Evaluate social variables that increase success in personal relationships according to sociological research. 2. Identify various parenting styles and analyze the impact such method had on student s childhood and ways to improve parenting for the next generation.. Conduct sociological research by using a research method to identify themes or cycles that run in families/couples and determine solutions to reduce social problems in our society. The instructor will decide what constitutes as a justified emergency. Any late assignments are subject to penalty. You can however, turn in any assignments early. If you know you are going to be absent when an assignment due, plan ahead! ATTENDANCE: Class attendance is required and I will be taking roll everyday. If you have to miss class, it is YOUR responsibility to learn the material you missed on your own time. It is strongly recommended that you exchange contact information with a classmate in case you are absent. If you decide not to attend class at all, please officially drop the class. *Class Discussion: This is not a traditional class where the professor lectures and the students listen. I want to know what you think and I expect you to contribute using relevant concepts we have learned from the reading and lectures. There will be group discussion questions with each lecture. Discussion questions just boost your participation points; they do not receive a letter grade. Also, even if you attend every class during the semester, if you do not contribute to discussion, your participation grade is subject to penalty. Furthermore, our classroom discussions/activities will involve very controversial topics and may become heated. It is vital that you respect all of your classmates, even if their point of view differs from your own! If you are disrespectful to a classmate or teacher during class, your participation grade is subject to penalty. *Technology: Class participation also includes silencing all phones and other electronic devices. Computers are okay for note taking, however, if you are not taking notes, you will lose your privilege of using a computer during class. *Classroom Etiquette: All college policies and regulations relating to student conduct will be observed. In general, disruptive behavior of any kind will not be tolerated. This includes repeated tardiness, inappropriate language, surfing the web, texting, sleeping in class, arriving late, leaving early or walking in and out of classroom for calls, food, etc. Disruptive students can be suspended for up to 2 class sessions at the professor s discretion. Please take care of all personal business before or after class. Research Chapter Assignment -Students will conduct a small-scale research paper while incorporating one chapter from the textbook. The due date for this paper is subject to which chapter the student selects. Each research paper will be due according to the corresponding day we go over each chapter (stated in course calendar below). Students will also briefly share their research with the rest of the class. Directions for this assignment will be available on the class website, and we will go over specific instructions during class time. Quizzes -Quizzes will be administered so you can demonstrate that you have read and understood the assigned readings. There will be a verbal review of upcoming quiz material during class. I do not allow make-up quizzes for any reason, but the lowest quiz grade will be dropped J Family Interviews- Students will conduct an in-depth family interview and write a corresponding paper. Detailed directions and rubric will be discussed during class and posted to the class website. Exam 1 -A Multiple Choice Test for Chapters 1, 2,, 4, and 5 will be distributed. You will need to bring #2 pencils with erasers and a green 882E Scantron. Exam 2 -A Multiple Choice Test for Chapters 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10 will be distributed. You will need to bring #2 pencils with erasers and a green 882E Scantron. Exam -A Multiple Choice Test for Chapters 11, 12, 1, 14 and 15 will be distributed. You will need to bring #2 pencils with erasers and a green 882E Scantron. Campus/Department Policies Cheating- Unauthorized material used during an examination (including electronic devices), changing answers after work has been graded, taking an exam for another student, forging or altering attendance sheets or other documents in the course, looking at another student s paper/scantron/essay/computer or exam with or without their approval is considered cheating. Cheating is not tolerated and will result in disciplinarian action. Plagiarism- Plagiarism is defined as the act of using ideas, words, or work of another person or persons as if they were one s own, without giving proper credit to the original sources. This includes definitions found online on Wikipedia, materials from blogs, twitter, or other similar electronic resources. Whether 2

the material is a paragraph, a sentence, or a part thereof, you will receive a zero for the first offence for the assignment or test in question. Any further offenses may result in expulsion from the class, or more as determined by the disciplinary action of Student Services. Recording devices in the classroom- Section 78907 of the California Education Code prohibits the use of any electronic audio or video recording devices, or photos without prior consent of the instructor, (including cell phones, laptops, cameras, MP players, and more). Medical Conditions- If you have any conditions that I need to know about, please notify me immediately by email and provide me with an emergency phone number. Emergency Procedures- If required to evacuate a classroom or building, students will proceed to a clear and safe area away from the building.
