Dr. Daphne Henderson Assistant Professor Dr. Daphne Henderson, assistant professor of social work, is a licensed master social worker and has truly practiced what she teaches. After earning her Bachelor of Social Work at Texas A&M University-Commerce and her master s and doctoral degrees at the University of Texas in Arlington, Henderson taught at several community colleges and universities before joining the UT Martin faculty in 2010. Before beginning her teaching career, she worked in mental health, medical and child-welfare settings. Speaking of her child-welfare career, Henderson said, I had the opportunity to work with children who had been removed from the care of their biological family. Being forced to leave the familiarity of home, even an abusive home, can be scary and traumatic, she said. One of my responsibilities was to ensure that each child received the best possible care, which included encouragement, support and being a constant presence. Henderson said social work is important because of its very nature, which is to help improve the quality of life for anyone needing assistance. That assistance can help address family problems, medical issues, inadequate housing, unemployment or substance abuse. Social workers can advocate for new and improved service, as well as policy planning and development. Social work is a constantly evolving profession, she said. My social work content is updated each semester to include current, relevant information that provides students with real-life scenarios. 5 utm.edu/cehbs 731-881-7125 utm.edu/cehbs 731-881-7125 6
