QUAD JAG EN JAKKALS JAG I was looking around for years to find a nice farm I can get myself -one that is within 3 hours of a major city like Cape Town, one that offers me lots of nice farms all around me, not shot at all, and with me in the centre that is totally virgin, a typical Springbuck area and other buck species, as well as lynx, Jackal and leopards, and after 12 years I eventually got what I was after. Then I decided on getting a couple of quads to play with, and then just like bakkie koop, its all about deals, skelm salesmen and the good and bad ones.
The RUSTLER LINHAI is a widely used quad in SA, is very strong with a good name, and Yamaha owns shares in this manufacturer so you can be assured quality will be good due to the fact that Yamaha is the best quad bike money can buy, Honda is next and then the rest follow. These quads are used in mines and game farms etc, and has a very good record for being good quads, I looked at one with a genuine 3,850 kilometres on its life span, and although it had worked in its life it was still going strong. PREPARATION FOR NIGHT HUNT WITH QUAD If you are sweeping a specific area it is of importance to set a few trail cameras on farm to cover the areas you will call, and after 2-3 days you can look at all the footage and see exactly what you have on film and this will give you an idea as to what s on the farm. Placed 5 cameras in this location, it is a leopard area however I never got footage this time.
Put two cameras here, angled to a busy area. Below from the cameras angle you can see it takes photos perfectly, I set it on 3 a second.
SET UP FOR NIGHT HUNT As per usual I always run a two way calling set up. Two callers, food into the wind and jackal vocal barks downwind, apart each on opposite sides of the road. Food sound 5 seconds on every 1 minute for 5 seconds and barks every 12-15 minutes, territorial sound or subtle vocal bark. Work back into the wind all night to other spots 500m apart. WIND DIRECTION 80m 80m X Food www.africanpredator.com X Jackal Vocal Bark ITEMS PACKED IN FOR NIGHT HUNT; this is a list of things I pack in and then I know I am not forgetting anything at the farm, I am in radio contact with the farm at all times if needed, and I also have cellphones signal if the radio fails to pick up. It is just that radios are free cellphones cost you money. QUAD CHECK LIST 1. Hand red light + M14 LED Lenser 2. Extra leads for red light in case switch breaks 3. 12V car battery 4. TYRE SLIME TO HELP STOP LEAKS No, this is my personal preference, don t put slime in these ATV tyres, rather use a normal 4x4 plug kit, to stop leaks, the SLIME makes on heck of a mess when you must change the tyre and it also can clog up your jet and you wont be able to pump air in the tyre later when you really need to, also many of these tyres are made in 2 ply to 4 ply at best, such a way that the slime wont help anyway. BUT me, personally. I won t use this; rather plug the hole, no mess and quick to do. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-aoac4dbzfs If you still want to put slime in, here is a chart to show you exactly how much you will need in your tyre, and the method of calculation. http://www.slime.com/how-much-slime-do-i-need/
My Skottle braai shooting rest. This is how I light and shoot on the one quad, I scan with a hand held red light, and then when wanting to shoot I switch to this set up; dan na jy die jakkals geskiet het kan jy hom sommer braai ook, skottle is a good idea. I fit a pipe to the quad rack at the back and the skottle underneath fits straight in, then the one side is my light and the other the rifle rest, its very stable and works like a charm. Here is a photo of the original idea. Here it is below all finished with wooden top and extras; Welded a L shape to the left side that the light is fitted to, the wooden top is fixed to the bottom of the skottle and the top is a sort of L shape so you can rest easily when aiming. Very simple to make but its a great idea. I fitted two holders that the gun can lay in while you are waiting at night. They also act as a rest when aiming.
This system is stable and works well, it is easy to clip on the quad when driving and is not in the way, then after you shoot a jackal you can make a skottle and braai him, so it becomes very versatile... The jakkals jag skottle is just the correct height for me to stand and shoot, and it is dead still. WATCH THIS SPACE SOON FOR QUAD HUNTING PHOTOS
LINHAI RUSTLER This day is was freezing cold, but this is to illustrate that two can easily fit on the quad. It has plenty space. This is another idea you can try, rig out a platform on a trailer and put a shooting chair on that, it works very nicely also, then you can tow it leave it at a spot, one guy hunts and you drive on and hunt with quad, then he comes back later to fetch you! ONS MOET DINK MAN!
