Seeing Jesus Throughout the Bible READING PLAN

Genesis 3:1-24 See Jesus As: God s Promise of Salvation In Genesis 3:15, we see the first foreshadow of God s promise to send Jesus to defeat death and Satan for us. 1

Exodus 12:1-30 See Jesus As: The Passover Sacrifice In Exodus 12:27, we see a foreshadow of the sacrifice that Jesus will make to enable God to passover our sins. 2

Leviticus 16 See Jesus As: Leviticus 16 The Necessary Atoning In Leviticus 16, we are introduced to the Day of Atonement. Atone means to cover or satisfy. This is a foreshadowing that Jesus would atone for our rebellion and sins on the cross to reconcile us back to God. Be sure to notice all the specifics. 3

Numbers 21:4-9 See Jesus As: The Bronze Serpent In Numbers 21:8, we see a symbol of death (serpent) turned into a source of life. This is a foreshadowing of the cross (symbol of death) that God would turn into our source of life. 4

Deuteronomy 18:14-22 See Jesus As: The Ultimate Prophet In Deuteronomy 18:15, God promises to raise up a Prophet like Moses. This is a foreshadowing of what was to come in Jesus who was the ultimate prophet. 5

Joshua 10 See Jesus As: The Great Conqueror The name Joshua is translated Jesus in Greek. In Joshua 10, we get a glimpse of Joshua s ability to conquer all enemies on the way to bring His people to a place of great rest. This is a foreshadowing of Christ and what He accomplished on the cross. 6

Judges 2:6-23 See Jesus As: The Great Judge In Judges 2, we see the Lord raising up Judges to deliver His people out from under their sin. This is a foreshadowing of what Christ will do once and for all. 7

Ruth 2:1-23;4:1-12 See Jesus As: The Kinsman Redeemer In Ruth, we read an incredible story about a kinsman-redeemer named Boaz paying the price to bring a foreign woman named Ruth into the people of God. Boaz is a foreshadowing of Jesus and what He will accomplish on the cross to redeem us. 8

2 Samuel 7:1-17 See Jesus As: The Great Offspring of David In 2 Samuel 7:12, God promises an offspring of David to establish an eternal Kingdom. Later, we see that Jesus was a descendent of the David and the offspring that He was referring to in this text. 9

1 Kings 4:29-34 See Jesus As: The Wise King In 1 Kings 4, God grants Solomon great wisdom as a king to lead the Israelites. This was a foreshadowing of the wisest King the world has ever known in Jesus. 10

1 Chronicles 17:1-15 See Jesus As: The Eternal King In 1 Chronicles, we see a promised King that will be established on the throne forever. This is a foreshadowing of Jesus who will later come from the lineage of David. 11

Ezra 4:1-5 See Jesus As: The Faithful Scribe In Ezra 4, we see Zerubbabel as the rebuilder of the temple. The significance of the temple was that it housed the presence of God. Jesus would later become the temple and then die and rise from the dead so that all believers could become a temple of His Holy Spirit. 13

Nehemiah 3 See Jesus As: The Rebuilder of the Walls In Nehemiah 3, we see walls of salvation being rebuilt by Nehemiah. This is a foreshadowing of the walls of salvation that Jesus will one day provide for those who put their faith in Him. 14

Esther 8:1-6 See Jesus As: The Perfect Intercessor In Esther 8, we get a great picture of the heart of Christ through Esther. She sympathizes with her people. This is a foreshadowing of Jesus. 15

Job 42 See Jesus As: The Suffering Servant In the book of Job, we get a foreshadowing of the perseverance of Jesus. Jesus would later come and endure great suffering for our sake so that we could be reconciled back to God. 16

Psalm 22 See Jesus As: The Crucified Savior Hundreds of years before Jesus died on the cross, Psalm 22 foreshadows how this will take place down to the minutest detail. This is a foreshadowing of Jesus and what He will come and do for us. 17

Proverbs 21 See Jesus As: The Wisdom of God In the book of Proverbs, Solomon shows us how to put the wisdom of God into practice in our lives. This would later be displayed perfectly in the person of Jesus. 18

Ecclesiastes 3:11 See Jesus As: The Eternity Our Heart Longs For In Ecclesiastes 3:11, Solomon wisely tells us that God has placed eternity into our hearts. This makes it clear why a relationship with Jesus is the only thing that can fulfill that longing in our hearts and shows us why God would have to send Jesus to the cross to make a way for us to be reconciled to a relationship with God. 19

Song of Solomon 2:16 See Jesus As: The Lover & Bridegroom In the book of Song of Solomon, we get an incredible love story between a bridegroom and a bride. Not only is this a picture of marriage, it is a picture of God s love for us. The Bible later tells us that the Church is the Bride of Christ. 20

Isaiah 53 See Jesus As: The Suffering Savior In Isaiah 53, we get a foreshadowing of what would happen to Jesus on the cross. 21

Jeremiah 23 See Jesus As: The Righteous Branch In Jeremiah 23, we see a foreshadowing of Jesus as the righteous branch from the lineage of David. 22

Lamentations 3:1 See Jesus As: The Willing Savior In Lamentations 3:1, we get an interesting foreshadow of Jesus. On the cross, Jesus became sin on our behalf and willingly took on the wrath of God for you and I. 23

Ezekiel 36:25-27 See Jesus As: The Coming Savior In Ezekiel 36, we are told about a person that will come and give us new hearts and put His Spirit within us. This is a foreshadowing of Jesus and what He came to do. 24

Daniel 7:13-14 See Jesus As: The Son of Man coming in the clouds of Heaven In Daniel 7:13-14, we get a picture of the Son of Man coming with the clouds of heaven. This is a foreshadowing of Jesus when He comes back in the book of Revelation. 25

