PES Scholarship Plus Initiative Receive up to US$7,000 in financial support before graduation: US$2,000 1st year & 2nd year US$3,000 3rd year Assistance in getting up to 2 years of power engineering career experience before graduation One free year of membership in the world s largest and oldest technical association IEEE and its Power and Energy Society Can participate in a mentoring program which connects students to experts
PES Scholarship Plus Initiative Requirements Applicants must be: 1. Citizen or permanent resident of the USA, Canada, Puerto Rico 2. Currently enrolled at an accredited university or community college 3. A full-time undergrad student in the coming academic year 4. Working on (or planning to work on) an accredited electrical engineering undergraduate bachelor s degree 5. Considering a career in power and energy engineering 6. Willing to participate in a career experience (internship, coop, summer research) 7. Attending a university/college that offers undergrad courses in power engineering 8. Planning to take at least three of these power engineering courses (total of nine+ credits) 9. Have a minimum GPA of 3.0 (B) at current college or university
Basic Commitment for a student Willingness to explore power and energy engineering as a career Obtain relevant career experiences Take course work on power and energy engineering subjects Look for opportunities to learn about the industry (such as through industry presentations and mentoring) No penalties if the student decides not to pursue a power and energy engineering career
Selection Criteria Academic performance (Must have at least 3.0 out of 4.0 GPA) Alignment of technical and personal interests with the power engineering field Personal strengths, such as: Volunteer activities Work experience Endorsement letter Strength of academic program (based on the institution s overall power engineering courses and the courses you may take)
Selection Process Eligibility criteria will be reviewed prior to submission by Regional Committees consisting of industry & academic professionals Applicants who do not meet criteria will be denied. Regional Committees make the decision regarding the awarding of the scholarships (new & renewal) The number of scholarships distributed is based on available funding

Recommendation Letter Each applicant for the PES Scholarship Plus Program Scholarship is required to submit a letter of recommendation. Endorsement is typically from someone who thinks the candidate would be a worthy recipient of a scholarship for exploring a career in power and energy engineering. Renewal applicants have the option of including a 2nd letter of recommendation. This letter is typically from somebody who is familiar with their work as part of their internship/career experience.
Recommendation Letter Cont. 3 ways to submit a nomination letter with application Applicant upload the letter (PDF format) Applicant can request that the endorser submit the letter directly to the PES Scholarship Plus Review Committee via nominate section. Have the endorser submit the recommendation via email to pesscholarship-info@ieee.org
Nominate Section Nominate Section The applicant can request that the endorser submit the letter directly to the PES Scholarship Plus Review Committee. From the main menu, select the button "Nominate Section". Applicant will be asked to provide the name and email address of the person who they would like to submit the recommendation. This individual will receive instructions on how to submit the letter and it will be automatically attached to the application.
Your Agreement All applicants are requested to agree to the following statements: I am willing to consider a career in electric power and energy engineering. If I am chosen to receive the scholarship, then I understand that to be eligible to receive it in subsequent years, I will need to continue to meet the eligibility criteria for the scholarship. I understand that a minimum of a B overall grade average across all courses taken is required for scholarship renewal. I will demonstrate academic progress toward an electric power and energy engineering career by taking courses in power and energy engineering at the appropriate time in my academic schedule. I will be expected to obtain career experiences annually, such as through a power and energy engineering internship or cooperative. I will demonstrate an interest in learning about power and energy engineering careers such as by having a mentor, taking field trips, attending informational seminars, participating in undergraduate research opportunities in power and energy engineering, taking short courses on power related topics, participating in an IEEE PES student chapter if one is available, etc. I will submit a renewal application by June 30 next year, provided that I continue to meet the eligibility requirements. I will renew my student membership in the IEEE and the Power & Energy Society after being provided with free membership in the first year of the Scholarship.

Frequently Asked Questions I am in High School and will be attending a college in the fall of 2016 am I eligible for the scholarship? No individuals must be currently enrolled full-time at a university/college or community college. I am not a US or Canadian Citizen or permanent resident of either country am I eligible for the scholarship? Scholarship Plus Initiative is currently only open to students in Canada, United States and Puerto Rico. The PES society is having discussions on expanding the program to other parts of the world.
FAQ s (continued) I attended a community college and transferred to a new school as a junior should I include transcripts from only my current school? Please provide transcripts from all post-secondary schools you have attended. Is the GPA requirement of at least 3.0 (out of 4.0) just the current semester/trimester or cumulative? The GPA requirement is cumulative. Can I edit the application after I hit submit? No - if you have any questions regarding the application, please contact pes-scholarship-info@ieee.org
Renewal FAQs 32 2/10/2016
Renewal Requirements The renewal requirements for obtaining another year of the scholarship are given on the Scholarship Plus web site. An individual who is graduating in December 2016 & beyond is eligible to apply for scholarship renewal. Provided they met renewal requirements
Scholarship Renewal Regional Committees make the decision on Scholarship Renewal. Decision is based on how the applicants describes the career experience in the renewal application (due by June 30). In your description, emphasize the work you are doing, and the skills and knowledge that you are gaining, to electric power and energy engineering.
Scholarship Renewal The Regional Committees cannot give prior approval of a particular career experience. Need to receive your complete renewal application They will be looking at more than just the career experience so the applicant will want to clearly communicate how you have advanced your knowledge of the power and energy engineering career field since you received this year s scholarship.
