Connect It s easy to add all your devices Laptops, smartphones, tablets and TVs ultrafast broadband helps you get more out of so many devices. Here s how to connect them. 6
Making a wired connection It s always best to link high demand devices like smart TVs and computers with a wired connection. There are four Ethernet ports at the bottom the router simply plug your device in and away you go. It s also worth making sure the cable you are using supports Gigabit speeds (so look for cables with Cat5e or Cat6 printed on them). Making a wireless connection First of all you ll need your SSID and WiFi key (also known as WPA-2 key) they ll be in your installation box and on the router itself. Depending on the device you re using (smartphones, tablets, laptops etc) you ll generally need to find your device s settings or options. There should be a WiFi section that will search for local networks once it s found yours, select it and enter the password. For computers and laptops you ll need to head into Settings (for Mac OS users) or to the Control Panel (for Windows users). Follow the instructions from there. Every device is different, so follow the manufacturers guide wherever possible. For more information on connecting specific devices visit Portal.Gigaclear.com You will need your customer number to login. The portal also lets you review your account, see which devices are connected, and puts you in touch with our customer service team if you have any questions. Or call us on 01865 591131 Connect 7
Changing your wireless password Swapping your password to something more memorable is simple. Just head over to gigaclear.com/documentation and follow the instructions in the home router user guide. You ll need your SSID and existing password to access this feature. Other things to consider Email: email accounts from providers like Gmail, Outlook or Yahoo can still be accessed as normal. Other providers like Sky, BT and AOL might charge you for continuing with them, so always check with your provider to find out more. Telephone: ultrafast broadband gives you the option of switching your phone line to a broadband telephone provider. We recommend one of the world s largest suppliers, Vonage (www.vonage.co.uk) who will set you up for just 8 a month. You won t have to pay the usual 17.99 line rental plus call features and you can use your existing number/hardware. And it only takes four simple steps: Step One: Connect your Vonage Box to your existing broadband Step Two: Plug your phone into your Vonage Box Step Three: Pick up your phone and call somebody Step Four: When you are ready to transfer your existing number call Vonage on 0808 178 9620 and ask them to start the process. Or visit Vonage.co.uk/Gigaclear Alarm: if your home is usually connected to an alarm monitoring centre (and you re changing your phone system) you ll need to check with your provider. They ll make sure that your alarm is still compatible with your new broadband phone. Other services: If you already use things like anti-virus, hosting, file sharing and backup through your current ISP (Internet service provider), you should be able to continue using them. Get in touch with your current ISP to check or switch to one of the free, alternative providers that are available. 8 Connect
Help Ultra-handy advice for Gigaclear users Looking for tips on how to set up your ultrafast network? Help is at hand. 9
Knowing your router It all starts with the router. So if you re experiencing any problems, it s often best to start troubleshooting there. Check which lights are on/off and then you should be able to fix the problem yourself or else contact us for more information. What do my router lights mean? Power Optical Link The router is receiving light from the fibre and your fibre connections are in good shape. Data Link The router has a data connection to the street cabinet, you should now be able to connect your equipment and proceed to activating or using the service. If this remains unlit, check that the router is clipped onto the midplate properly. Internet Access The router is connected to the Internet (if this is flashing on or off you may not have activated your service yet see next page). If this is on, and you cannot access the Internet, then it is usually an issue in the home, such as wiring or wireless, try connecting your PC directly to the Ethernet/LAN port on the bottom of the router. For additional information refer to your Genexsis User Guide. Additional buttons on router Re-set This button resets the router. Only use when the connection is unusually slow or you re unable to fully connect, after you have spoken to our customer care team. WPS Enables WiFi devices to connect to the router without having to enter a password (Hold button down for 2 seconds.) 10
Boosting your wireless connection If your home has lots of thick, stone walls or it s particularly large, you might need to boost your wireless signal. This is completely normal and there are a number of solutions available. We recommend the following: WiFi range extenders: these boost the WiFi signal from your router and can be a convenient way to improve the signal (without having to plug extra devices in). Ultrafast WiFi coverage 5 10 60 150 Router Ultrafast WiFi coverage with an extender 50 WiFi Extender 60 80 150 Uploads/Downloads Max Router Powerline adaptors: these are inexpensive devices that plug into your mains electricity to boost the signal in different areas of your home. WiFi Access points: these work by connecting wireless devices together to create a wireless network. Many of our customers have found this the best solution to boost their WiFi signal. Avoid sharing the same channel as your neighbours Your router uses a radio signal when connecting wirelessly. To avoid congestion, you need to make sure you re on a different channel to your neighbours. There are plenty of apps that will assess the local WiFi environment for you. Once you ve done this, pick the least congested channel for your router to work on. If you need any assistance, call us on 01865 591131 Want to test your speed?
