1 UNITED METHODIST BOOK OF WORSHIP SCRIPTURE READINGS LISTED ACCORDING TO THE BOOKS OF THE BIBLE Compiled by The Center for Worship Resourcing, General Board of Discipleship THE UNITED METHODIST BOOK OF WORSHIP (UMBOW) includes a lectionary based on the Revised Common Lectionary (RCL) of the Consultation on Common Texts (CCT) 1. (See page in the UMBOW.) While the Revised Common Lectionary used by United Methodists is substantially the same as the CCT version, it reflects selections made "on the basis of United Methodist needs and traditions" (UMBOW 227). The following list was developed in response to requests for a list of the RCL texts in order of the books of the Bible. It will assist pastors and other worship planners and leaders in several ways. One use is to enable preachers and planners who wish to develop filing systems--computer or manual--for sermon illustrations, hymn selections or other liturgical resources related to the UMBOW lectionary texts. It also serves as a tool for knowing the frequency with which a given text occurs in the lectionary, and which books are used or not used in the United Methodist Revised Common Lectionary. The following list gives the reading, the Sunday or other special day for which it is designated, the letter of the three-year cycle (A, B, C or some combination of the three). When an * appears before a text, it indicates that its use is variable depending on the need. The number of Sundays after Epiphany and the number of Sundays after Pentecost vary depending on the date of Easter that year. The Sundays after Epiphany may be as few as three and as many as eight prior to The Transfiguration Sunday (Last Sunday after the Epiphany). The Sundays after Pentecost begin with Trinity Sunday which may occur as early as May 29 and as late as June 25. Preachers and planners will need to plan accordingly using the "Calendar for Dating Easter and Related Holy Days" found on page 225 of the Book of Worship, or check the Lectionary for the specific year on the website. The following additional symbols and abbreviations are used in the list that follows: + indicates that some but not all of the Psalm identified is in the UMH Psalter. If a Psalm does not have a UMH reference after it, it means that it is not in the UNITED METHODIST HYMNAL Psalter. When the Psalm listed is not in the UMH Psalter, the UMBOW lectionary ( ) will always give an alternative Psalm text that is included in the UMH Psalter. S indicates a special day on the calendar in addition to those listed in the Revised Common Lectionary in UMBOW. These are days shared by many traditions and may be observed by United Methodist congregations. Though the UMBOW does not give dates for all of these, the day of traditional observance is noted wherever such special days are listed. (resp) indicates the text listed is used as a response to the first reading on the day designated. In some cases, a text other than a Psalm is designated as a response to the first lesson. In all cases, the Psalm is used as a response to the first reading, so resp is not indicated with the Psalm listings. (palm) indicates that the text is used in the entrance portion of the Passion/Palm Sunday service. See UMBOW Date specific listings of readings for the Christian Year are available on the GBOD worship website 1 Those who desire the full listing of the RCL as published by the Consultation on Common Texts will find it in The Revised Common Lectionary: The Consultation on Common Texts. (Nashville: Abingdon Press, 1992), Index II, pp. 112f.
