Part-time programme Diploma in Advanced Business & Executive Coaching

INTRODUCTION Coaches and consultants are keen to find new and deeper ways to understand and work with their clients. This in turn is producing a great deal of interest in what is increasingly called The Psychological Dimension of Coaching. In our view it is both unnecessary and unrealistic to expect business coaches to undertake lengthy psychological training as part of their overall development. Nevertheless, many executive coaches are recognising a need to know more and to be more skilled in the psychological and emotional dimensions to coaching issues. In supervision sessions with coaches we regularly hear comments such as, there was something not quite right but I didn t know what it was, or I really didn t know what I was dealing with. The question of where is the boundary between coaching and counselling? is regularly asked by coaches in training and by more experienced practitioners. Many coaches experience an urgent need for more knowledge and more skills. With this in mind, we, in collaboration with PB Coaching have designed a programme to address this. Our programme is unique in that it provides key psychological theory and practice for coaching practitioners. It also addresses the personal development needs of the coach. Who is this programme for? This programme typically attracts the following: Practising business coaches who want to develop their theoretical understanding of, and capability to work with, the psychological aspects of coaching Internal HR Directors or Training/OD Consultants, with a coaching background, who want to expand their knowledge and skills in the psychological aspects of coaching Chartered/Occupational Psychologists who have a coaching background and who want to enhance their capacity to work with the psychological aspects of coaching Line Managers with a coaching background, who wish to enhance their capacity to work with the psychological aspects of coaching Retiring executives, who have a coaching background, and wish to expand their portfolio of consultancy by working with the psychological aspects of coaching Coaches from a related professional background such as counselling, psychotherapy, teaching, business psychology etc. who wish to further develop their capacity to work with the psychological aspects of coaching What will I get from this programme? The programme provides the theory, skills and both the personal and professional development required for the coach to address the psychological aspect of the coachee s agenda. Participants will critically evaluate key theories and concepts and address best ethical practice. There is a strong focus on coach practice sessions with a psychological focus, including regular opportunities for observed coach practice, with feedback from peers and tutors. DURATION: 12 days LOCATION: UCD Smurfit School, Dublin PROGRAMME DIRECTOR: Dr. Geoff Pelham COST: 8,750 ENQUIRIES: 01 716 8889 or exec.ed@ucd.ie "In the near future I believe we will see greater attention to the psychological development of the coach as a response to the growing awareness and acceptance in the field that psychological mindedness is one of the key higher level proficiencies of executive coaching." Peter Bluckert Diploma in Advanced Business & Executive Coaching

His extensive University lecturing and programme management background provides firm support for those participants unfamiliar with undertaking a programme at postgraduate level. Geoff also has an extensive background, interest and understanding of the key ideas, writers and research in coaching and related fields, and a talent for presenting complex ideas in a concise and engaging manner. His particular area of interest and research is the importance of the relationship in professional settings. He is a member of the EMCC and is committed to ensuring that all training programmes delivered by PB Coaching are of the highest possible standard. Psychological mindedness and particularly a high level of self and social awareness, stands as a baseline proficiency for executive coaching. Peter Bluckert

PROGRAMME CONTENT The programme is delivered over a series of six workshops, twelve days in all. Each workshop consists of elements of theory, coach practice and personal/professional development. Inputs from tutors include: The psychological dimensions to coaching and psychological mindedness, focusing on the psychological aspects of coachees agendas and the personal/professional qualities required of the coach Mapping the field of psychological theories and approaches: describing and critically evaluating a range of psychological theories relevant to coaching The Person-Centered approach: the importance of the coaching relationship and the core conditions of empathy, congruence and unconditional positive regard The Psychodynamic approach: unconscious processes in coaching, including transference, counter-transference and psychological defences Attachment theory: the importance of a secure base in coaching and repeating patterns of relating The Gestalt approach: the importance of awareness, the here-and-now, the Cycle of Awareness and strategic and intimate interventions Transactional Analysis: ego states, scripts and the Drama Triangle Existential phenomenological: authenticity, ownership, taking a stand on what matters The Use of Self in coaching: theoretical background and practical application to coaching Creative approaches to coaching: bringing creativity into coaching, including working with image, metaphor, drawing, movement and dramatic enactment The boundary between coaching and counselling/psychotherapy: Identifying the boundary and exploring ethical and referral issues The learning process There is a mixture of tutor inputs, group exercises, small and large group discussion and 1:1 observed coach practice. There is also an experiential personal development aspect to enable participants develop their capacity to work at the psychological level. Participants form peer learning groups to support each other s development. Only by stepping into the realm of the personal - by engaging managers in the relationship between their individual drives and business goals, their blind spots and their developmental needs - can coaches harness the passions and convictions that underpin leadership excellence.
