For those new to Medicare, there is a sevenmonth window in which to enroll in Original Medicare and then choose your Medicare options. This enrollment period includes the three months before, during and after your 65th birthday month. 2. Special: Year-round. For those who qualify to enroll at a special time due to special circumstances or situations such as; moving into or out of plan service area, losing employer insurance coverage, gaining or losing Medicaid financial assistance eligibility, qualifying for Extra Help, current plan termination, qualifying for a Special Needs Plan or turning 65 while on Medicare disability. 3. Annual: October 15 December 7 every year. All Medicare beneficiaries can enroll, switch or drop Medicare Advantage and Prescription Drug coverage during this time each year. Coverage begins January 1 and will continue for the calendar year. 2

medicare is made up of SEvEral parts: parts a, B, c and d. Original Medicare (Medicare pays 80% and you pay 20%) Part A: Hospital Insurance Medicare Part A covers approved inpatient hospital costs, including skilled nursing facilities, home health care and hospice care. Once you turn 65, you re automatically qualified to participate in Part A. There is no cost to you (outside of your deductible) because you or your spouse paid Medicare taxes while working. Part B: Medical Insurance Medicare Part B covers doctors visits, medical services and supplies, therapies, ambulance services, outpatient surgeries and more. Part B is optional because you have to pay a monthly premium and annual deductible to receive it. Your monthly premium may also go up if you don t sign up for Part B when you first enroll in Medicare. Once you ve paid your deductible, Medicare Part B will cover 80% of any additional costs and you are responsible for the remaining 20%. Part C: Medicare Advantage Plans Medicare Part C is provided by Medicare Advantage Plans, replaces Original Medicare and provides all of your Part A (hospital) and Part B (medical) coverage. In addition, many Medicare Advantage plans also include Part D prescription drug coverage and plan extras. Medicare Advantage plans feature simple copays, zero or low monthly plan premiums and may require staying within a doctor network. You must be enrolled in Medicare Parts A and B to join a Part C Medicare Advantage plan. Part D: Prescription Drug Coverage Medicare Part D is designed to help lower prescription drug costs and can be purchased through private companies like Cigna. There are three coverage phases and your costs change in each phase. Deductible and Initial Coverage If a plan has a deductible you must pay those initial costs. Then you will only pay a copay or coinsurance for your drugs until you reach the Initial Coverage limit. Coverage Gap This is commonly referred to as the doughnut hole. Here you will pay a discounted amount that is 47.5% for brand and 72% for generic drugs. Once your combined drug costs reach the upper level of the Coverage Gap, you will have Catastrophic Coverage. Catastrophic Coverage Once you have Catastrophic Coverage you will pay a small amount for medications, typically as low as 5% of the cost of the drug. 3
