Short Course for Secondary School Teachers on Teaching the Key Learning Areas of Technology Education, Arts Education and Physical Education in the English medium Art Lam Mannar Ching Chung Hau Po Woon Secondary School

Masks were chosen as the topic because it is more accessible for students beginning to learn in English They are actively engaged in making things and so are likely to be successful and so they will remain motivated The language of instructions is clear and simple, and it is easily accompanied with visuals and animations There isn t too much technical language.

OBJECTIVES OF THE UNIT OF WORK Students will gain an awareness, appreciation and understanding of the uses of masks in many cultures. Students will create a sculptural mask using papier mâché. Lesson /Period Lesson Content Objectives Sequence of Tasks / Activities 1 Appreciation and understanding of the uses of masks in different cultures Design of the mask. Students can choose one of the cultures and design the shape and colour tone of a mask. 1. Appreciating and understanding the uses of masks in different cultures. 2. Designing the shape and colour tone of the mask in the worksheet. 3. Drawing a sketch of the mask. 4. Learning proportions of the face. 2 Learn the steps of creating a paper mask and make a mask. Students will create a sculptural mask using papier mâché. 1. Learning about papier mâché though PPT. 2. Finishing worksheet with PPT. 3. Demonstrating papier mâché. 4. Creating a paper mask. 3-4 Create a mask in different layers of colours and the shape of mask. Decoration of the mask. Students make and colour the mask. Students learn material names, and can add different decorations on the mask and finish it. 1. Making the shape of the mask using cardboard or scissors. 2. Painting with acrylic paints, and with different layers 3. Showing decorations and teaching how to use them. 4. Decorating the masks. 5. Displaying the work in class.

LESSON 2 Outline of Lesson Content Objectives of the lesson Sequence of Tasks / Activities Students will learn the steps for creating a paper mask and making a mask. Students will create a sculptural mask using papier mâché. 1. Learning about papier mâché though PowerPoint. 2. Finishing worksheet with PowerPoint. 3. Demonstrating papier mâché. 4. Creating a paper mask.

LESSON 2 PART 2 MAKE A PAPER MASK

Making a paper mask 1 5 What we will need 1. Newspaper 2. Rice paper 3. Glue 4. Mask Model 5. Scissors / Cutters 6. Acrylic colour 7. Decorations (e.g. feathers, gemstones ) 2 3 4 6 7

The steps for making the mask 1. Tear newspaper and rice paper lengthwise in strips.

2. Blend the glue in a bowl of water so that it looks like milk.

3. Dip one strip of newspaper in the glue water.

4. Write down your class and class number on a piece of masking tape and stick it at back of mask model.

5. Overlap strips of newspaper, smoothing them out with your finger to release trapped air bubbles. 6. Layer the strips so you get 6 layers and work in one direction.

LESSON 3 Outline of Lesson Content Create a mask in different layers of colours and the shape of mask. Decoration of the mask. Objectives of the lesson Students can make the shape and colour the mask. Students learn material names, and can add different decorations on the mask and finish it. Sequence of Tasks / Activities 1. Making the shape of the mask on the cardboard and cutting with scissors. 2. Painting using acrylic colour with different layers 3. Showing decorations and teaching how to use them 4. Decorating the masks. 5. Displaying the works in class.
