2 Annual Report on Curriculum, Instruction, and Student Achievement OUR REPORT TO OUR COMMUNITY The purpose of this Annual Report on Curriculum, Instruction, and Student Achievement is to report Maple Lake School District #881 efforts and results to improve curriculum and instruction. This report includes data that measures academic performance including the results of the Minnesota Comprehensive Testing for 3 rd 11 th graders, NWEA MAP Tests (Northwest Evaluation Association Measures of Academic Progress and Achievement Level Tests), ACT, and ACT Explore and Plan test data. In addition, this report describes the curriculum review process and our improvement plans. **This report was presented to the Maple Lake Board of Education for review and adoption on September 9, It is posted for all district residents on the school s website with the intent of informing the public of student achievement and the impact of the curriculum and instruction throughout the past year. MAPLE LAKE ELEMENTARY IS DEEMED TO BE A MINNESOTA SCHOOL OF EXCELLENCE ACCORDING TO THE MINNESOTA ELEMENTARY SCHOOL PRINCIPAL S ASSOCIATION The Minnesota Elementary School Principal s Association has announced Maple Lake Elementary School is one of twelve elementary schools in the state of Minnesota to receive the School of Excellence Endorsement. Maple Lake Elementary was chosen through a rigorous evaluation process. The Minnesota Elementary School Principals Association (MESPA) developed this research-based program aligned with national standards in: leadership, vision, student learning, the culture of adult learning, data and decisionmaking, and community engagement. MESPA endorses schools whose principal, staff, students, and community -- working as a team -- demonstrate the desire to strengthen education by successfully undertaking the Minnesota School of Excellence program. This school improvement process is recognized by the Minnesota Department of Education and the National Association of Elementary School Principals. It involves a systematic program of self-study, development of a school improvement plan, and implementation of the plan based on demonstrated results. - TESTING PROGRAM IN MAPLE LAKE Why test? This ability to see continuous progress of the individual student had been missing from the state testing program. State tests are not aligned from year to

6 year making it difficult to determine the academic growth of the individual students. The NWEA-MAP tests allow students, teachers, and parents the ability to focus on student gains during the year as well as from year to year and compare this data with thousands of students the same age across the nation. The tests are computerized and adjust to the student s achievement level. The majority of the students work to improve their scores each time they take the test. Tests are given in Math and Reading. Teachers use the results to focus on areas of strengths and needs as they prepare lessons and instructional materials. Achievement scores are shared with the parents at conferences and through mailings. Students take the test in the Fall and Spring. A growth target is set for the year with more growth expected in primary grades. The growth targets might range from a 14.2 gain in the score in grade 2 to a 3.0 in grade 8. At the end of the year an average growth for the grade is compared to the average growth target set. That data on each student is reported to parents. 7 EXPLORE AND PLAN TEST-PREDICTOR OF PREPAREDNESS FOR COLLEGE All students in grade 8 take the EXPLORE test and students in grade 10 take the PLAN tests. These tests are similar to the ACT (American College Test) that students take for college entrance purposes. The EXPLORE & PLAN tests predict the extent to which the student is prepared to enter college. Results are individualized, and presented to students and parents. These results should be taken seriously so students can take coursework that enhances their probability of achieving a good ACT score and their preparedness for college. Our eighth and tenth grade students performed better than the national average in all areas. Grade 10 How does our students performance compare with that of 10 th grade students nationwide? Parents should review the results received and note that extra efforts may be needed to prepare their son/daughter for post high school education. IMPROVEMENT PLAN FOR SCHOOL YEAR Continue testing at grades 3-8, 9, 10 & 11 according to state guidelines, as well as the NWEA-MAP testing in grades 2-8 Intensify efforts to improve test scores through targeted services, curriculum improvement, technology integration, and staff development programs as outlined in District goals Effectively use our assessment data to drive our education decisions. Review testing data in PLC groups and determine adjustments needed to curriculum scope and sequence and standards delivery Prepare students for taking MCA tests via practice tests. Continue to identify and monitor exceptional results of individual students and develop appropriate programming as needed Update and revise curriculum to keep pace with changing state standards and MCA test specifications. Implement the college and career readiness standards to boost student success on the ACT. Review test specs for the ACT test and ensure material is covered within curriculum Continue to offer college classes in the high school Continue cooperation and participation with other districts in shared programs such as Area Learning Center, and Technical school offerings. Continue to work on developing positive, supportive, and caring relationships among staff, students, parents, & community through the use of Positive Behavior Intervention Strategies. PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT IN CURRICULUM CONTENT REVIEW The Maple Lake School District believes in the principles of intellectual freedom. Members of the community are welcome to review curriculum and instructional materials. Any parent, guardian, or adult

9 student in District 881 may express concerns about the content of instructional materials in the district's educational program. Whenever a concern is expressed, the district will respond with a procedure of materials review. The intention of the procedure is to provide parents, guardian and adult students with the opportunity to review instructional material, address concerns and propose alternative instruction for the individual student. The intent is not to interfere with the rights of others to receive the instruction in question, nor does it relieve the student from meeting state and district-level essential learner outcomes. Individuals wishing to initiate the procedure of materials review should contact the Superintendent for more information. SENIOR SURVEY The class of 2013 was surveyed prior to graduation. The following info was gathered: Did ML prepare you for your next stage of life? Yes 93% No 7% Teachers generally held high standards and demanded quality work. Excellent/Good 73% Average 21% Students were also asked about the support they received in school, the atmosphere of the school and their peer relationships. All questions relating to relationships with teachers and adults received an % agree or highly agree rating. Examples: At least one adult will listen to me - 95% There is at least one adult who knows me well 91% The staff and teachers care about me - 94% I feel safe in school- 98% Adults in this school are helpful - 89% CURRICULUM REVIEW CYCLE Each year, teachers and administrators examine disciplines that are due for curricular review. The responsibilities during the review are to examine the following components of each discipline area: Goals, Course descriptions, Learner Outcomes, Curricular Materials, and State Standards.
