Chapter 1 Introduction Administrator Console The Typing Instructor Network Administrator Console provides you with the ability to manage users from a single location. As an Administrator of Typing Instructor for Kids Network, you will be able to monitor typist status, create and manage groups of typists, manage individual typists, compile reports of typist progress, and manage the configuration and settings. Typing Instructor Network Organization Take a moment to understand the organization of the Typing Instructor Network organization. There are three components to Typing Instructor for Kids Network: 1. The File Server The File Server is the computer where the shared Typing Instructor files are stored. The data needed by the Typing Instructor program and typist data are stored here. 2. The Administrator Console The Administrator Console is the workstation from which the network administrator manages the typists. 3. The Typist Workstations The Typist Workstations are the computers from which the network typists run the Typing Instructor for Kids program.

Administrator s Guide 1-2 The following diagram shows the relationship between the three components: Installing the Administrator s Console Before starting the Administrator s Console, it must be installed. Please see Step 5 in the Setting Up Your Typing Instructor Network Guide, Installing Typing Instructor Network Administrator s Console. Starting the Administrator s Console After installation, you can run the Administrator s Console program. To do so, use the Administrator Console option from the Typing Instructor for Kids Network group on the Start menu. To Run the Administrator s Console from the Start menu: 1. Click the Start button, highlight Programs, highlight Typing Instructor for Kids Network, and then click Administrator Console.

1-3 Typing Instructor Network Version Using the Administrator Console Administrator Login When you select the Administrator Console option from the Typing Instructor for Kids Network group, you will be prompted to enter a password. Use the following password to access the Administrator Console: TIAdmin The default password is case sensitive. Once you successfully log in, you can change the Administrator s password by clicking Configuration, and then clicking Change Administrator Password on the menu. Type the current password, then type the new password and re-enter the confirmation. Click the Change button to apply the new password. Be sure to record your password. Note: The Open Recent option allows you to change to a different server.

Administrator s Guide 1-4 About Super Password Super Password allows the administrator to login as any student using the Administrator Console Password. Overview and Features The Administrator Console The Administrator Console of Typing Instructor Network provides a series of tabs. These options include: Home Settings Locks Users Clicking the tabs displays additional features to assist you in monitoring, maintaining, and managing Typing Instructor typists.

1-5 Typing Instructor Network Version Home Tab The Administrator Console Home tab allows the Administrator to locate or change the Configuration Path to the Typing Instructor configuration file. This file is located in the Typing Instructor Network main share folder. To change the path, click Configuation, click Open, and browse to the TypingInstructor.cfg. Double-click the TypingInstructor.cfg file, or select the file and click the Open button. For the Administrator Console to function properly, and access typist data, it must be associated with the Typing Instructor configuration file. The Administrator Console needs Full Control access to the file server and to the Data folder. License Code and Management Typing Instructor Network is licensed on a per workstation basis. The License Code section on the Home tab displays the workstations that have successfully connected to the Typing Instructor File Server. Once the number of PC licenses equals the number designated by your license, the Administrator Console will show that you have 0 workstations available. Any subsequent PCs attempting to connect to Network Typing Server will receive an invalid workstation message, stating that the workstation cannot be validated. To obtain additional licenses contact Individual Software Sales department at (800) 822-3522 x140. A License Key will be provided to you at the time of purchase. If no License Key is used, you are given a 30-day use with five workstations. If you did not enter a License Key during installation, you can click the License Key option and enter your key.

Administrator s Guide 1-6 Settings Tab The Typing Instructor Settings tab of the Administrator Console allows you to define specific defaults and access settings to be used globally by all workstations. Let s further explore the Typing Instructor Settings.

1-7 Typing Instructor Network Version Access Control The Access Control options allow the administrator to control how typists access the program and give the typists flexibility with different login options. Allow Self Registration Typing Instructor will allow first-time users to enter their name directly into the typist database from a typist workstation with the Self Registration feature. If this option is not selected, only Administrators can add users to the user database. If the Self Registration feature is disabled, the first-time users will receive an error message and will not be permitted to log in. Require Password Typing Instructor does not require a password with the User ID at the time of login. Administrators can set up a password requirement by clicking the Require Password option. With this option set, a user without a password will be prompted to enter a password at the time of first login. The user will not be permitted to use Typing Instructor until a password is entered. The password will be required for each subsequent log in. Login Style The Standard login selection will not display a list of names. Autocomplete displays the student names in a drop-down list.

Administrator s Guide 1-8 Typing Defaults The Typing Defaults allow the Administrator to set a variety of settings for all network typists. The Typing Defaults are Goal WPM (Words Per Minute), and Allow backspace. Note: These defaults will be applied to each new typist that logs in for the first time. Goal WPM The Goal Words Per Minute is the typing speed a typist is trying to attain during their typing activities. Typists will begin at a low speed, such as 5, 10 or 15 words per minute. Challenge the typist by setting a Goal WPM that is slightly higher than the typist is capable of attaining. The Goal WPM is used for passing tests and determines the speed of the games in typing plans.

1-9 Typing Instructor Network Version Allow Backspace Select to enable the Backspace key in lessons, tests, and articles. Language Students can learn to type in both English and Spanish. Default Plan The Suggested Typing Plan is the default plan as signed to all new typists. Use the Typist Management section to as sign a different plan to existing typists.
