Notes of Clarification - There have been 22 years when no third-place game was played. Boys soccer was first contested in the winter (February and March ) from 1968-69 to 1974-75. However, to avoid duplication, those teams that qualified for the MSHSAA playoffs during those years have listings reflecting the fall year. For example, a team the made the (winter) 1974-75 playoffs is listed as 1974 on the following pages (fall) to avoid duplication with the 1975 fall playoff participants. There were just two Districts from the initial playoff year of 1968-69 until 1970-71 and thus no third-place teams were named. The playoffs expanded to four Districts in 1972, eight Districts in 1978 and 16 Districts in 1981. Soccer was first split into two classes (1A-3A and 4A) in 1985 with eight Districts per class, and then Class 4A expanded to 16 Districts the following year. Class 1A-3A expanded to 16 Districts for the 1998 playoffs. The 2002 playoffs were the first year of three classifications with Class 1 and Class 2 consisting of eight districts, and Class 3 consisting of 16. 2 2012 MSHSAA Boys Soccer Championships
