FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS What types of vehicles may I donate? We accept cars, trucks, vans, boats on trailers, recreational vehicles (RV s), motorcycles, and heavy equipment. All donated vehicles must have all of their tires. How do you determine the value of my vehicle? Our partner, Charitable Auto Recycling (CAR), auctions the vehicle. Auctions are held on the first Saturday of every month. Whatever the vehicle auctions for is the sale price. If you provided your Social Security number on the Vehicle Donation Form, we will mail you a tax-receipt with the sale price within 30 days of the vehicle sale. How much can I deduct from my taxes for my vehicle donation? Your tax deduction amount is dependent on the sale price of the vehicle. If your vehicle sells for less than $500, you are eligible for a tax deduction of $499. If your vehicle sells for $500 or more, your tax deduction amount is the sale price. Please refer to www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/i8283.pdf for additional information regarding vehicle donation tax deductions. Do I have to provide my Social Security number? If you intend to take a tax deduction for the full sale amount of the vehicle, you must provide your Social Security number in accordance with Public Law 108-357. If you do not wish to claim a tax deduction for the full sale amount, you do not need to provide your Social Security number. If you do not provide your Social Security number, you may not claim more than $499 for the donation of your vehicle. How long will it take to pick up my vehicle? Vehicles are usually picked up within 72 business hours. A Charitable Auto Recycling (CAR) representative will contact you within the first 48 business hours to schedule a convenient pick-up time. If your vehicle donation is in danger of being towed or needs to be moved sooner, please alert the Goodwill employee at the time of your donation. In some cases, same day service may be available, but is not guaranteed. Are there any costs or fees associated with my vehicle donation? Donating your vehicle to Goodwill Central Texas is completely free. However, you may incur costs prior to your donation to properly transfer the title of your vehicle if you do not currently have a clear title on the vehicle. For questions regarding your title or other state documents, please contact the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles at 1.888.368.4689 or visit their website at www.txdmv.gov.
