Car wheel alignment What is wheel alignment? Wheel alignment is complete geometry of the chassis; so the wheels are perpendicular to the ground and parallel to each according to car manufacturers original specification. Purposes for good wheel alignment: to obtain a specific handling (safety matter) to reduce tire wear to ensure that vehicle travel is straight and true (without "pulling" to one side) 2
Key wheel alignment angles Toe / total toe The angle between midplane of tire and symmetry axis (rear wheels) / geometric axis (front wheels). With the adjustment of toe the tire gets more grip to the road, thus the vehicle gets a stable and parallel straightforward drive. Without positive or negative toe, the tires are either falling to the inside or outside. The vehicle is not constantly driving straight on, the steering starts to shimmy. Also the tires would etch on the road and wear off much faster as normal. Camber The angle of the wheel when viewed from the front of the vehicle. camber effects a stable chassis driving straight on without the steering to shake. Caster The angle of the wheel when viewed from the side of the vehicle. A positive caster anticipates the shimmy of the steering and provides at the same time (together with king pin) that the steering wheel is getting back into straight position. 3
Wheel alignment measurement If the wheel alignment so important how do customers, workshop operators make sure their cars (client cars) have correct wheel alignment setup accordingly to car manufacturers original specification? 8 Sensor wheel alignment With the 4 measuring heads the WA 970 is generating a closed rectangle around the car and measures all relevant values All relevant angels are physically measured by the CCD cameras and the internal inclinometer Contrary to a 6 sensor wheel aligner and 3D wheel aligners also the toe on the rear axle is physically measured and not calculated by the software 7
4 point wheel clamps The 4 point wheel clamps that are included in the scope of delivery guarantee that the rim run out compensation is done easily by pushing the car All operations during the rim run out compensation are controlled from one measuring sensor only With the 3 point clamp that is still delivered on some competitors machines the rolling compensation is not possible As the wheels need to be lifted for run out compensation when 3 point clamps are used also a wheel free lift is required 8
Databank The databank is a summary of data provided from Autodata as well as from various car manufacturers The databank contains the nominal values of over 20.000 vehicles The data are categorized in various areas of the world to ensure that the operator in the shop does find the relevant data in the quickest possible way In addition to the main databank provided the user can generate its own databank 9
Chassis data With 8-sensor-technology you can gain information about the chassis situation of the vehicle. These dates are giving a quick information if a car is bended or not. After sales: Calibration Zero point calibration: can theoretically be done before every measurement. Heads have to be placed fully aligned and customer tells the machine 0 point position. Head cross check: To check if complete calibration has to be made, this test can be effected by the customer. Purpose is to exchange wheel sensor heads located at both sides and to compare the results. One specific menu is included in the software to guide user through the process. Complete scale calibration is to be processed in average every six months. Heads have to be placed on a calibration rack and specific mirrors have to be placed on the heads. Guided through software, the user can then complete full scale calibration. Usually the distributor is in charge of full scale calibration. 24

General after sales information The after sales is still part of the sales; for this reason it is important to rely on good support from the supplier. For this matter we have special service coordinates that have to be contacted in any issue: service@nussbaum-lifts.de +49 (0) 1805 288 911 In case of malfunction with one or several sensor heads, reaction has to be quick so that customer can work. Hence the possibility for the customer to get directly a complete set of four sensor heads in case of disturbance. The complete defect set of heads shall then be sent back and be analyzed to decide if it is a case of guarantee and if credit note can be issued for previously sent new sensor heads. 26

Comparison to 3D wheel aligners Advantage of 3D wheel aligner No electronics on the wheel Advantages of WA 920 / WA 970 (CCD wheel aligner) Less space requirement The 3D wheel aligner does require app. 1 m 1,5 m space between the cameras and the center of the turntables Use in every height of the lift If the 3D wheel aligner does not have the capability to move the cameras up and down the operator can only work in one specific height of the lift. Most of the times this means the rim run out compensation as well as the steering operation needs to be performed on a stair when the lift is up to do the adjustment More accurate measurement Just like on 6 sensor CCD wheel aligners the 3D wheel aligner does the calculation of the toe via software.
