DataStream Introduction DataStream is a database of company financials, stock market data in different markets, economic data such as market indices, interest rates, exchange rates, and other variables. DataStream provides a range of charting and reporting tools that enable you to manipulate and display, or simply download that data in the way that you want. DataStream Advance is installed in Bergami Center under the path: Start/all programs/financial Center Software/Datastream. Simply double click on the Advance icon. When Datastream has loaded successfully, the Request screen is displayed. Making a request 1. Search for series First select the type of request under Analysis (single series or multiple series) and also data or chart. For example, a single series overview. We can also select the type of chart, report or data format from the list displayed. Next, select the type of data. Under the Data Category Column, various series are listed (Equities, equity indices, bonds ). Select the type of series you want from the Data Category window- holding the mouse over the data category will display quick links to Navigator. If you know exactly what kind of data you are searching for, click the Criteria Search button to use the filter. Otherwise click Explorer to browse. Type of Data Type of Request
For example, to see overview of exchange rate data, click on Criteria Search, it will bring us to Datastream Navigator Screen. All Results All entries regarding exchange rates are displayed on this screen except that it shows limited number per page. You can click Next Page and scroll to other pages. To quickly narrow down the list, use the Refine Search on the left side of the screen. For full access to DataStream series filter, use the Advance Search button on the upper right corner, and that will bring us to the screen below:
Here you can enter more specifications. Click dotted icon to get list of currencies and click to select. Click on the plus (+) icon to add a line and the minus ( ) icon to delete a line. Specify other criteria. For the date, use dd/mm/yyyy format. For example, if we want the exchange rate between Australian Dollar and U.S. Dollar for 10 years from 1990 to 2000. Fill out the filter as below: After entering all the criteria, click on the screen. button, qualified results will be displayed in the next
2. Select series From the list, select the one you desire and Click on the name. It will bring you back to the request screen. Click to choose The name of the series we selected is displayed, now we can modify the data frequency and length of time using the Time Period button on the top right. 3. Retrieving series After setting up the time period, click run now button to retrieve results displayed below.
Double click on other request types to retrieve chart, report or time series data. Following are the line chart and time series data. Line chart
Time Series Data 4. Multi-series data DataStream allows us to compare and download multiple series in one chart. Simply select request type: Multi-series Time series data.
Now let s do it again for exchange rate. Choose the Exchange Rates in data category and do criteria search and advance search just like we did before, it will bring us to the Navigator screen: Fill out the criterion to search for exchange rates between U.S. dollar, Mexican Peso and Brazilian Real. Set the time period between 1900 and 2000. Then click Search now.
On the following screen you see list of series. Check boxes on the desired series. Then click use selected :
This will bring you back to the request screen, and you can see entry names displayed:
Click on Run Now and the time series data will be displayed as follows: 5. Download Right click on the data table displayed. Click on Export to save result in file. We can also click the button on the tool-bar at the top to open and save result to Excel worksheet directly.
Export to Excel Worksheet Save as File You can follow the above procedures to download other data series such as interest rates, stock indices, CDS data, country data, etc. You can also click Help at the top and consult the Online Manuals for more details and comprehensive data access.
