Externally assessed by OCR Unit Title: Fractions, decimals Level: Credit value: 3 Guided learning hours: 30 Unit reference number: D/504/6034 Unit purpose and aim On completion of this unit the learner will know how to simplify fractions and convert between fractions, decimals. The learner will also be able to find fractional parts of quantities and choose the appropriate form of fraction to work in. This will enable the learner to solve percentage problems in relation to money (price changes, interest earned and payable) by finding common percentage parts and checking percentage rises and falls. They will be able to check statements made using percentages. Learning Outcomes Assessment Criteria Additional Information The Learner will: Be able to compare fractions and mixed numbers having denominators of 2, 3, 4, 5, 8 or 0 The Learner can:. Simplify fractions into an equivalent form, including: halves quarters thirds fifths eighths tenths.2 Convert between mixed numbers and improper fractions.3 Order mixed numbers and improper fractions The Curriculum and Functional Skills criteria use the term common fractions. Common fractions is not a term that is used frequently in maths and such fractions are better known as simple or proper fractions. Learners should be taught to simplify to lowest simple form = 2 = 4 2 4 8 (eg 2 3 (eg 2 3 to 2 ) ) to 2 N2/L.: Read, write, order and compare in words and figures common fractions and mixed numbers OCR 202
Understand equivalent fractions, simplifying a fraction by cancelling all common factors 2 Be able to calculate fractional parts (denominators = 2, 3, 4 or 0) of numbers, quantities and measurements 2. Calculate fractional parts of: numbers quantities in appropriate units measurements in appropriate units Calculation of numbers, quantities and measurements to include Unit fractional parts Non unit fractional parts Simple mixed fractional parts Know how to express fractional parts of quantities or measurements in appropriate units N2/L.2: Find parts of whole number quantities or measurements (e.g. 2/3 or 3/4) divide any number as operators 3 Understand the place value system with decimals up to three decimal places 3. State the value of a given digit in decimal numbers with up to three decimal places 3.2 Order two or more numbers with up to three decimal places N2/L.4:Read, write, order and compare decimals up to three decimal places 2 OCR 202
Order rational numbers Use decimal notation and recognise that each terminating decimal is a fraction. Add and subtract decimals up to two decimal places 4 Be able to perform the four arithmetic operations, using written methods, with numbers having up to two decimal places 5 Underst as fractions out of 00 and as decimals 4. Perform calculations using numbers with up to two decimal places by: adding subtracting 4.2 Perform calculations by: multiplying a number with up to two decimal places by a single-digit whole number dividing a number with up to two decimal places by a single-digit whole number 4.3 Multiply whole numbers and numbers with up to two decimal places by 0 and 00 4.4 Divide whole numbers and numbers with up to two decimal places by 0 and 00 5. Convert percentages to fractions 5.2 Convert fractions, whose denominators are factors of 00, to percentages 5.3 Convert decimals to percentages 5.4 Convert percentages to decimals N2/L.5: Add, subtract, multiply and divide decimals up to two places N2/L.6: Multiply and divide whole numbers and decimals by 0, 00 and 000 divide any number Use decimal notation and recognise that each terminating decimal is a fraction. as operators. Add and subtract decimals up to two decimal places Common fractions are more often known as simple or proper fractions. N2/L.7: Approximate decimals by rounding to a whole number and to one or two decimal places N2/L.3: Recognise equivalencies between OCR 202 3
common fractions, percentages and decimals (e.g. 50% = /2 or 0.25 = /4) and use these to find part or whole-number quantities 6 Be able to calculate simple percentages of numbers 6. Calculate 5, 0, 20, 25, 50 and 75 percent of a number 6.2 Increase a number by 5, 0, 20, 25, 50 and 75 percent 6.3 Decrease a number by 5, 0, 20, 25, 50 and 75 percent Understand that percentage means number of parts per 00 and use this to compare proportions Calculations to include quantities and measures N2/L.9: Find simple percentage parts of quantities and measurements N2/L.0: Find simple percentage increases and decreases Use percentage, repeated proportional change as operators divide whole numbers using a range of strategies Assessment Externally assessed by OCR set and marked tests, requiring short-answer responses. Available as paper-based and on-screen assessment. 4 OCR 202
A calculator may be used during the assessment for this unit. *Mapping and Signposting Information This unit covers elements of the Curriculum (ANCC). For ease of reference we have indicated which parts of the unit map to elements of the ANCC. Achievement of this unit will also support learners who wish to progress to other programmes of learning and the Signposting information indicates areas within a Functional Skills (English/mathematics) or GSCE (English/mathematics) programme of learning that a learner will be able to more confidently progress towards after completion. This unit will not support progression towards any parts of the GCSE or Functional Skills criteria that are in italics. OCR 202 5
