PARCC Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers
Why PARCC in 2015? So why should a district elect to administer PARCC instead of MCAS in spring 2015? Students participating in PARCC will have a head start on experiencing a next generation assessment the type of assessment that all schools will likely be required to administer in the 2015-2016 school year Districts that choose to administer PARCC in spring 2015 will be able to do so at NO RISK they will have their 2015 accountability levels "held harmless"
What does PARCC look like? Computer based or paper and pencil 2 parts in English language arts (PBA and EOY) 2 parts in math (PBA and EOY) The first part (PBA) focuses on writing and analytical skills The second part (EOY) targets reading and math skills The two parts combined assess knowledge, skills, and ability to think critically
Part 2 Part 1 English/ Language Arts Mathematics Performance-Based Assessment (PBA) Late March early April Writing effectively Analyzing text Solving multi-step problems Using abstract reasoning End-of-Year Assessment (EOY) May Reading comprehension Understanding major gradelevel appropriate math concepts
Does it count? In 2014 selected classes participated in the PARCC field test For the 2015 test, PARCC results will be official Students will receive performance results Parents and teachers will receive performance results Grade 10 will not take PARCC since MCAS is still required for graduation MCAS science and MCAS-Alt will continue as is for all grades The 9 th and 11 th grade PARCC tests are optional
Hold Harmless Districts that chose to administer PARCC in spring 2015 will have their accountability levels held harmless. This means a district s accountability level can only improve or remain the same. It cannot decline from its 2014 level.
Hold Harmless Approach for Schools Administering PARCC What will hold harmless look like in practice? Below are three hypothetical examples of 2015 accountability determinations for schools that participate in PARCC in spring 2015 Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education 7
