Pupil s name:.. Date: PROJECT IN RECYCLING We should think of various ways to protect our environment. We should organize a project on recycling. Discuss and take notes: Do we have recycling bins? Do we recycle paper, glass, plastic, batteries? Where are the recycling bins in our school? Do we take measures to keep our schoolyard clean? If yes, how? Discussion: How much environmentally sensitive can we be in our everyday school life? 1. Should we put bins in the school in order to collect used paper, batteries, glass and plastic? Should we have a recycling team for this job? Yes: No: 1

Remember!!! Every ton of paper we RECYCLE can save 17 trees from being cut down to make new paper. 2. The school library is the best place to learn about REUSE, because that s what a library is about. The books can be borrowed, read and returned. Is this a good measure to limit logging(=υλοτοµεία)? Yes: No: 3. Pupils can use the computers to do their schoolwork and save paper by making all the changes before printing out the final copy. They can also use CDs to store the information they find in the internet rather than print out all the information. (REDUCE) Is this method a good start? Do you believe that computers should replace books one day? Yes: No: THE THREE Rs: REUSE : Use things again and again. REDUCE: means reduce the amounts we use from the very start so that we have less to throw RECYCLE: use old used things to make new ones! (make a poster using the three Rs!!) REUSE: 1. Reuse books and notebooks 2

2. Always use both sides of a piece of paper before you recycle it. 3. Use old paper to make paper masks. 4. Use refillable pens not disposable pens. 5. Use a glass bottle fill it with water or juice and take it to school. Do not buy plastic bottles of one use only. 6. Encourage school to use rechargeable batteries and refillable print cartridges 7. When organizing parties at school: use washable plates and cups and metal cuttlery, prefer not to be plastic or paper ones. Anything else you can add? REDUCE: 1. Save energy by turning off the lights during the break 2. Check if the package of the things you buy is environmentally friendly. 3. Do not buy to much food you don t need to eat. You can reduce waste. 4. Do not start a new page for each piece of work, rule off previous work and continue on the same page. 5. Pupils should prefer going to school on foot rather than by car to reduce air and traffic pollution. Anything else you can add? 3

RECYCLE: 1. Work on waste: Schools can work together either within an area or between 2 different countries. 2. Compost bins: can be provided to schools by local council. 3. Recycling uses less energy than making things again: Making aluminium cans from old ones uses only 1/20 of the energy we need to make them from new materials. Every can made from recycled aluminium saves enough energy to power a TV for 3 hours. 4. Pupils should attend seminars and get involved into recycling projects, activities regularly. 5. Put batteries, glass and paper into the appropriate recycling bins. Anything else you can add? 4

How much water, energy, how many trees we waste in Greece if we think of the 700,000 tones of paper we send to the landfills each year? 700,000 tones of paper: 2,800,000,000 kg of wood 28,000,000,000 litres of water 4,900,000,000 kwatt of energy. If we all do our best, our planet will survive. We must all do everything we can to help save our planet. 5
