GLOBAL European Union CAMPUS Master s Programmes and Diplomas in Human Rights and Democratisation

The Institutional Framework The EU has invested on human rights education through a variety of means and supported, among others, first the creation of the European Master s Degree in Human rights and Democratisation (E.MA), at the core of the activities of the European Inter-University Centre for Human Rights and Democratisation (EIUC), and subsequently the creation of other Regional Master s Degrees around the globe. EIUC with the support of the European Union, and the Regional Master s Programmes in Human Rights and Democratisation represented by the Universities of Pretoria, Sydney, Buenos Aires, Sarajevo and Yerevan established the Global Campus for Master s Programmes and Diplomas in Human Rights and Democratisation (GC) in 2012. It is the result of a process of institutionalization and reinforcement, marked by the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding in January 2012, which marked the birth of the Global Campus. The Global Campus connects over 100 Universities from 6 Regional Masters covering 5 continents Through the Global Campus EIUC now coordinates the work among six Regional Master s Programmes and promotes a sustainable integration of their activities in a long term perspective with the aim of establishing a network of professionals, academics, human rights activists and defenders based on truly global foundations. The Global Campus intends to enable the further integration and cooperation among the Master s Programmes. Its strategic priorities can be summoned up as follows: Enhancing the level of integration and coordination of the regional programmes Fostering the outreach of the programmes beyond the academic world, being convinced that the universal nature of human rights and democracy is best supported through global cooperation Meeting the challenges posed by the EU in terms of human rights policy objectives as well as the need for the EU to better coordinate and rationalize resources devoted to specialised education on human rights and democracy Preparing an adequate framework and legal basis in view of broadening the existing cooperation to include further actors, decision-makers and Master s programmes on human rights and democracy focusing and broadening the discourse on human rights on areas where is more compelling

Global Campus Activities The GC s overall objective is to create a new framework for cooperation between EIUC and the Regional Master Programmes and thus to move from coordination to integration of a growing number of activities. Academic Integration Activities The Global Campus coordinates the progressive integration of the activities among the Regional Programmes, each representing already a network of leading universities, by: Enriching their programmes collectively and severally Facilitating the exchange of lecturers and tutors Foreseeing the exchange of students, tutors and supervisors among programmes Sharing the adoption of more integrated curricula Exploiting the potential of new technologies for the purpose of academic teaching and research Supporting a joint alumni association Promoting the EU values in Human Rights and Democracy Outreaching Activities The Global Campus has already developed or will develop a series of activities such as: Internship opportunities Joint events Partnership with international agencies Website NGOs Networking Conferences Yearbooks Newsletter Capacity Building Intensive Classes Common publications Virtual Global Classroom and Classrooms Joint Training activities Advocacy Workshops with Civil Society The possibilities offered by a further integration of activities and experiences, together with the added value of knowledge and networking which the Global Campus envisages are consistent with a EU vision of empowering a new generation of HR specialists, to be endowed with a unique mix of academic and professional knowledge as well as global networking opportunities. Both at the local, regional, national or international level alumni of the programmes already play an important role in a daily defence and promotion of human rights.

Educating the Next Generation of Human Rights Professionals and Defenders Currently I am working for Save the Children Africa Advocacy Office here in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. ( ) The Master s Programme really tested my abilities and showed me that I can achieve the impossible. (Martha Guraro, Graduate from the African Programme) Through EIUC I had the opportunity to participate in the EIUC Fellowship Programme. ( ) Ultimately it gave me the opportunity to put into practice so much what we had studied throughout the Master s Programme. (Jean Tomkin, Graduate from the E.MA Programme) Studying a truly regional degree responsive to the enormous diversity of the Asia Pacific was the best foundation a young human rights practitioner could ask for. (Laura McManus, Graduate from the Asia-Pacific Programme)
