4 Acknowledgements This project would not likely have been completed without the contributions of others. I would like to thank my grandmother, Jennie Flowers, and my mother Mary Dann, for playing the roles of Lois and Eunice (2 Tim. 1:5) in cultivating within me a love for the story of the Bible. I would like to thank my father, Carl Dann, Sr., for showing me how to walk in integrity of heart and uprightness (1 Kings 9:4). I would like to thank Chuck Bartlett and the members of the West End church of Christ in Toronto, Canada for turning me on to the importance of teaching a survey of the books of the Bible. I would like to thank those members of the Northeast church of Christ in Clearwater, Florida whose enthusiasm for this study made it labor of love. I would also like to thank Jesse A. Flowers and Marc W. Gibson, who frequently helped in the completion of this task by listening and offering suggestions, and my brothers, Carl Dann, Jr. and James Dann for their encouragement throughout the process. And finally, I would like to thank Mike Willis, whose instruction and encouragement in writing made it possible for such a task to be undertaken. Dedication To my loving wife, Cynthia, whose encouraging and understanding ways enabled me to complete this project: Many daughters have done well, but you excel them all (Prov. 31:29). And to Olivia, Zebulon, Minnie, and Boaz who are in the process of learning the stories of the Bible: Behold, children are a heritage from the LORD (Psa. 127:3a). 4 Overview of the Bible

5 Lesson 1 Introduction to the Bible Introduction The term Bible is derived from the Greek word biblos, which is defined as a written book, a roll, a scroll. 1 But the Bible is not just any book; it is the book. It is the only book that can provide answers to the greatest questions man may ask concerning his own origin, purpose, and destiny. The Bible claims to be a product of the mind of Almighty God. This claim is clearly seen throughout the Bible. The apostle Paul states that, All Scripture is given by inspiration of God (2 Tim. 3:16). The phrase, Thus says the Lord is found over 400 times throughout the Old Testament. Jesus referred to the Old Testament Scriptures as that which God commanded (Matt. 15:4-6). The Holy Spirit is given credit for what is written in the Old Testament (Heb. 3:7-11). The Scriptures are referred to as the oracles of God (Rom. 3:1-2; Heb. 5:12; 1 Pet. 4:11). Peter states that the Bible was written by men who were moved by the Holy Spirit (2 Pet. 1:20-21). It becomes obvious that the central claim of the Bible with regard to its origin is that the words it contains are the words God intended it to contain. What is in the Bible? The Bible Is God s Library 1. The Bible is actually a collection of books. It is composed of sixty-six separate books. These sixty-six books were written by at least forty different writers. Furthermore, these forty different writers lived during different periods of time over the course of about 1500 years. 2. The Bible presents one unified story. Though the Bible is a collection of sixty-six books written by forty different men over a period of 1500 years, it contains one main story. The story of the Bible is the story of God s plan to save mankind from sin. 3. The Bible is composed of two main divisions. (a) The Old Testament includes the first thirty-nine books of the Bible. A testament or covenant is a contract or agreement between two parties. The Old Testament is the record of a covenant God established with the nation of Israel, the descendants of Abraham (Deut. 5:1-2). All thirty-nine books of the Old Testament were written before Jesus birth. (b) The New Testament includes the last twenty-seven books of the Bible. The New Testament is the record of a covenant God established for all nations (Matt. 28:18-20). All twenty-seven books of the New Testament were written after Jesus birth. 1 Joseph H. Thayer, Thayer s Greek-English Lexicon of the New Testament, the central claim of the Bible with regard to its origin is that the words it contains are the words God intended it to contain. The first thirty-nine books of the Bible comprise the Old Testament. The Old Testament includes the books ranging from Genesis through Malachi. The books of the Old Testament were written between the years B.C. 2. The books of the Old Testament fall into five major categories. (a) The books of the Law include the books of Genesis through Deuteronomy. (b) The books of History include the books of Joshua through Esther. (c) The books of Poetry include the books of Job through Song of Solomon. (d) The books of the Major Prophets include the books of Isaiah through Daniel. (e) The books of the Minor Prophets include the books of Hosea through Malachi. The Bible Includes The New Testament 1. The last twenty-seven books of the Bible comprise the New Testament. The New Testament includes the books ranging from Matthew through Revelation. The New Testament books were written during the last half of the first century A.D. 2. The books of the New Testament fall into five major categories. (a) The Gospels, covering the life of Christ, include the books of Matthew through John. (b) One book of History, the book of Acts, is included in the New Testament. (c) The apostle Paul s Epistles (or letters) written to churches or individuals include the books of Romans through Philemon. (d) The General Letters written by various individuals include the books of Hebrews through Jude. (e) One book of Prophecy, the book of Revelation, is included in the New Testament. The Bible Contains One Theme 1. The theme of the Bible is Jesus Christ. Since the Bible presents one unified story of God s provision for the salvation of mankind from sin, the Savior is central to the entire story. Both testaments are centered on Jesus Christ (Luke 24:44). The Old Testament focuses on Christ in anticipation of His coming into the world to provide the way of salvation. The New Testament focuses on Christ as the One who has come and has provided the way of salvation. The salvation prepared with a view toward Christ in the Old Testament is brought to completion in Christ in the New Testament. 2. Jesus Christ completes the Bible. The plan of God, which began to be revealed in the Old Testament, is brought to completion by Christ in the New Testament (Matt. 5:17). The prophecies of the coming of Christ recorded in the Old Testament are fulfilled in the life of Christ presented in the New Testament (Mic. 5:2; Matt. 2:1). 2 The full 2 Josh McDowell presents the following with regard to Old Testament prophecies of Christ: Floyd Hamilton, in The Basis of Christian Faith (a modern defense of the Christian religion), writes: Canon Liddon is authority for the statement that 6 Overview of the Bible

7 and complete forgiveness of sins foreshadowed in the Old Testament is fulfilled through Christ in the New Testament (Heb. 10:1, 12-14). The Law of Moses, with its rituals and ceremonies that pointed toward Christ in the Old Testament, is done away with in the reality of Christ in the New Testament (Col. 2:14-17). The message of God, which was presented in a variety of ways and on a variety of occasions in the Old Testament, is presented in its fullness through Christ in the New Testament (Heb. 1:1-4). The promises of salvation presented in the Old Testament are made a reality through the presence of Christ in the New Testament (Matt. 1:21). Conclusion The Bible is uniquely situated above any other writings ever produced. It alone contains the answers to man s most important questions. Truly, The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God stands forever (Isa. 40:8). there are in the Old Testament 332 distinct predictions which were literally fulfilled in Christ (Hamilton, BCF, 160). Payne lists 191 in his Encyclopedia of Biblical Prophecy (Payne, EBP, ). McDowell s own Summary of Old Testament Predictions Literally Fulfilled in Christ includes close to 200 prophetic references from the Old Testament (The New Evidence That Demands A Verdict, ). The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God stands forever (Isa. 40:8). Overview of the Bible 7
