HEAnet IaaS Proof of Concept 1. Background 2. Client benefits 3. HEAnet Cloud Profile 4. Project status update & next steps 5. Use Cases 6. Demonstration 7. Q&A Robert Hackett Alexander Ufimtsev
The role of cloud? Background HEAnet/NRENs/EU/Vendors - cloud is a key element for the future Multicloud future SaaS/PaaS/IaaS across public & private HEAnet role driven by HEAnet Strategy Cloud Neutral HEAnet role is to assist and support clients in adoption of relevant cloud services Brokering Direct services (build) e.g. Edustorage
Purpose of POC s to : Proof of Concept Approach Evaluate / prove the technology Help clients to identify usecases for (any) IaaS cloud Provide clients with a Virtual Private Cloud option Identify level of interest for a potential future service(s) & business case Two aspects to the HEAnet cloud project 1. Multicloud Portal 2. IaaS Community Cloud Cloud Compute = CIERA
Client Benefits Why? Data security / Location Integration VPC Cost Model Federation / SSO VPC Community Cloud / Virtual Private Cloud Network
HEAnet CIERA IaaS Cloud Compute
Cloud Profile - Multicloud Portal CIERA Portal - Dell Cloud Manager (DCM) Federated access Single Sign-on Single portal for core tasks across multiple clouds HEAnet Community cloud Public clouds (client a/c) via api Azure, GCE, AWS Private clouds? Local control (by IT department) incl access, rights Control clouds via API Cost control - quotas, budget codes
Cloud Profile CIERA VMs on demand Choice of VM images & sizes Centos, Debian, Ubuntu, RHEL, Windows server, LAMP, Client images Additional Storage via Edustorage VM Connectivity to internet VM Connectivity to campus layer 2, requires advance work Public IPv4 addresses
Roadmap Currently completing build out, UAT, stress testing, training Phase 1 (JAN 2015) : Multicloud portal and CIERA Local VMs Phase 2 : CIERA Virtual Private Cloud VMs Phase 3 : Public Cloud VMs Early access possible to a few clients for testing POC extends to Sept 2015 Openstack Installation Edugate Integration UAT Service Onboarding Training Server Installation Complete Today 2014 Aug Sep Oct Nov Dec Jan 2015
Usecases : Application Suitability Why do we need to choose usecases carefully : Cloud architecture and behaviour is different from traditional IT Not all applications are suitable not designed for cloud / licensing Cloud technology is still relatively new advice is to build up experience Good Usecase candidates : Have already been virtualised Distributed in nature i.e. are fault tolerant in relation to the underlying infrastructure Not sensitive to network latency Don t require high disk I/O
Client Requests / Potential Usecases This is a selection of what clients have requested Cloud VMs for so far : Off site services Disaster Recovery (off-site synch to production environment) Test & Development Websites Office IT systems Student Virtual machines Research Compute Special Projects big compute demands / short lifetimes Virtual Learning Environments DNS, LDAP Also HEAnet Service Platform, Network development testing
How to get access to HEAnet CIERA Contact ciera@heanet.ie to register interest or discuss further Limited cloud resources so need to manage access Document usecase expression of interest form Decision per Institute and local admin(s) identified and network contacts No obligation or charges Onboarding process to answer questions, network config/support etc At the end of the POC? We need your feedback usecase experience, features, demand etc Is there a need / business case for a production service
Summary HEAnet Strategy Cloud neutral, Broker, Build & Support Cloud services are still immature but rapidly becoming mainstream Transition will take time but HEAnet role to support client requirements CIERA is a low risk/cost way to start with your usecases and future VPC After POC? - is there a demand / business case for a production service