Hosea 3 See Jesus As: The Bridegroom In Hosea, we read an incredible story of a bridegroom s faithfulness to his adulterous wife. This is a picture of Jesus pursuit of us even through our rebellion and adultery with idols. 26

Joel 2:32 See Jesus As: The Baptizer With The Holy Spirit In Joel 2:32, we get an awesome promise of deliverance that will come through Jesus when the Day of the Lord occurs. 27

Amos See Jesus As: The Burden Bearer In Amos 8:9, we see a prophecy of what will happen upon the death of Jesus. God would darken the day at noon. In Matthew 27:45, we see this come to pass. 28

Obadiah 1:21 See Jesus As: The Mighty Savior The book of Obadiah ends with the promise of fulfillment and deliverance of God s people in the Last Days when the land will be restored to God s people as He rules over them. This is God s promise for His church through Christ. 29

Jonah 1:12 See Jesus As: The Calmer of Storms In Jonah 1:12, we see a huge similarity between Jonah and Jesus. Jonah tells them to throw him overboard and the storm will be calm. It is only salvation which came through the death of Jesus that we find peace in the midst of storms. 30

Micah 5:2 See Jesus As: The Promise of Bethlehem In Micah 5:2, we read a prophecy about Christ. It says that a ruler from the beginning of time will come out of Bethlehem and rule over Israel. Thousands of years later, Jesus is born in Bethlehem. 31

Nahum 1:7 See Jesus As: The Refuge In Times of Trouble In Nahum 1:7, we get a foreshadowing of Christ. The message of Jesus has always been the same. He is a refuge for His people in times of trouble because He cares for us. 31

Habakkuk 1:12 See Jesus As: The Everlasting In Habakkuk 1:12, we see an incredible promise about Jesus. He is everlasting and will never die. That is a great hope for those that rest their hope in Him. 32

Zephaniah 3:17 See Jesus As: The Mighty Warrior In Zephaniah 3:17, we get an incredible picture of who Jesus is. 33

Haggai 2:9 See Jesus As: The Greater Temple In Haggai 2:9, we see a promise that the glory of the present house will be greater than the former house. These houses refer to the Temple of God. Ultimately, Jesus is the greater Temple of God. 34

Zechariah 13:9 See Jesus As: The Ultimate Salvation In Zechariah 13:9, we see an incredible promise. It says that those who call on God will be answered and He will be their God. This is a foreshadowing of what we are offered in Jesus. In Christ, we become children of God. 35

Malachi 3:1 See Jesus As: The Messenger of the Covenant In Malachi 3:1, we get an incredible promise. The long awaited Savior will appear. He is referred to as the messenger of the new covenant in which we read in Jeremiah 31 and Ezekiel 36. 36

Matthew 11:28-30 See Jesus As: Rest For Our Soul In Matthew 11, we hear from Jesus himself about his offer of rest for our souls. 37

Mark 10:45 See Jesus As: The Servant In Mark 10:45, Jesus tells us about what He came to earth to do. 38

Luke 4:16-22 See Jesus As: The Son of Man In Luke 4, Jesus begins His ministry by fulfilling the prophecy of Isaiah 61:1-2. He announces who He is and the reason for His coming. 39

John 14:6 See Jesus As: The Way, The Truth, and The Life In John 14:6, Jesus announces who He is. 40

Acts 4:12 See Jesus As: Salvation In Acts 4:12, Peter tells us that Jesus is the only place that salvation can be found. 41

Romans 3:21-26 See Jesus As: The Righteousness of God In Romans 3, Paul tells us that Jesus is the righteousness of God revealed. 42

1 Corinthians 1:8 See Jesus As: Our Sustainer and Keeper In 1 Corinthians 1:8, Paul tells us that Christ will sustain and keep us until the end. 43

2 Corinthians 5:18 See Jesus As: Our Reconciliation In 2 Corinthians 5, Paul explains to us that Jesus is our reconciliation to God. 44

Galatians 3:14 See Jesus As: Our Redeemer In Galatians 3:14, Paul tells us that Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the Law. 45

Ephesians 1:3-14 See Jesus As: The Giver of Spiritual Blessings In Ephesians 1, Paul explains Jesus as the giver of many blessings to His Children. 46

Philippians 2:5-11 See Jesus As: The Exalted One In Philippians 2, Paul tells us that Jesus has been exalted to the highest place and He is the name above every name. 47

Colossians 1:15 See Jesus As: The Image of the Invisible God In Colossians 1:15, Paul tells us that Jesus is the image of God. 48

1 Thessalonians 1:10 See Jesus As: Our Rescuer from the Coming Wrath In 1 Thessalonians 1:10, Paul tells us that Jesus is our rescuer from the coming wrath. 49

2 Thessalonians 3:16 See Jesus As: Lord of Peace In 2 Thessalonians 3:16, Paul tells us that Jesus is the Lord of peace. 50

1 Timothy 2:5 See Jesus As: The Mediator Between God And Man In 1 Timothy 2:5, Paul acknowledges Jesus as the one Mediator between God and man. 51

2 Timothy 4:1 See Jesus As: The Judge of the Living and Dead In 2 Timothy 4:1, Paul tells us that Jesus will judge the living and the dead. 52

Titus 2:13 See Jesus As: The Blessed Hope In Titus 2:13, Paul refers to Jesus as our Blessed Hope. 53

Philemon 1:3 See Jesus As: The Giver of Grace and Peace In Philemon 1:3, Paul asks Jesus to give grace and peace to Philemon. 54

Hebrews 2:17 See Jesus As: The Faithful High Priest In Hebrews 2:17, Jesus is referred to as the Faithful High Priest. 55
