release dates: March 22-28 13-1 (03) 2003 The Mini Page Publishing Company Inc. By BETTY DEBNAM Let s Celebrate Women s History Month The Wright brothers flew the first powered, manned and controllable aircraft in the world in 1903. In 1908, Therese Peltier of France became the first woman to fly solo in an aircraft. At first, there were not many airports. Many pilots, a few women among them, were barnstormers who flew in the open country near farms. They would land near barns and offer rides to paying passengers. For a long time, men thought that women did not have the physical ability to fly or make decisions. But between World War I and World War II, women began to fly in many airshows and races. During World War II, women were not allowed to fly in the military. But some did ferry, or fly, aircraft to military bases around the United States. Women demanded equal rights in the 1960s, and more of them began to fly. Today there are many careers available for women in aviation and aerospace. Many women are in cockpits flying for commercial airlines. Women fly military planes. Women are astronauts. Women hold many jobs throughout commercial and general aviation. A few famous female fliers Harriet Quimby (1875-1912) was the first licensed female pilot in the country. She was the first woman to fly across the English Channel. She was also a photographer and reporter. Bessie Coleman (1893-1926) was the first licensed African- American pilot in the U.S., but she had to go to France to earn the license. She came back to the U.S. and took up stunt flying to earn money to open her own flight school. Faye Gillis Wells (1908-2002) was the first woman to become a member of the Caterpillar Club for fliers who had parachuted out of a disabled airplane. She was also one of the first members of the Ninety-Nines Inc., a group of 99 women aviators who encouraged women to become active in aviation. Today, the group has more than 6,500 members worldwide. Amelia Earhart (1897-1937) was the first woman passenger to fly across the Atlantic Ocean. In 1932, she became the first woman to pilot a plane across the Atlantic solo. She also was the first person to fly solo from Hawaii to California. She is our most famous female aviator. Her plane disappeared on July 2, 1937, while she was attempting to be the first to fly around the world. photos courtesy Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum

Standards Spotlight: Mini Page activities meet many state and national educational standards. Each week we identify standards that relate to The Mini Page s content and offer activities that will help your students reach them. This week s standards: Students understand that history relates to events and people of other times and places by identifying examples of interesting Americans. (Social Studies: History) Students use biographies and stories to understand the individuals who are honored by the nation. (Social Studies: History) Activities: 1. Design your own plane. Draw a picture of your plane in the air. Put your favorite female family member or friend in the plane. 2. Use words and pictures from the newspaper to make a Flight collage. 3. Write a pretend letter to one of the women aviators of the past. Include questions you would like to know about the woman s flying career. Then tell the aviator how flying has changed since she flew. 4. Which women in today s Mini Page: (a) tested the science and technology of flying, (b) flew to entertain people, (c) flew in military situations and (d) flew in space? 5. Use reference books and the Internet to learn more about one of the women fliers in today s Mini Page. Use these questions to guide your research: When did the woman live? Where did she grow up? How did she first become interested in flying? What obstacles did she face? How many years did she fly? What contributions did she make to the field of aviation? (standards by Dr. Sherrye D.
